Facebook Group

Hey everyone. I just formed one of those new Facebook groups for our class. Here's the link: http://on.fb.me/openjournalismfb

I hope it will be another forum for everyone to chat. (I know some of you are hardcore IRC, but join anyway!)

Week Two Assignment Suggestion: Develop Techniques to Evaluate Articles Along Political Spectrum

As a consumer of news, I frequently am not aware of the hidden biases of articles, tweets and other sources of information. Imagine a college student with little sense of history listening to Glenn Beck. Without passing judgement, it is fairly obvious that Glenn's writing have a particular slant.

- As a user, I can determine a left-independent-right value so that I can understand the political bias of information. This covers the basic concept.

Virtual Machine for Semantic MediaWiki (hacker)

I just ran a search and could not find any images for a virtual machine that runs Semantic MediaWiki. I would think that most organizations would want to have internal wikis instead of external ones to protect their information. I wonder if developing a SM image for VirtualBox would be worth spending the time? Do you think anyone needs such an image?

Assignment for week one. Ideas

I´ve been thinking about how to solve the assignment for this week. Pulling data programmatically. My first thought was to parse the page finding all the <a > </ a> tags, where the href would be the source and what´s inside the tags the fact related to that source.

First problem when doing that: some texts simply don´t have hiperlinks. Bad journalism, i know, but you can find plenty of that out there.

'Letters from Haiti' - should links to NGOs have been included?

I know that I would have donated had such links been available. At what point does the article change from journalism to shil?

Google's irony: supporting open source, monopolize the advertising marketing. Can journalism live in that model?

Google's irony: There is something that make noise in my head since a while... Let me put in this way: Since the beginning of the Internet, two forces appear to discuss the status quo at the net: on the one hand, large corporations and some states they seek to keep the Internet standard, and on the other, other corporations, organizations and users - and even some states - who claim that the standard should rest open and neutral.

Github collaboration

Hi all. So I created a github account at http://github.com/openjournalism. Login as openjournalism/moonmadness - then feel free to start creating repositories (if you're a developer) or proposing projects via this thread (if that sounds like a good idea). Collaboration is a great way to start and seems to be the guiding principle of this course!

The audio toolkit of the programmer journalist

Hi all. As I mentioned in my introduction, I'm a developer (PHP/Ruby), blogger and digital media explorer and over the last year or so have been heavily involved with the UK-based startup Audioboo (audioboo.fm), who created an iPhone app that allows the user to upload high quality audio files to the web, recorded on the phone. They gained a fair amount of traction when journalists and bloggers (notably the Guardian) started using the app, famously during the G20 protests in London, and have started to make inroads in the States.

Course implementation/technical issues

I noticed some people were having difficulty connecting to the audio stream of the conference, I wonder if people have thoughts on how the course can be more accessible. Or if people want to tell what problems they're having participating.

One thing that I think would be great in the spirit of open standards would be to have a standard SIP VoIP number to call in to rather than requiring a Skype account, because skype is not very cross-platform. But maybe this is a limitation of the conference service.
