Why did you take this course? What was it that seemed interesting enough to make you sign up?
Also, what would you say you hope to get out of this course? What do you hope to be able to do/be/know afterwards that you couldn't do/be/know before the course? In other words, how would you define "success" for this course?
I love music, but I don't understand it - can't hear the instruments, can't carry a tune, etc. This course sounded interesting and that it could maybe possibly bring me a little closer to understanding the how, what and why of the visceral effect.
Thanks for your thoughts, Audrey. That's a big part of what I'm hoping to uncover with everyone in this course... the how what and why of the effect music has on us. The more I explore those questions, the more ways I discover that music is a powerful tool for personal development, both intellectually and emotionally.
I want to learn composers why/how chose the specific instruments and sounds for their song. and tell the difference of similar instruments, for example I don't know brass section very well, I couldn't say if it was a tuba or french horn etc.
Selin... we'll definitely get into the first of your goals. Especially towards the end of the course as all of the 5 parts of musical speech start to come together. As far as how to identify the sound of different instruments, that just takes a lot of practice listening. But I'll be mindful of it as we go through the material.
