I was a little late finding out about p2pu.org, so I simply hope that there are still seats available. If I learn even the very basics of Java and/or Processing, I'll be happy. I'm also excited that Processing is apparently OO. I've worked with some basic javascript and PHP, but only procedural style so far. Processing seems like it will be an interesting way to introduce some of the concepts.

Just to confirm, the course does start on the 15th, correct? So, "week 1" in the syllabus is next week?

Hi Ricardo, had a a basic question. Sorry for asking it here but couldn't find any info on this anywhere

Is there a notification that we receive on signup? The reason I'm asking is because I did signup (and fill in the form) but I did not get any confirmation and I still see that the sign-up link is active for me.

Thanks,
Sagar

I think that once we're registered, we see the "Creative Programming 2010" course when we scroll over the "My Courses" tab on top of the page.

I didn't receive a confirmation either, but I'm pretty sure I'm registered.
Do you see anything when you scroll over "My Courses," Sagar?

Hi Everyone. I thought I would put in my comment.

Likewise, I've submitted a registration request, but have not received a confirmation notice. I do see "Creative Programming 2010" in the "My Courses" tab.

Hope this works out and I'm looking forward to learning with you all.

Hello fellow coursemates,

I too have yet to receive confirmation of registration. Although "Creative Programming 2010" is listed under My Courses in the drop down tab, when I look under My Account, Creative Programming 2010 is still listed under "Courses Applied For" ... suggesting I'm still in limbo.

If I am accepted, I look forward to learning with all of you!

Good morning everyone!

Aside from the same question as everyone else regarding the registration, I'm wondering about something else which I've not been able to find on the site...

Class times...? I'm still a little confused about how 'classes' will be 'presented' or whether it's more of a guided self-study course with a lot of interaction between students and lecturer.

But - if there are going to be class sessions, when will these be? I'm fairly certain we're all scattered over many different time zones, so it would probably be rather tricky to get us all to attend the same sessions. I'd really appreciate it if someone could clarify this for me (or just direct me to the bit that I didn't read yet :) )

Thanks! Looking forward to it!

Hi Henriel, thanks for asking and apologies for the delays. Addressing your specific questions: This online course is designed to be flexible and it allows you to work on your own time. Just try to keep the weekly pace and meet the deadlines. There are no fixed class times, mostly asynchronous activities and only a couple of online synchronous meetings, everyone is encouraged to attend but there will be ways to share what is shared in these sessions too.

Any news yet? Anyone?

I'm starting to wonder whether this course is actually going to run, since the main course page claims that registration closed on the 8th of September, classes start on the 15th of September and that all successful applicants would be informed of their acceptance by the 8th of September.

It is now two days before the course is set to commence and it seems it is still 'Open for Registration'...

Has anyone heard anything?

Hello fellow coursemates,
i think the indication that you are enrolled in the course will be the listing of that corresponding course under 'current courses' in ur account details page.hope everyone finds this useful.

Hang in there! In my experience, online courses don't run as smoothly as a face to face course. Right now we expect the course instructor to exercise control and tell us what to do.

But, perhaps, in the spirit of open source philosophy of the P2PU, we should simply carry on with the work and ask questions as we need. We have this channel to communicate. We all have a desire to learn processing.js.

Let's simply begin. If you are reading this, then you are enrolled in the course.

Cheers,
newman

Just a quick update on this course. We are experiencing a very unpleasant problem with our spam filter that essentially prevents Ricardo from posting comments into the forum of his own course. We are working on it and hope to get it resolved very soon, but I wanted to ask everyone to please bear with us for a little longer. This is absolutely not Ricardo's fault, and he has been anxious to get in touch with the group.

Further update - I have checked the sign-ups and as far as I can see everyone posting here has been approved to participate in the course.

Dear all, I'm so sorry for the delay. Please bear with us. It has been a highly frustrating process in the last few days involving people in three countries until the system admins found out that I couldn't post any messages in p2pu.org due to a glitch in the server's spam filters. I have a lot of catch up to do.

First of all, thank you for your interest. We had a total of 35 applications for this course. After carefully reviewing all of them, nine applications were rejected mainly due to two reasons:

1. Insufficient time allocation. Based on previous experiences, I think that at least 10 hours per week are necessary to follow the assignments and to explore the code and help others. Accepting people who can't commit enough time would slow down the group.

2. Not the main intended target. Again, opening the course to a wide range of proficiency in programming would most likely result in chaos. For this particular course I want to focus on people with none to little experience in programming, but probably in the future we could open an intermediate-level (and even an advanced) course on Processing. Integration with Arduino seems like a nice way to go next year. Also, some applicants are seeking more "information design" oriented courses (including me!), which would be nice to see in the future here in p2pu.org

The following people have been accepted:
adam wiesehan
Brylie Oxley
Michelle Church
Amanda Harris
John Alexander
EJ Fox
gobi nath
Gonzalo León
joel harlander
Leonardo Vargas
Lucia salamanca
Matthew Koop-Pearce
Regan McClure
Sagar Shankar
Siva Edupu
Amanda Ervin
kevin burress

The following applicants have been accepted with reservations, I need your input to confirm your enrolment. Please confirm that you can put at least 10 hours of work per week:
Benay gursoy
Chris McConnell
Miguel Inclan
Newman Lanier
Henriel Veldtmann

Finally, Emmanuel Joseph and Nitjyot would be welcome to the course, but I ask you to please check the course's objectives to confirm that they fit your expectations.

Hi Ricardo,

Great to hear everything is still on :) Will the schedule still be the same as originally planned with the 15th of September being the first class date?

As far as the 10 hours a week goes - if time over weekends is included in this as well, I'll be able to do it (I'll just have to cancel some regular weekend arrangements which I've actually wanted to get out of for a while...).

So yes, if that's all good with you, I'll commit to the 10 hours a week, weekends included. This course sounds really interesting and finally seems like the kind of thing I've been hoping for for quite some time now.

Just a last point - I see that for some weeks there are 'synchronous meetings' scheduled. I'm just curious as to how this will work, since I expect we are all scattered over many different time zones. Is tomorrow's synchronous meeting still on the chart, and if so, what time (and timezone) do you expect to hold it?

Really looking forward to learning from all of you!

Hi Henriel, I will adjust the course calendar as I first didn't know that p2pu's weeks start on Wednesday, but it actually makes complete sense just as you mention because this allows people to work on weekends.

Thank you for committing to the time demands, I hope that you find it worthwhile.

The first synchronous meeting will take place on Thursday next week (23 Sept) from 18:00 to 19:30 CDT. I have added the following link to 'translate' this into different time zones, I will also share in the next days instructions for this meeting.

Dear Sosa,
Hi!
Although I have written that I can reserve 6h/week, I can put at least 10 h/week to this course as expected. I really want to attend this course.
Thank you for your notification and reservation of the place.

I'm curious to know what Ricardo and other students think about the idea of setting up a wiki for this course. The forums on p2pu are OK but a bit awkward. I'm thinking about the logistics of one of our first assignments where we are expected to read and respond to each others short essays... how will we be sharing these essays, and more importantly how will be able to share other important information we come across such as web links, online tutorials, interesting examples of our own and others work, etc.

kevin burress's picture

Wed, 2010-09-15 23:11

That's a good question. Where ARE we supposed to submit the essay when we finish? I was just going to start a new thread, and name it "Week 1 Assignment 1: Essay Name by My Name" and assume everyone else was going to do the same. I'm not opposed to a wiki. The format is versatile and you can have discussion threads for each wiki topic, which is nice. If we were to do that, I would think something like Topic: Week_1_Assignment_1 and everyone posts their essay under a different section of the topic. I also have another thing I'm going to try and test later today. In Ubuntu Synaptic (Universe) there is a module that spawns a virtual Ubuntu instance within Amazon's EC2 with selected modules. There's a way to make one and share the instance live with other people via applications like TinyVNC for creative projects/collaborations.

Now that I think about it, perhaps the simplest solution would be to go with something like Google Groups. Google Groups has a simple interface and is intuitive and easy to pick up for those who might be unfamiliar. It allows members to have discussions, and share documents. Simple.

Fellow classmates, for an idea of what I'm getting at, take a look at the following Google Group for P2PU's School of Webcraft: http://groups.google.com/group/p2pu-webcraft

Is this something that we might find useful?

Dear Kevin and Matt, thank you for your suggestions. There are naturally a hundred ways to do this and we will indeed be using different communication means depending on the type and degree of collaboration during the course. I understand your concerns about the forums, but for this week I'd really like to adhere to the K.I.S.S. principle, so if all/most participants agree, I suggest that we stick to the Forum plan this first week.

I have created a new forum called "Week 1: The power of creative code" and here is how I suggest that we proceed (aiming for a trade-off between simplicity and functionality):

- As every participant finishes writing their essays, they post a unique entry to the forum with their text (600 to 800 words to keep it feasible). I highly recommend writing all your text somewhere else than the browser's window and keep a local copy in your computer/cloud space.
- As more entries are posted, participants hit the "Reply" button of an entry they'd like to comment/challenge/clarify/etc. Every participant comments on at least two entries, so we end up with a nice 'tree' of ideas. I will be facilitating the discussion and highlighting the main lines of discussion.

There's a file repository somewhere I think. I know that I saw something like that when attaching a file in one of the course sign ups. But, I can't find any link to it.

There's this:
http://wiki.p2pu.org/browse/#view=ViewAllObjects

But, it appears that it might be for the previous p2pu site. I tried to log in, but my details don't work there.

A lot to think about in the reading but no definite place to post it. Instructor Sosa, what is your advice on where to place our materials so that we can peer review each other?

Also, I could have been mistaken, but I thought there was supposed to be a synchronous chat tonight of some sort but I didn't see a method of any sort posted...

This is just some of my thoughts on the syllibus:

Assigments:

- Thursday deadline: submit an 800-word individual essay based on the three readings suggested where the link between computers & creativity is explored.

>>I'm glad it says "Thursday" cause I could have today, I don't feel very good (I've had a cold I'm recovering from)

- Monday deadline: every student writes a three-paragraph review of two essays from their peers.

>> Looking forward to it. Peer review is always a good idea.

Meeting times: An introductory synchronous meeting takes place to discuss the main ideas of this first activity.

>>It doesn't say when, just that it will be sometime this week.

>>IRCop get. Does anyone use the chat?

we can also use dropbox to share the assignments and supplementary readings if everybody agrees.
we used it previously in a class in the university and it works pretty well.

Hello!

Is better late than never :). So I join the course expecting to gain some skills in programming/graphics. I already know some programming, but I'm not professional.

See you!
