My name is Erich Smith and I am in the mist of developing a "blended" classroom for adult learners with the end goal of turning motivated ABE (Adult Basic Ed) learners into motivated online learners (to expand their horizons; see the viability in online courses, certificates, and degrees; non-degree focused continuing education/life-long learning options).

This course I believe will entice me to "lower my guard" and develop openness around ideas shared by others via their own experiences.  I believe this will lead to crucial input . . . not only with lesson planning . . . but classroom application of concepts and ideas found behind every lesson plan.

When I took the course last quarter, I found some direct prompting from Charlie very helpful! I'm noticing with the courses I'm running that some participants are more interested in participating than others. What are some of your techniques for motivating the people *you* teach? More ideas could be very helpful for me, since direct messages may not work unless people have a degree of "buy in" about the course idea. So, specifically, I'm interested in "motivation at the outset" -- which certainly has something to do with the course design. Any ideas from your experience?

I think Joe gave you some good questions to get going Erich. Another way of looking at the same issue is, what reasons do ABEs not become motivated online learners?

Erich: I like your statement "lower my guard". It hope the course does that for you. Dr. King

Finding the 'buy in' can be very difficult. I guess you just have to make sure that the course is geared towards what the ABE's want to learn, and not always just what they have to learn. Making it relevant--that's always the magic phrase in education, isn't it?

Celaina: You stated very nicely 2 of the principles of adult learning theory (Knowles). I used his theory in my classes. Thanks for the comment. Dr. King
