Welcome to the Spring 2011 Conflict Resolution Citizen Circle!

Since we have over 40 participants registered, we will be relying primarily on the "Forums" function of P2PU to communicate: each week, I will create a new discussion thread based upon that week's topic, as outlined in the syllabus. In addition to the discussion forum, I would like for us to break into smaller groups that will communicate via Skype (or a similar platform) each week. In a few minutes, I will post a discussion thread for us to determine together how best to create these small discussion groups. I hope that we can establish these quickly and begin our chats next week!

Please keep in mind that this is a peer-led course, and your input is not only welcomed but essential for our success. While I do have a background in conflict resolution, I am not an expert, and the topics that I think are important are not necessarily the same topics that you would like to learn about. This class will be tailored to the needs of the students, so let me know if there is something you would like to cover that is not in the syllabus, or if you have suggestions regarding course requirements, materials, practices, etc.

Our first discussion will be based upon William Ury's TED talk entitled "The Walk from 'No' to 'Yes'" (http://www.ted.com/talks/william_ury.html). Many of you have already submitted wonderfully thoughtful responses to the video with your course application - I invite you to share these insights on our class forum, which I will post by January 26!

As it is our first week of class, I would like for us to establish a "social contract," whereby we determine a set of guidelines and expectations for all of us to follow throughout the course. I will post a thread on the Forums section for this. You are also encouraged to use this thread to make suggestions for the course. Using our discussion, I will create a social contract for everyone's approval, as well as an updated syllabus based upon your needs.

Finally, I would like to apologize for my tardiness in contacting all of you - I have just returned from studying abroad in Cambodia, where I didn't have the opportunity (or even internet access, at times) to get in touch. I am back and mostly recovered from the jet lag, and would be happy to respond to any questions/concerns you may have!

Conflict resolution is something that I am very interested in and passionate about, and I look forward to sharing and learning with all of you!

Regards,
Emily Ludwin Miller

In particular, I am interested in learning techniques that can help defuse a situation and move all parties to a problem solving mode quickly.

Looking forward to participating in our discussions.

Greetings Emily et al,

My name is Trevor and I will be joining the class from Toronto, Ontario. My past professional life was spent in Corporate Sales and Project Management. As Joe W already mentioned, conflict in this arena is a very common experience. Learning to navigate these minefields was essential to success. I left that life behind largely because it consumed too much of my headspace. Now I manage a small retail operation where conflict can still be a very common occurrence, but definitely with much lower stakes.

All this being said, my biggest goal is to manage conflict with my young son more effectively. Any of you that have children know that conflict with a child can be infinitely more challenging than with adults since many of the same "rules of engagement" simply do not apply. At the same time, it has also occurred to me that many world conflicts seem, from the outside looking in, to be similar in nature. In other words, seemingly irrational viewpoints diametrically opposed to real or perceived adversaries. I figured that if this course could help me better understand the mechanics of conflict, perhaps through better modeling my boy might grow to be a part of a solution rather than perpetuating current problems.

Best regards,

Trev

Greetings! You came back in time :D

Well, my interest in joining this course is to improve myself as a person.

Personally, from time to time I have found myself having trouble resolving conflicts between me and my friends when we work together in project, and it sometimes result in me losing friends. Which is very sad.

I hope through this course I could learn more about conflict resolution and open up thoughts that I previously didn't think of.

PS. I will be moving house tommorow, thus I could be late in my first week assignments. I hope I would be able to catch up.

Greetings Peers, I'm Julie Carle, a Kiwi (NZer) living in Rome where I have been consulting for the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the UN and the International Land Coalition. In both organisations, combating poverty is a key focus. Land and resourses are often involved and resolving conflict is a necessary skill. We have lived and worked in many developing countries trying to help rehabilitate them after periods of conflict; sometimes imposed from within (Cambodia, Sri Lanka)and Vietnam where the conflict was imposed from outside. In Singapore we observed Govt housing and social policies to integrate the different ethic groups.

Last year I completed a Masters in Online and Distance Education. I found the elearning experience very engaging. I learned about P2PU at the Open Education Resources conference in Barcelona last October so was extremely keen to particiate in a P2PU course. Conflict Resolution looked to be the most relevant course for my background and personal aspirations. Like most of the posts above I am keen to better apply conflict resolution in my daily life.

Hello new friends. I hope that through this experience we may all grow in some way that benefits us and the world we live in.

My name is Scott Marth and I am a Deputy Sheriff working in rural county of Illinois. I have been in law enforcement here for over two decades. Much of what I do centers on responding to crisis and conflict. No call is the same, and time is of critical importance. Conflict resolution for me is done on my feet and many times it is hindered by my acting under color of law. In order to be good, I have to be a quick sell and move past the television education that most persons have about what a police officer is going to do or capable of doing in any given situation.

I hope to learn something from every person in this class. Everyone has something to teach us, if we only stop long enough to listen. I am thrilled that we have so many different cultures represented here. I think that is going to make this whole experience so much more powerful.

May peace follow you,
Scott

Hello Everyone,
My name is Samantha and I currently work for one of the largest credit unions in Canada. I'm hoping to gain some new skills that will help me in my career, as I'm having a hard time mastering the subtle nuances of mediation and turning a No into a Yes without coming across as too pushy and argumentative.
I certainly hope that I don't come across that way in this course!
I look forward to exploring this fascinating subject with all of you. There seems to be a wonderful melange of personalities and backgrounds, and I can only imagine that this will bring a real richness to our discussions!
Thank you for allowing me to take this journey with you!
