1st assignment problems

Go back to: General discussion

I am not a website designer so I don't have the time to create a photoblog from scratch.

I went to the codex resourses noted in the assignment notes

And I came up to the usual problem and is the reason why I wanted to take this course. The info in the codex is out of date.

The photoblog plugin that seemed the easist to setup has not been updated for 3.0.x version of WP

So I am going to have to spend more time than I expected and get a site that I wouldn't even pay someone to build for me.

If that is fine then great but if the objective is to have a polished site then I will need to skip the assignment because it is just over my head.

Any suggestions or help would be good

Hi Doug,

Sorry to hear you're having difficulties. In my humble opinion, the requirements don't exactly call for a photoblog since it's a photographer's site you're building. You might have better luck using the Gallery plugins on the second half of the page. Polished website or not, it's really just an opportunity to have fun with the software I think.

Best of luck!

Josh.

I've been told it's ok to use jquery and flickr API and that design doesn't matter at all, so i think you could make a simple template, make necessary pages and use a plugin you like.

I intend to take advantage of the fact that there are many free themes optimized to use many free image gallery plugins.

And it feels weird to say that, like I'm giving away my secrets or something. It's not like we're in competition with each other.

Hey Doug- there are some free photo style themes out there.

http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2011/01/27/free-minimal-swiss-design-wor...

Smashing is a great resource and if you search for free wp themes, you may find others that you like.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the feedback. Sorry for the vent I guess I was over thinking and fustrated that the Codex still not updated for 3.0

I think I will try the NextGen gallery plugin and a minimal theme.
@Son Tran I saw that link earlier today and might use one of them.

"It's not like we're in competition with each other."

I tried "PhotoQ Photoblog plugin" with latest WP as suggested here
http://codex.wordpress.org/Photoblogs_and_Galleries

and it works fine with default "PhotoQ" themes (it just display warning for version, no problem for it)

please post the issue that you find

Hi Doug

I'm sorry to hear your frustrations but very glad you posted. I think it's more than appropriate to take one of the many excellent free themes and customize it for the assignment client.

I'm taking "gallery" in the assignment to mean that the client's photographs need to be displayed in some way. I don't have time to build a "gallery" (where you have rows of photos leading to larger versions?) so I'm settling for a slider with 5 or so of my old pictures.

The slider plugin I used for the home page is this Coin Slider: http://workshop.rs/2010/05/coin-slider-4-wordpress/

It's the first time for me and I found it very easy to get up and running. Do read the comments, especially about the straight apostrophes in the paste code.

Don't forget that this is *community* learning, we're all here to help one another, to share knowledge in one field, gain knowledge in another.

I've always found that teaching someone else is the best way to learn - can't believe there's a whole community on teh interwebs who think that way too!

I'm so glad you posted this Doug - you're not alone, that's why we're on this course!

am trying out approaches to assignment 1 (part of the learning process for me). was giving "coin slider" a go... during the install of the plugin, there is "The plugin does not have a valid header." think i am missing something obvious.

Goede morgen Barbara!

I've created a subdomain to use for all of these assignments, I'll just change the site name each week. For example:

Main domain: myolddomain.com
Subdomain: sandbox.myolddomain.com

I've installed WordPress there, added some content but it doesn't matter if I delete it for the next assignment or build on it maybe.

Hope that helps :-)

Hi Barbra,
If you dont have live (online) url for demo your work you can create account in some free hosting site and host your work on it.
you can google "web hosting free" and select (it take time to identify correct host" but i think it may solve your issue temporary

also let us know if you find some good resource

You could also just use the [gallery] shortcode that is available in WordPress. You basically create a post/page, attach pictures to the page and the put the shortcode in the body of the page. It will create a gallery for you.

If my theme will stop breaking you can see mine here:

i dont want to use manual added image( i want to use post image and also how can i display multiple post image in gallery?)

thanks in advance

Ron Allison's picture
Ron Allison

The way I understand the [gallery] shortcode is it uses images attached the specific post or page you put the code in. So the pictures have to be attached to the page you are wanting to be the gallery. This may not work for what you are trying to do. Really it is a very simple solution, maybe not powerful enough to do what you want.

If you've uploaded images to your media are you can use those with the [gallery] shortcode. What you do is attach them to the post/page where you are using the [gallery] shortcode. You can do this in the media admin section. Just browse the pictures, then click attach. This assumes they aren't attached to another post/page. I do not think they can be attached to multiple pages. However, I'm still a noob at this so I could be wrong.

Are we supposed to be generating a full site with spam catcher, Google analytics, 404 ? pages and all? If so, I don't know how to do a full-bodied site. I was hoping we would be learning how to create one and tweak it from a basic site. I hope I am not in over my head here.

Based on the assignment you need to have WP setup out of the box with About, Contact, Services, and a Gallery page. And you need to post some sample posts and images in the gallery. If you use a theme already made up you don't need to create one from scratch. YMMV.

Alexey Polarny's picture
Alexey Polarny
Sat, 2011-01-29 08:49

All you need to do is a) to set up Wordpress on your server, apply any theme you want (it can be a free one or your custom template) b) create necessary pages c) where one of them is a gallery/portfolio page (it can be done in various ways by means of wordpress or jquery, you choose). As i undersatnd the assignment purpose is to find out whether we can set that CMS running and manage it or not. Don't worry about design, front-end stuff and functionality. Good luck :)

Hi Polly

Don't worry! We're all at varying levels of knowledge here from the "struggling" (me) to the "it's easy-peasy" (some other members of the group).

Alexey summed it up when he said that Nuno is looking for you to be able to install Wordpress and add a theme suitable for a photographer.

That theme can be as simple or complex as you feel comfortable with and can certainly be a ready made theme.

Would you like to share your theme and ask for help? We're all in this together!

I'm doing the same as Barbara, have a WP install on a subdomain called sandbox and that'll be for all our assignments through this course, I'll just change the "branding" where necessary. Where branding = site name and so on.

It doesn't matter if your site is called "Super Duper Photography" but the url is sandbox.yourdomain.com!

Thanks for all the help! Now I have one more super basic, first step question I probably should of asked before I started. What method should we be using to install Wordpress? Since I use HostGator, I installed using their Fantastico. But then I realized that I don't have access to those files and folders in FTP, when I went in Filezilla. If I should have done it through FTP, and will need to have access to that, let me know now, so that I can start over!

Daisy Morgan's picture
Daisy Morgan
Sat, 2011-01-29 17:14

Hi Polly

If you installed using Fantastico you might want to update WordPress immediately (security release) - Fantastico is often a little behind the most current WP (e.g. 3.0.2 rather than the now current 3.0.4). Here's the information about the latest version of WordPress: http://wordpress.org/download/

But it's very easily updated from the Dashboard once you've logged in ( when you're logged in at e.g. pollysdomain.com/wp-admin/ ).

I can't help specifically with Filezilla (I use FireFTP) but you should be able to access your files via ftp, it might just be a question of changing the settings? And your hosting company (HostGator) should be able to help with that if you have problems.

Good luck and do post back, I'm sure there are plenty here who know FileZilla and/or Hostgator!

I was discussing these auto-installers briefly with somebody on the IRC channel the other day. Personally, I never use them because I'm a little picky and always figure it will be slightly out of date. Admittedly, it may only benefit me psychologically.

Anyway, the person I was chatting with said that it did, in fact, install the latest version but it also installed a bunch of themes and plug-ins that they ended up wanting to uninstall. So, the fact that the package may be customized is another thing to consider.

If you do want to install it manually, wordpress has a handy url that always directs to a download of the most recent version: http://wordpress.org/latest

Hello Doug, you don't need to be a web desinger to make this assignement. You must only search and find a beautifaul free theme which it's desing would be for a portfolio, for a photo portfolio better. In this google search http://tinyurl.com/5udyr7t there are a lot of lists. Most of this themes they are prepared yet to make a photo gallery with your posts. So maybe you only have to setting and upload images for your posts.
And of course, first, you have to have setup de wordpress in a server, but there are yet a lot of comments here talking about.
I hope this helps to you.

If this can help also, here is the url of my assignement:

Hello Polly, despite what Daisy says is true, actually I'm not using a plugin for this contact form, the form is already integrated into the theme. If you want I can give you the code. As Daisy sayd, the page had the contact form 7 plugin because I put it before realizing that this theme had his own form build in. Now I've disabled the plugin and no longer goes to the head of the page.
Anyway, I must say I prefer the forms that put the tags outside of the inputs, because they are much more accessible. In addition, this layout based in

is not adequate.

dashborad - contact - edit those tags in the text field or add a new field by clicking the generate tag button - save on the very bottom of the page + CSS for styling.

Thanks all for info & tips. It has helped me in completing the assignment and learning Wordpress.

Kudo to Daisy for highlighting & helping on Coin Slider. Ron, thanks, those articles on Gallery short-code are very useful. As you mentioned above, try i did but couldn't create a gallery of pictures (with corresponding links). Ended up just inserting individual picture with proper link.

Was blending Twenty Ten for the assignment. The 2 page templates offer flexibilities.

Since i was working on localhost, uploading to the host costed me a few hours (me, slow) lesson about WP site and data backup & upload. Yes, experienced stresses as the site went haywires (multiple occasions) when the siteurl wasn't set properly during the move. Here are some articles which may be useful for those are new as me.

Hi Polly. Posted that hastily at Panera Bread without background and specifics. Trying 1 more time.

i started with Twenty Ten theme with a few photo posts with a bit of text (in this case, just where and when the pix was taken). Why TwentyTen? Have no good reason other than wanting to have the opportunity to learn how to tweak the theme.

Then i was busy to get the CoinSlider to work.

Next, gallery page. My idea is to build a gallery of thumbnails, which are actually links to the posts created. Tried using [Gallery] shortcode or add an image/gallery button. [Gallery] can only display images from the same id. So no luck. Tried to add all the used images 1 more time. Yes, that was the gallery. All the thumbnails pointed to the image files. Attempted to manually assign the links to this set of images. Not working neither even with 2 set of images uploaded. Scratched that. Ended up inserting the images, one by one, from the media library and inputing the post links. Not very smart, elegant but it did what set out to do. *** does anyone knows if there is a plugin to do that?

CoinSlider code. Had my share of scratching my head. Found out where to put it from the thread there. To add, i used the editor in WP admin Appearance panel and added the line to the Page Template.

If i need to do it again, i'd probably use a more fitting theme. Many also showed rather attractive plugins.

Hope this helps.

cheers,
dan

Thanks for the tips, Dan! Had no idea where to put that code, and I will remember it's the page template next time. I am SO unfamiliar with tweaking anything other than CSS, and I can barely do that! But I really like the looks of the coin slider, it's exactly what I had imagined I wanted.

How do you input links from a pic to a post? Would really like to know where to do that.

Polly, in my scenario (the setting as outlined), that is what i did:-

- edit Gallery page
- click "Upload/Inset" image
- select "Media Library" as the source
- "Show" the image you would like to add
- at the "Add an Image" dialog box, click the "Post URL"
- finalise thru "Insert into Post" button

Give it a try.

cheers,

Hey again guys! Amazing work everywhere. Here's my humble submission: http://jet.hostoi.com/wordpress/. Wish I really could have done more with it, but my schedule's all over the place. Had fun though!

PS: Has anyone come across a permissions issue when uploading files to WP's media library on a web host? The established "fix" is changing the perms on the wp-content/uploads directory to 0777 but I'm not very comfortable with that. Anyone else got any clues as to a proper remedy?

I'm missing something here. I emailed my assignment but it wasn't counted in the spreadsheet that just went out. The only way to post the assignment is by doing it on this forum?

Well I want my assignment counted. here's the URL of the work I did:
