Interesting article on the gender gap in the wiki world

Very interesting read. We are experimenting with using wikis in a classroom setting where this is obviously very relevant, but I'd not really thought about which groups are going to find it more uncomfortable to contribute because of the nature of wikis as a public forum. I think the fear of investing time in an article and being metaphorically shot down by being edited over can be quite powerful for those who are new to the idea.

I agree that many people could see that "provisionality" of wiki content a little bit discouraging. And related to the gender question in Wikipedia contributions, I also have the impression it has to do with a sort "hacker culture" still dominated mainly by men mentality...

However, one of my most revealing experiences when doing workshops about Wikipedia with teenagers is that all of them use it as its main resource for homework, but only a few know its content can be easily modified (or any other notion about wikis).

I would like to know what's your experience around that Ona. I imagine in the School of Computer Science at the uni students are already aware of the features of wikis or have previous notions, don't they?

We have a number of undergrad students helping us out on our project, and it seemed that whilst there was a lot of knowledge about wikis, and they were generally quite clued up about the advantages of collaborative ways of working, comparatively few of them had actual practical experience editing any kind of wiki. There are obviously a lot of factors that play into this, one of which may be general teen apathy, but I think another factor is that the lack of WYSIWYG editing - this means that even for relatively techie people, at least a little effort needs to be invested in thinking about how editing works before going ahead. I wonder if this is a factor in the gender split, that girls (particularly young ones!) are more likely to be put off very early on because the markup language looks like code? We do some outreach work with school children and one of the biggest challenges is fighting the assumption that Computing and IT are a) boring and b) impossibly difficult. So many kids write off the discipline, and of those that don't the gender split is pretty depressing.

I know exactly what you mean :) Related to design and WYSIWYG editing we should consider how extensions like the one below and "cooler" skin designs may help to minimize that barrier. Although the hardest work is educational/conceptual in this case and not simply "technical"...
