Class 6 - Prototyping/Mock-up
Propose a new user experience design to the P2PU Webcraft platform. Use graphical tools, as Balsamiq or Mockingbirs, to do the graphical wireframes.
An important detail:
This is a real project. The ideas developed here will be presented to the P2PU project team, on a Creative Commons Attribution model.
Let's work together, I'm sure there's gonna be lots of great ideas.

WOW! Very nice assignment! How much time exactly do we have to do this? Do we have to concentrate in the whole platform or just one specific subject (e.g. how to manage your courses material)
Hello there! We're gonna have about 2 weeks (we might have 3).
Our focus will be: how to improve the experience of teaching and studying on a Webcraft course.
Our analyses will have these topics:
- Defining the basic personas that use the Webcraft platform;
- Analyze other open-source distance education platforms;
- Analyze current interface elements on P2PU's website - based on our studies about information and gestalt;
- Suggest improvements to current interface elements;
- Suggest a new layout of these elements.
Hi Joao, I was reading the topics and I don't want to be a party killer, but I think that maybe it is too much to do for 1 or 2 weeks.
When you say "Our focus will be: how to improve the experience of teaching and studying on a Webcraft course." are you talking about the process from sign-up process, creating a course, sharing material, comments, creating assignments, creating/editing a profile,etc?
Can we focus on maybe one or two features? For example, creating a course, uploading assignments and/or material.(?)
What do you think?
Suggestion: let's broaden the scope to both open and proprietary VLEs.
Neat assignment!
Sorry I've been away from the course this past weekend.
I can't wait to see what develops next!
Hey there, Tracy! Nice to have you around.
That's the advantage of asynchronous education! :)
Shall we start?
FIRST PHASE
- Define the basic personas that use the Webcraft platform
Who do you guys think could be our Personas?
Hi everybody, sorry for the delay. Is it comfortable for you to keep using Etherpad for this assignment? I made one http://pads.dreamfish.com/3QKK6SCacu but we could work here too :)
Sure, let's use Etherpad. I'll also suggest to the group a chat session this Saturday.
Both Etherpad and group chat sound like an excellent idea to me!
I have a question about personas. One of the designers in Objectified talks about design for people who are on the extremes of possible users, and how then the middle takes care of itself. What do you guys think? Should we create personas that are like the most common, typical P2PU user, or ones that are that near the fringe in some way?
I think that Personas don't necessary have to be opposite extremes (although it can be helpful in some cases), but they do need to have differentiators between them.
From usability.gov:
A persona is a fictional person who represents a major user group for your site/product. You select the characteristics that are most representative of those groups and turn them into a persona.
So I think that you can't satisfy everybody, so yo need to do the personas based on research and you need to design in order to achieve their goals and their goals need to be useful for your design.
From Microsoft Research paper:
http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/um/people/jgrudin/publications/perso...
"Personas focus attention on a specific target audience. The method helps establish who is and
consequently who is not being designed for. Personas explicitly do not cover every conceivable user.
Here is another example of personas with differentiators:
A frequent business traveller would be a tempting target for the design of an in-flight entertainment system. However, this user would be familiar with both flying and computer use. By designing for the business traveller, the retired bricklayer going on holiday may not be able to use the system; yet it is possible to satisfy both personas by designing for the bricklayer, and then assessing the design using the business traveller.
What do you guys/girls think?
I envision that, on the specific case of P2PU, we have two basic personas:
1) Course organizers - which are people that understand well about specific areas of technology, and would like to share their knowledge.
2) Course students - which are people that would like to know more about specific areas of technology.
Being clear, the complexity of users in this environment is low, as most of them are used to virtual interfaces.
Our challenge is, then, to optimize these 2 processes:
- DISTRIBUTING KNOWLEDGE
- RECEIVING KNOWLEDGE
The desired outcome of that is:
- SHARING KNOWLEDGE.
As we've discussed, it's up to the designer to choose the level of detais he wants to apply to the Personas study. I personally think that, when it's possible, to sinthetyse is the beauty of design.
2) Analyze other distance education platforms:
These are some popular knowledge management systems, as indicated by Wikipedia:
Moodle http://moodle.org/
An open source (free) modular php virtual learning sofware
Blackboard http://www.blackboard.com/
A family of virtual learning software
FirstClass http://www.firstclass.com/
Messaging and communications solution
Heritage Key http://www.heritage-key.com
Virtual historical environments, such as Tutankhamun’s tomb.
it's Learning http://www.itslearning.eu/
Norwegian Closed Source System (written in ASP.NET)
Mingoville http://www.mingoville.com/pt.html
Introduction to the English language. Age 8 to 12 (Virtual World and Language games)
I have here an online course in moodle (so we can analyze it) http://docencia.etsit.urjc.es/moodle/course/view.php?id=82
And here is another learning platform for languages. http://www.livemocha.com/ (great one!)
:)
Livemocha is really an excellent example!
