I've been doing software development for almost 25 years, starting out in the defense contractor world doing simulation and training software in missile launch training systems and flight simulators. In those days, we were using the Ada programming language. I also got to do some embedded software for Intel and Motorola single board computers. Those were some fun days in my software engineering career, nothing like the web development I would, unknowingly, get into later. At some point, I realized Java was hot and I wasn't doing doing Java. At the time I decided to move to Colorado, I also decided that would be the time to get into Java. Well, I made it to Colorado, but my career took a detour into C++, first working in satellite surveillance software, and then back to doing some flight simulation software before finally going to work for the Java Oracle (pun intended), Sun Microsystems. There, I worked in IT and engineering, mostly on web development (both front-end and back-end) for Sun's external-facing support web sites. These were pretty big web applications. After 8+ years working there, Sun was languishing, trying to find it's identity. Layoffs were becoming a regular thing. I think I made it through about 6 rounds of layoffs before I finally decided it was time to move on and I accepted a nice severance package, saying goodbye to a once great company. I moved on to do some contract work, again in web development, this time at a major cable television operator - still Java, with a variety of front-end and back-end work. It was interesting work, but I had other passions that were building. So, I decided to resign my position and dedicate my time to pursuing those passions. I'm now on my own and pursuing mobile application development, starting out with iPhone, but with plans to utilize my Java skills and pick up Android app development too. I am interested in both native mobile apps as well as mobile web apps utilizing HTML5, CSS3, javascript, and, of course, jQuery! When I'm not doing software development, you can usually find me riding my bike (that's bicycle, not motorcycle) somewhere here in beautiful Colorado. If you have never been to Colorado, put it on your bucket list; you won't regret it. In fact, you may decide this is the place to live, as I did just over 15 years ago when I moved here. I have no plans to leave.
