Can use of OER empower educators to share materials and improve the outcomes for their learners?

Summary

At a time when commercial textbook prices are soaring and a fundamental shift in the way we access and create information has occurred, why not consider using or authoring an open textbook?  Open licensing means that you can freely incorporate open resources into a textbook that meets the needs of learners in your course and provide re-usable resources for other educators.

In this course, we will learn together how to find high-quality open textbooks and open educational resources and adapt them for re-use.   We will explore different authoring and hosting platforms such as Connexions, Wikibooks, Wikieducator, LeMill, and iTunes University while ensuring that students with learning disabilities and mobile devices can also access materials.     Open Licensing models will be a key component of the course as we gain understanding about what can be freely used, copied, modified and how we can make our materials available for re-use.

The use of weekly discussion forums and our community meetings will be the primary way to connect with each other around the course learning objectives as we share our insights and tribulations with others in the class.   You will develop an OER project in a small team and work asynchronously on this throughout the six week course.

Several guest speakers from the OER community will join us during the community meetings sharing their experiences and answering questions for those who are starting on their journey with open textbooks and open educational resources.

Learning objectives

1.  Understand the definition of open  educational resources and textbooks and be able to articulate the benefits for learners, educators, and institutions.

2.  Search for open textbooks or open educational resources based on a course outline, find peer and accessibility reviews, and evaluate overall suitability for use in an online or traditional classroom. Understand the necessary steps to adopt an open textbook for a course in your learning environment.

3.  Understand how the different open licensing options work.  Determine the best license to use for revising or remixing open educational resources or textbooks at your learning institution.   Determine if open educational resources appear to have accessibility problems that may impact learners with disabilities.

4.  Evaluate different open authoring platforms and select the best one for developing an open textbook or educational resource in your learning environment.

5.  Evaluate different online communities for sharing and supporting open educational resource development.    Be able to articulate the benefits and liabilities of several platforms.

6.  Share the OER resources or research that your team created with the course participants using a collaborative tool.  Provide constructive feedback to other course teams on their project.

Hi, my name is Margaret "Peggy" Ellington, and I am an associate professor of English at Georgia Southwestern State University. Besides teaching undergrads, I've just been notified that a new Masters of English w/focus on Critical Literacies has been approved. Since I conceived and shepherded this project through our Board of Regents and SACs, I've been named director. I'm interested in learning more about Open Textbooks because textbooks in this field are few--the literacies are changing and expanding almost daily. I need help with this project.
