  • Our Jackson Water Stewardship Adventure is an effort to move to the forefront of water stewardship in metal manufacturing, fabrication, and machinery manufacturing. If we do it right, not only can we become better stewards of our part of the Great Lakes basin, which protects current and future generations, but we can spur economic development so badly needed. This venture will to reach out to the 5,473 metalworking employees in Jackson County Michigan from 175 establishments and ask them to join us in remaking Jackson Michigan into a green advanced manufacturing hotspot. In this first step we are seeking people who want to help green their practices and who will discuss what that means to them. We plan to video record their stories to share widely through the Sustainability Studio network and other networks.

Public opinion poll results show that people don't know the greatest threats to water quality, the importance of water to the economy, or the impact their actions have on water quality: http://www.jsonline.com/news/opinion/115226089.html

Success to us will be reached when a significant majority, 80% of the manufacturers in Jackson County Michigan are using green practices. We will conduct a baseline assessment in order to measure rates of use of green practices. The project started in January 2011 with the P2PU Sustainability Studio and will end once full adoption is achieved. The project is located in Jackson County Michigan and could be expanded to the Upper Grand River Watershed or beyond. The people involved so far include Larry Luce, Monica Day, Kat Kulchinski, Paul Rentschler and Bill Rayl. The project aligns best with economic vitality sustainability competency.

The next steps involve completing a short informational video about the project, increasing involvement among establishments, conducting a baseline survey of green practices and an assessment of impacts of current practices on the watershed. To increase involvement we aim to host gatherings, trainings, and present to community groups about the project. Already we have shared our idea at the Quiet Water Symposium, a gathering of 1,500 - 2,000 non-motorized boat water sport and camping enthusiasts March 5, 2011 at the MSU Pavilion.
