Open Journalism & the Open Web

Course organiser: Phillip Smith
About the Course Organiser:

Hacks/Hackers, Mozilla, Medill, and others have teamed up with t to run a six-week peer-to-peer course for "hacks" and hackers. The overall theme of the course will be "Open Journalism on the Open Web," and -- being a peer-to-peer course that is all about "open" -- we need your involvement to make the course a success.

As part of Mozilla's ongoing work to keep the web open, we've been supporting a number of exciting education projects through the Mozilla Drumbeat initiative. We are partnering with Peer-to-Peer University (P2PU) to create the School of Webcraft -- the ultimate environment in which to learn the craft of open and standards-based web development. And P2PU also has a shared interest in journalism -- and recently offered a Digital Journalism course with Joi Ito of the Keio Graduate School of Media Design.

The  Open Journalism on the Open Web course is an outcome from the Future of News and Civic Media 2010 event. This is a Knight Foundation supported initiative.

Can hacks and hackers work together in the new online news world?

Summary

Hacks/Hackers, Mozilla, the Medill School of Journalism, The Media Consortium and others are teaming up to develop a solid six-week online curriculum that will benefit both "hacks" and hackers (that's journalists & programmers, in plain English). Each week the course will focus on a different topic, and each week the participants will be joined by a different subject-matter expert (or two) from the field of news innovation. The course readings, online participation, and a seminar are expected to require roughly 4-6 hours per week.

The topics that are currently in development are:

  1. The fundamentals of journalism and the Open Web
  2. Project management
  3. Edit it. Fork it. The art of collaboration and journalism
  4. Big Ugly Datasets For Thumb-Fingered Journalists
  5. Business Model for Journalism
  6. Data journalism and government

This is a Knight Foundation supported initiative.

I am interested in the course but dont want to take up one of the 40 spots. I would fall in the journalist:inexperienced catagory. Wil the course info be archived so that I might review/learn the material presented without taking up a spot? THanks for the info. DB

Hey there DB, Yes, indeed,

Yes, indeed, the course will be archived and "open" to all. Regardless, I would encourage you to apply and we'll see if it's a good fit. :-)

I am a hack with low to no programming skills but a strong desire to figure out how interactivity, widgets, databases and other new tools to inform, entertain and build community. Before I apply I would like to know what the course costs and I also have to make sure that I will not have a conflict. Are there still hack spots open? what is the drop dead date for signup; and what is the cost? Thanks, Tom

As a Drupal Developer enrolled into Social Communication and Media Studies at Campinas University, I can't clearly see which of the spots I have just applied to. But I hope I can share all I have learned from the FOSS Comunity and from the Free Media movements...

I'd really love to take this

Would really like to participate, but even as a staff member at one of Africa's leading J-Schools with a bandwidth quota of 500MB a month, the video streams make participation quite challenging. Imagine how more so for academics from less equipped institutions in developing states?
Alternatives, solutions?

Hey there Jude,

We are thinking of running the same course but targeted toward African countries in the near future. Please stay tuned. This is (hopefully!) the first of many.

Phillip.

Jude, I think the community

Jude, I think the community could probably manage to provide transcripts of the video sessions. I generally prefer to read, too. Assuming I'm accepted, and if I have the time, I'll try to type up transcripts of each video session. Oh - on a closer look, it appears that the video will be live. I'm not sure how valuable an after-the-fact transcript is.

The obvious solution for live video would be a low-bandwidth audio-only option. It could be that there's something out there that can already do this.

There will also be all kinds of non-video media, though. I'd think it would be a valuable experience even without the video or the transcripts.
