Learning about inspiring people in maths, the arts and sciences is terribly exciting for me. It makes me realise that so much is possible. If you have any interesting links about people or anything related loosely to what we are doing, please post them here!

I will kick this off with Alan Kay, computer scientist, educational pioneer and jazz guitarist.

He has an amazingly elastic way for weaving education, creativity and computing into a single fabric. Here, he presents at TED:

Exploring and Teaching - Skeptism and Mistakes

This thread comes from 2 thoughts and if / when you have time I would really appreciate any thoughts on this. Even quick reactions are good.
(a) I read this headline - "Teaching with Skepticism and more ..." and
(b) I didn't easily see that the diagonals split the rectangle into 4 equal areas and was willing to say so in my video.

Make a Stopwatch with GeoGebra - it is easy

Esther's son made a clock face http://homeschool-math.wikispaces.com/triangle-in-circle (scroll down) with GeoGebra.

Also, notice how he connected our two exercises (the equilateral triangle and learning GeoGebra) - that was particulary wonderful for me - engagement and learning. (And I loved those computer games.)

Getting started with GeoGebra

Ikem found a good challenge for getting started with GeoGebra (with a little bit of math to make it interesting).

Draw a line segment AC. Now create a square whose diagonal is AC.

I must confess - I am absolutely hopeless with forums. So first Ikem, let me say thank-you for starting the first thread and isn't this fantastic - what an interesting community of participants!

I now see how to start a discussion (thank-goodness). But, I do not see how to reply to a discussion and get the html menu which allows me links, embeds and access to source code as I get now when I start a thread. If anybody wants to make a screencast on that for me - I would GREATLY appreciate it.

Introducing... (say hi!)

Hello, it's a bit quiet here, so I thought I'd kick it off. Thank you to the course tutor for contributing such a playful, creative idea. I love maths (I'm English; we add the "s"!) but am a bit afraid to come back to it. I was competent as a kid, but never really "got" it. To suffer through the stodgy, boring teaching methods at school was probably a reason why, but to hear Stephen Hawking talk about physics, he talks of seeing colours and shapes in his mind's eye... Co-incidence? My hunch is it's not.
