Hi again!
The plan for this second week, before we get our hands dirty installing and customizing MediaWiki, is focusing in the tool itself and its many powerful features.
So let's now consider what are its most important parts and pages, related to editing (for the vast majority of users) and also for getting useful information as admins.
:: Materials
For those of you more needed of basics, there are some nice (detailed, sometimes quiet also) videos here:
http://www.archive.org/details/LearnProgramming.tv-MediaWiki. After you download the video package, let's focus only in the first 4 ones:
The idea after that (or if you already know from your direct experience) is to use this thread for detecting the main features of MediaWiki, in the most possible detailed way...
:: Important stuff
Which are MediaWiki's most important pages and features? Where are they located? We can use Wikipedia for linking examples... Like
History pages:
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=The_Troggs&action=history (where you can find who did last changes in a page and when, and also jump to any previous version or compare them, even undo changes).
:: Tricks
Apart from the important pages and features of the tool,
as an user you can do there things like messaging people, using HTML, uploading media, etc. How do you do those things? Let's try to collect also some HowTos related to MediaWiki use and basic options.
How do you see it?
...or consider for example the real "nerve centre" of MediaWiki: SpecialPages O_O
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Special:SpecialPages
What do you think is more important or useful there. Why?
I'm also curious about how're you doing with the video tutorials in archive.org... Do you think they're useful?
Uhm, seems that this second week I didn't propose an activity interesting enough (my fault) or you're waiting to the last moment! :) Here's an example of what we should share before working in our wiki: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Special:MostRevisions This is a critical tool/page for knowing which are the most active pages we have in our wiki, where's "the action" at a glance.
More examples?
Hello Enric,
I tried to download the all videos ,but there was a problem with the source.
I noticed that the last 3 files discuss the namespace,why we need to use namespace in wiki ?
Shall we install MediaWiki this week?
Thanks,
Nada
Sorry I'm way behind... I went to download those videos the other day and when I tried to open to zip (or rar or whatever they were) my extractor said the archive was corrupt. :( So I will head back and try to download the single archives instead of the massive one.
I downloaded the videos and watched them. They're very informative.
I too had problems with the zip file but did exactly what Jared did. :-)
I as well had difficulties with the videos. Here is how I corrected:
1. The videos do not play well on Mac, so I went to my PC
2. Download .zip file, extract to local directory
3. Downloaded the recommended viewer (from http://www.videolan.org) and install
4. Via the new video player, open (Ctrl+O) individual avi's
5. All is well :)
or use the MPlayer OS X Extended http://www.mplayerosx.ch/
many thanks for the link, i prefer my stuff on mac :)
Well, we can't say this second week activity was a success :(
As someone told me by mail maybe I should have considered to focus more on installation already, since as stated in your presentations many of you are aware enough of MediaWiki uses. Well, let's focus on our own wikis from now on and see how far can we go in the following weeks.
However, for the purpose of addressing things well and with good order please use this thread if at any time you want to discuss any of MediaWiki features (special pages, editing, categories, etc).
Installing now installation activities in another message : :: ::: :::: :::::::: ;p
Enric, if it is any consolation, I did learn from the videos! I did not have a very good understanding of what the different pages in MediaWiki actually did. However, it is making more sense after the videos! Now this afternoon I will install and I'm sure it will become even more clear.
