Thanks for coming everyone.

Week three is another theory discussion, please watch the TED talk by Tim Berners Lee on 'The Next Web' (http://www.ted.com/talks/tim_berners_lee_on_the_next_web.html). Also please continue to review the materials I posted last week if you haven't finished yet.

Come to next week's discussion with questions. Continue to work on your projects and bring some sort of drawing or mock-up of what you're building to class. I'd like for each of you to show your mock-up and explain which parts you don't know how to build. We'll then offer up a technical explanation.

Preparing for Week 2

Hi Everyone,

Please remember to submit your writing assignment reflecting on last week's discussion.

It's time to start getting ready for week two. You should be thinking about your projects and drawing pictures, you won't have to share your sketches and wireframes in class until week three, but it's a good idea to get started now. In addition to drawing up some wireframes you should begin to try and locate the datasets that you'd like to use if you haven't already. If you're having difficulty finding what you need, please post a discussion topic so that we can help you find appropriate data.

To prepare for week two's class, I'd like you to read a bit about web standards, how the web works, and basic tools. If you're already experienced with HTML/CSS, I'd still like for you to at least skim over the materials and move on to some more advanced reading that I've noted below. It looks like there is a lot to read, but it's not so bad. Try and pace yourselves and read through a little each day. Remember you can always ask for help in our chat room #p2pu-open-web on irc.freenode.net (http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=p2pu-open-web).

You might want to try and work on a sample webpage as you read through the materials, it will help you understand better. Please come to class with questions, I'm depending on you to tell me what needs further explanation and examples.

If you have a tough time understanding, just do your best and we'll help you with your questions in class. If this stuff is too easy for you, go out and find something to learn and share in class.

Hosting Projects

During the 1PM EST class today, John raised the question of how to provide hosting for peoples projects. Apparently there is a good ratio of people with programming backgrounds and people new to programming. Given this, the idea was tossed around that we could form some groups, with at least one member in each group who was comfortable providing resources and or helping people get their projects hosted. I thought that this was a great idea, and really fits in with the spirit of peer-to-peer learning.

Overall, I'm very pleased with the outcome. We had a great turnout, and it was a pleasure to meet you all. I'm looking forward to building some mashups with you!
