Constructivist Calculus

Dove-tailing off the Week 3 discussion I am wondering what everybody thinks about the following questions:

How can we make learning Calculus tangible (i.e. physical and kinesthetic)?

How can we find personally, and collectively, relevant situations to explore the concepts and techniques of Calculus?

How can we encourage dialogue around our personal experiences with and understanding of Calculus?

Please feel free to add any additional questions to the discussion as my perspective is natually limited :-)

week 3: post mortem

Hi:

I am not one to draw something out when it seems it's not working. Apologies for those who for some reason feel that the course *is* working, or whose participation has just been delayed for some reason or another. If someone wants to "revive" the course please be my guest. I will be happy to "follow along". As it stands, it seems to me this course isn't working for a number of reasons.

week 2: what's up

Hi all:

The plan for the course continues to be the same: find problems, solve them, post the solutions. If you get stuck, ask for help. This week's topic is "limits and continuity", which you should be able to find amply described in any self-respecting Calculus text book.

Week 1: resources

Today, no discussion of sequences would be complete without mentioning the Online Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences: http://oeis.org/Seis.html although in calculus we will tend to be more interested in sequences that "converge", in other words, sequences whose terms get closer and closer to a given number. That's a bit tricky to do with just integers.

Week 1: assignments

This week's topic is "

sequences & series". Our goal will be to amass a collection of *solved* problems in our shared forum at
http://metameso.org/vanilla/index.php?p=/categories/short-calculus. There are probably 100s of calculus books on the market, and tons of related resources on the internet, and I don't care which one(s) you use. I'll post another thread about "resources" -- but the #1 priority is on finding and solving (or discussing) problems.

Hi all: Having not heard any particular preferences, I'm going to make the first course meeting for this Saturday, the 29th of January, at 16:00 GMT. If you can't make it at that time please let me know by email (holtzermann17@gmail.com) and we can work out an alternate time.

Meeting times - and initial introductions

Please follow up in this thread to say what time would work for you for a first meeting, and whether the same time might work for you in each of six weeks of the course. I've suggested 18:00 GMT if we're to meet on a weekday, but can be somewhat flexible about this. I'm also willing to meet on weekends if that works better (15:00 GMT?).

Please make a note here - and perhaps add a few words of introduction. We'll have a chance for more of that in the meeting too :)
