Project idea: Approach and develop climate change communication strategies

Go back to: General discussion

Questions:

  • How to make local effects of global climate change perceivable?
  • How to communicate locally what is happening globally?
  • How do we imagine our future on present facts?
  • How to transfer the essence of the IPCC report to local communities?
  • How can we anticipate the (long-term) consequences of our doing?
  • How can we foster global empathy on a local level?
  • How can we escape the action-reaction pattern?

Statement:

My concern is the proper communication of information about the Climate Change. I actually started to ignore it because of all the bad talks and quarrels in the science community and the disability of our politicians to communicate to the people. A climate change, whether man-made or not does not matter, will actually put strain on the neighbours of a heavily affected zone/country. Social, economic and environmental consequences are imaginable globally, but need to be calculated locally.

In my opinion it is not a good decision to wait until the problems knock on our front-door and rub their shoes on the carpet. But that is what happens, especially in western democratic countries with its 3 to 5 year terms of political rule. Politicians, in their need to simplify (or their believe of the necessity to do so), are not able to foster a productive dialogue, neither is the general media.

To avoid a populist and extremist boom in times of crisis, people have to be informed and educated about alternatives, about how they can face and control their own destiny. If they are already prepared and have undertaken proper measures, they will not need to follow someone, as they will lead themselves.

I think the first step is teach people how to over come the fear to the crisis, right. I belivie if I meet the situation like that, I have no idea what should be done and how to do.

The lack of information and therefore understanding/knowledge of a situation/event results in fear. I think it depends on the local situation, whether there is already fear (due to current disasters), fear on possible future events (predictions) or no fear at all but ignorance. So you are right to see fear as one of different obstacles in communicating to people.
