Class One:  Who and Where We Are

In this class, we will get to know each other and share our math stories.  Do we have any explanations for our history of relative success or lack of success in math?  Are there any specific psychological topics that the group is interested in investigating during this class?

Assignment:

  • Take the Myer-Briggs Inventory Test at TBD
  • Read the personality profile description for your MBIT type on TBD
  • Reflect on whether or not that description gives you any insight into your math experience
  • Write a short post about your MBIT type and whether or not you think it could partially explain your previous math experience at TBD

Class Two:  Personality Style:  Myer-Briggs

In this class, we will discuss the MBTI personality typology theory.  We will share MBTI types and any thoughts we have about whether or not it helps explain our experience with math.  Does it suggest any other relationships between MBIT types and math success or failure?

Assignment:

  • Take the Keirsey Temperament Test at TBD
  • Read the personality profile description for your Keirsey Temperament type on
  • Reflect on whether or not that description gives you any insight into your math experience
  • Write a short post about your Keirsey Temperament type and whether or not you think it could partially explain your previous math experience at TBD
  • Post a link to an article, research paper, blog, or other resource on this topic at  TBD

Class Three:  Brain Hemisphere

In this class, we will consider whether being left- or right-brained correlates with math success or failure.  We will discuss our own types and our ideas about brain type and math experience.

Assignment:

  • Take the Brain Hemisphere Test at
  • Read the personality profile description for your brain type on TBD
  • Reflect on whether or not that description gives you any insight into your math experience
  • Write a short post about your brain type and whether or not you think it could partially explain your previous math experience at TBD
  • Post a link to an article, research paper, blog, or other resource on this topic at TBD

Class Four:  Learning Modalities

In this class, we will look at learning modalities and see what impact they have on math success (if any).  We will discuss our own learning styles and our ideas about relationship between learning modalities and math experience.

Assignment:

  • Take the Gender Test at TBD
  • Read the description for your gender score on TBD
  • Reflect on whether or not that description gives you any insight into your math experience
  • Write a short post about your gender and whether or not you think it could partially explain your previous math experience at EBD
  • Post a link to an article, research paper, blog, or other resource on this topic at  TBD

Class Five:  Gender Differences

In this class, we will discuss our opinions about what impact gender has on math experience in the light of our test scores and the research on this subject.

Assignment:

  • Take any additional assessments suggested by class participants
  • Write a short post about your scores and whether or not you think it could partiallly explain your previous math experience at TBD
  • Write a short article about your conclusions about all the theories we have studied and whether or not they effect math success or failure

Class Six:  Other/Putting It All Together

In this class, we will analyze all the theories presented, see if there is any agreement about their impact on math success, and discuss how we can use this information to improve math learning. This is the Syllabus for your Course. Any course participant is allowed to edit this page. Be the first to edit the page by clicking on 'Edit' next to the name of the page (in the Course Material block on the left).

(Note from Carol:  I will be filling in the TBD shortly.  I am still in the process of deciding what assessment tests to use and how we should share our information with each other.  However, if others want to success additional or alternative assessments, I am open to that. But while we finalize the tests and where to store our information, I just put TBD while presenting the flow of the class.)

I probably sound really stupid asking this question, but what is TBD?

It is just an abbreviation

It is just an abbreviation for To Be Decided. It just sounds better than "I Don't Know What I'm Doing Yet" (but I'm figuring it out....)

Thanks,
Carol

I am not a math professor,

Hi Carol

Where can I view your brain hemisphere test? I'd like to compare it to the one I've used as a basis to teach math over the last 20 years.

Thank you,
Jonathan
