Small Discussion Groups / Citizen Circles

Go back to: General discussion

Thank you to everyone who has signed up for Conflict Resolution! I am very pleasantly surprised at the overwhelming response this course has received, and am looking forward to working with you over the next eight weeks.

Because the number of participants is much higher than I had originally anticipated, I feel it is necessary for us to create several smaller chat groups to supplement the online discussion. While the Forum is a good platform for expression, smaller groups will better facilitate discussion and will allow for these discussions to delve a bit deeper.

It has been suggested that we create these groups according to time zones, so that everyone can participate at time that works for him or her. I think this is a great idea!

Another possibility for some of you would be to create real-life Citizen Circles, whereby you meet face-to-face with other class participants within your local area. I believe that I saw several participants from Toronto - would it be feasible for you to meet in person once a week, and have this replace the online chat component? For those of you who do not live near to other participants, would you be interested in creating a Citizen Circle? You are more than welcome to invite friends to join, or contact me for help setting one up.

Once we have formed our chat groups, I think it would be useful for each group to select a "secretary" who will report back to the entire class on the main points of their discussion for the week. This way, we can all learn from each other without having to spend a great deal of time listening to multiple discussions on the same topic!

Does anyone have other suggestions for how to go about creating chat groups or offline Citizen Circles? Other ways of creating effective dialogue groups?

I live in London Ontario close to Toronto but not so close I could not travel there for the chats but I would like to be included in that group if it takes on a different format.

Face-to-face is definitely a good idea, how I wish I live in Toronto instead! GMT -8 here.

Also, maybe those who are morning people can meet with others across the world at night? Once I woke up at 6am to do an online conference from Germany... I promptly discovered I'm not a morning person.

I'm also in GMT+1 so it makes 2 of us (Julie Carle). I'm based in Prague.
My suggestion is to group 2/3 time zones

Example: We set a meeting at 8 GMT+1 and also someone from could join at 7 GMT and if it isn't too late some one at 9 GMT+2

I am based in Frankfurt, Germany GMT +1. I am with you Veronica and Julie. Is there a website or group that we can use solely for our group discussions? Any suggestions where we will meet? I am not a big fan of this website chat since it doesn't show any conversation history? How about facebook groups or google groups? Please let me know. I am also on Skype if you would like to make direct contact.

I would be in for Skype, we can set a large group of people if needed for chat, and for call I've tried with 6 and everything worked properly.
How many people should we set for a same time zone?
My skype is veronica.amestoy when adding me please mention the is for "conflict resolution" otherwise I might not add you :)

Hi there folks. I am not in this course but just wanted to chime in with a suggestion from the Social Innovation in Education course I participated in last semester, which used face-to-face groups where people lived.

First, if you don't have a group, you can "bring a friend" to the course where you live who may not already be signed up. Have you thought about someone who might want to join with you? We found it worked great to pair this with dinners at people's homes, or any other time people would naturally enjoy getting together anyway, so that it didn't feel like an additional burden for those we brought in. And for us, this really helped people stay motivated, engaged, and to feel supported in the course. There's so much value in being able to see another person's face and reactions in the same room as you while you're on skype.

Second, for those that couldn't get a friend to join their local citizen circle, we paired those people into small groups like it looks like you are now doing. This strategy worked well, so I think it will for you too.

As for best website for this discussion. I do know that at least one other SoSI course is using google groups for their discussions and another is considering using a Facebook group, so use whatever is best for you.

Good luck! This is shaping up to be a great course!

I am fine with skype or any other media. I live in Vienna Austria (GMT+1). In fixing the chat time we need to consider our working ours to minimize conflicts from the begining. I am available to participate from 7pm my local time, weekdays. Excited to get on board with vibrant discussions on this course

Hi everyone,

How are these chat groups shaping up so far? Is everybody in one? Please let me know if you are still not in one, and what your time zone is, and I will try to organize the rest of us.

For those of you who have formed groups: how have your chats gone? What has worked for you? What are some challenges you have faced so far?

For those of you who are in and around Washington, D.C. - would you like to arrange a weekly meet-up?

Emily and other folks in the DC metro area,
If it's not too late, I would be very interested in scheduling some in person meet ups. My schedule is pretty flexible. After 5:30 on week nights somewhere in the city would be great for me. I live in Takoma and work in the Shaw neighborhood. I know of at least one, if not two, other persons who expressed an interest in forming a circle in DC. Are there others?
