September 15th Discussion Ideas

Go back to: General discussion

So first off, the agenda for today would be to look over (or create?) a "social contract" so we're all operating under the same general rubric of how to interact in the most optimal way... I have some information on this, but mostly it's under the idea of how to share information with others in a way that is most helpful

Second, I would love it if we can introduce ourselves, and since I haven't set up Skype properly (I had to take my mom to the hospital yesterday and it has thrown off my schedule rather a lot) let us see if we can to that in text format

Then, I'll share my ideas or feedback based on what you have written, and y'all can respond as you see fit.

I'm also much more fluent with group conference calling and that is another medium I'd like to propose we try at some near point.

Would like to know your preferred modes for learning in this class.

Proposed length of time today: one hour. I am going to check out the "etherpad" option, next, once we see who can show up for this session... I apologize about the awkwardness of my internet skills.

I prefer written chat/forums for learning; over voice-based communications.

And as for me?

Well, I'm a geeky (Roleplaying, LARPing, Boardgaming, Bibliophile!) girl, who plays Roller Derby, with a bit of an obsession with the path to happiness/self-improvement.

By day, I'm a full-time Programming student; by night, I play Roller Derby (badly)

Wow! What is LARP?
I am happy to hear about your interests, and I am sure you can probably help me a lot in understanding the role of forums in education. One of the suggestions one of our other participants made is to come up with a consciousness literacy program.

BTW I really liked the last sentence of your application paragraph: "sharing knowledge increases our ability to build ... so that people can further the reach of humanity as a whole"... how do you sense the internet as changing our interconnectivity?

I would prefer forums with the occasional live chat as well, because in my mind, Text is King! The live meetings would be awesome too, but I would prefer they not be too frequent. Could we meet in Second Life or OpenSim?

As for an introduction: I don't play nearly as much as I should! But I read a lot of comic books, see a lot of movies, and I am kind of baseball-obsessive. By day, I'm a professor of philosophy and a freelance writer. I suppose I'm Catwoman by night. My profile sports a picture of my gorgeous kitty Davey. :-)

What else am I supposed to do today? It might be best for me to log off and move along, and check back tomorrow. Would that work?

I'm keeping a good thought for you and your Mom, Miriam!

Thanks so much Beth. Mom is better today.
Hey, yeh.. today is kind of sketchy, and I am so sorry. But here is a great thing you could help me with. Actually I am quite new to forums and it is a kind of new medium for me. Voice has a lot of problems but sometimes the live thing is good. I'll write up a list of questions people can chew on, and then also perhaps..
you could help us get set up on Second Life or OpenSim, because I am familiar with neither. There is a nice etherpad that is available for us on P2PU but... hm, not for the moment, I have lost my link.
And,
whenisgood.net is recommended to use as a "group meeting set-up" time. Please feel free, any of y'all, to help me out with tech stuff, not my forte. Suggestions and peer support also rule!
So let me ask you a quick question: What is about about Text that you find great? What do you like about it? Just wondering

Best
M

I am interested in experiencing the "etherpad," because that's new to me, and I love new!

I love Text (see? I capitalize it!) because I remember what I read, and I respond with greater depth than I do to information delivered via conference call or Skype. In other words, my brain is much better connected to my eyes than it is to my ears!

Many others will tell you they prefer text because in the very old days of RPG, that's all there was. That's not me - I'm old enough, but wasn't playing D&D online in the early days of the internet! I was at the bar playing trivia, LOL!

I'll look into OpenSim as a possible meeting place for us. I've been wanting to play in it, so this is a good opportunity. I'll get back to you -- but probably not till Friday.

For now, I'll sign off, and I'll be back tomorrow! That will give others a chance to check in and weigh in.

Thanks, Miriam! Good news about your Mom!

BTW, the learning curve for OpenSim is probably too steep for us to use it in the class, and anyway, since we have participants from Brazil to Geneva, synchronous meetings might be too onerous, anyway. Don't you think?
