OLD NOTES FOR PLANNING (TO REVISIT AFTER THE EVENT)

Student participation - Point system (Neeru), entry barriers higher as commitment vehicle, strengthen community (personal profiles, group work in small groups), rewards for course completion (certificate, possibility to purchase limited edition t-shirt, etc.)

Course design - How long should the courses be?  How many deadlines are realistic? How to create a community of practice that remains after the course (courses enable entry into CoP)? How to be flexible - maybe agree on schedule as a group at the start (if you get to decide on the schedule, you will also stick to it).

Technology - MediaWiki, WPMU, Drupal, Live video integration (Supercoolschool or edufire)?

Vision / Mission - Big picture stuff.  Why are we doing this? What change will we have brought about if everything goes absolutely brilliantly? UPDATE: Gunner recommended doing the vision/mission discussion in a way that is more focused on the meeting. From his experience, discussions about vision/mission can make progress harder than necessary - mentioned Lessig quote from Rio meeting.

Choice of license for p2pu.org site  - The site is currently using a CC BY license for all materials stored on it. However, some members of the community feel that CC BY SA better reflects their philosophy, and aligns with their goals for participation in P2PU. We are considering to reach out to some friends and experts for advice, and aggregate their recommendations in preparation for the discussion.

Iterations of courses - Stian: "to what extent is it better for a class to start from scratch to explore the questions for themselves, we don't want to give students the feeling some people have when they go to English wikipedia these days: THe work is basically done, articles worth writing are written, etc... So it's a fine balance. On the other hand, I would love if the work in the courses also contributed to the stock of open materials in the world - wheher on p2pu itself, or other sites, like Wikipedia (let's cowrite a featured article about copyright in one country), or Acawiki etc etc..."

Business model for P2PU / Sustainability - Even with very little staff and overheads P2PU generates expenses. If we added the opportunity costs of the volunteers, these costs would be more significant. What are the opportunities to generate income for P2PU in order to sustain it (e.g. grants, donations from participants, donations from others, selling T-Shirts, referral fees from accreditation providers, etc.)? What is the impact of relying on certain sources of funds for the project?

Growing the community - How do we grow the community? What types of responsibilities are organisers willing to take on going forward? How do we ensure that the core of the projects remains intact even as it grows?

Values -We believe in openness, community, learning and quality. Those four core values need to be extended, and explained in concrete terms. The values of P2PU will guide us as P2PU grows and adapts.

Trouble(d) participants - How do we deal with participants that are not constructive, and possibly destrictuve in their behavior and communication with course organisers and other participants?

Orga / Admin - How many people and who should be on the board?

Some ideas around strategy planning (from wikipedia strategy):

  • Anchor on the vision: Wikimedia has a powerful vision ("a world in which every single human being can freely share in the sum of all human knowledge") that serves as a touchstone for the strategy process
  • Do it the Wiki way: Open, transparent and evolving deliberations that trust in the constructive spirit of diverse volunteers to bring powerful expertise and perspective
  • Use the best of nonprofit strategy know-how: Drive dialogue and decisions from facts and rigorous analysis of options; Focus on the most critical decisions that will drive large scale impact; tackle questions that require "values" choices explicitly
  • Presume good faith: People are engaging with Wikimedia in the best spirit of volunteerism and contribution to social good and will act with the best motives
  • Learn and change: Try stuff, If it doesn't work stop, and try something else
