Reactions to our first class

Go back to: General discussion

Please use this thread to post your reactions to our first class. I'd like to know what went well and what was problematic, especially from people who had difficulty in the call. If you have ideas on what we could do better in the future, please share!

Overall, I'm very pleased with the outcome. We had a great turnout, and it was a pleasure to meet you all. I'm looking forward to building some mashups with you!

The video chat service Tokbox worked very well from my point of view and I like this form of communication as it is personal, visual and therefore more effective and engaging. Looking forward for more.

Really enjoyed the first class. Thanks John for facilitating. Tokbox worked well, and although a few alternatives were thrown out that might be more open, I think it'd be worthwhile to stick with what works for now and explore alternatives for a future course. Looking forward to being part of the bigger group next week.

Paul, I agree. In future iterations of this course we can investigate services other than TokBox but for now I think we should just stick to what works. I look forward to seeing you all again next week.

I enjoyed the first class quite a bit, and I'm looking forward to the larger combined session next week, and to learning more about everyone's project proposals.

I thought the first class went really well. The video chat service was surprisingly trouble free given the number of students. Very excited to get started.

I was really amazed at the diversity of participants, despite the difficulty posed by the different time zones.

I agree with all.Tokbox was really good and allowed for a great discussion. Great find!

In some ways, I thought the experience was even better than a classroom - in the sense that I could see all my classmates face-to-face and observe/ follow their reactions. In a traditional class where we sit facing the facilitator or even if in a circle, you can only directly see very few people.

I also liked the gestures that we used. Raising one's hands to ask a question/ interrupt. Thumbs up sign to indicate approval.

There were very few technical glitches and most of them were at the user's ends - so should be fixed by the second class.

Lastly, it was great to interact with such a diverse and great group of people.

I had technical difficulties that I hope to overcome this weekend-- the applet froze at the menu asking for confirmation to use my webcam, and yet I was still able to hear the conversation, repeating over itself twice with a 5 second delay. =p It was kind of trippy.
