Course organiser: Karen Fasimpaur
About the Course Organiser:

My name is Karen. I have run several small companies in ed tech and also have several other hobbies I'm passionate about marketing, including open educational resources.

I have an MBA in marketing and something else I can't remember, but I don't think that contributed much to my marketing skills.

I am active in social media, and you can find me on Twitter, FB, and various blogs, sometimes as myself and sometimes on behalf of clients.

I'm excited about this course because I love sharing things I'm passionate about and because I believe in open education and peer learning. I know that I will learn as much in this course as anyone. Hang on for a wild ride!

How can small enterprises use innovative marketing methods to share their passion + increase their user base? #marketing #p2pu

Entrepreneurial organizations often have limited time and budgets for marketing, but also have some great advantages that can be leveraged to increase their user base and achieve success.

This course will look at traditional principles of marketing and how they can be applied to small entrepreneurial enterprises, including not only business, but non-profits and other pursuits.

We'll look at the most effective marketing tools for these types of enterprises, including customized direct mail, email, public relations, social media, and user-generated content. Course participants will share their own experiences (as a consumer and as a leader for their own enterprise or cause), and we'll share and analyze best practices.

Each course participant will be expected to write about their experiences and learning throughout the course. All participants are invited to personalize the course to meet their own learning objectives. One way to do this is through the assignments for each week, which will include "make-your-own-case-studies" and other activities through which participants can design an learning activity that meets their own goals.

The final four weeks of the course will allow participants to design and pursue a project to advance their own marketing experience. Ideally, this project will be a real-life exercise to increase the user base of something you're passionate about.

Most of the communications for this course will be asynchronous; however, I will keep online office hours in the course chat room and a tentative topic for this time will be set. Please indicate your preference of times for this here. (The time(s) set for this will be the same for each week, so just indicate your general availability for the week of Jan. 26.)
(See more details in Introduction + Week 1.)

I got it, Stoney. Thanks.

For everyone, I am currently accumulating applications for review. I believe the plan is that course enrollment will "officially" open on Jan. 12 and close on Jan. 19. I'll let everyone know their status as soon as possible after that (most likely on Jan. 20).

Looking forward to it!

This class sounds fantastic!

Dennis et al,

Applications will close tomorrow (Wed., 1/19), and I will let everyone know their status by the end of the following day (Thurs.). I have tried to send everyone a msg acknowledging that I received your application, but with all the applications and the limitations of the email system on P2PU, I may have missed a few.

If you haven't heard from me and want to make sure I received your application, feel free to email me (karen AT k12opened DOT com).

We have received a good number more applications for this class than I can accommodate, but I am going to increase the maximum number a bit to accommodate as many as possible.

In the meantime, if you have decided that this course is not for you or if you don't think you have the time to contribute to all of our learning, it would be helpful if you could drop or let me know before tomorrow to make room for others.

You all look like you have a lot to contribute to our peer learning experience, and I am eager to begin!

Sad that I didn't get in but

Any chance I can still sign up? Some last minute cancellations, maybe? I have recently started a business and the timing would so match my 'going to market'...

Masooma, we aren't taking any
