Who is still interested?

Go back to: General discussion

It seems that at least several other people besides myself are interested in continuing the course even though Ricardo had to withdraw as organizer.  EJ Fox had a great idea to have a roll call to see who's still interested and how we can proceed.

So, anybody that's still interested, could you post here and sort of restate your experience level and what you hoped to get out of the course?

1.  Any prior programming experience?

2.  Any prior experience with Processing?

3.  Any experience or interest in helping to organize something like this?

4.  What did you hope to get out of this course?

5.  Any other thoughts or ideas?

Thanks.

I'll start.

I have some very minimal programming experience. I had never done much more than design (HTML/CSS) until this summer. But, I recently began learning PHP and javascript. I know some of the basics like data types, control structures (if/else, loops). But, like I said, it's minimal experience so far.

I hadn't tried Processing until these courses started. But, I'm taking the other course focusing on the javascript port of Processing and have played around with it a bit so far.

Unlike some of you, I have no experience teaching or organizing this kind of thing. So, I'm hoping that some of you can step up and help in that regard.

I know some of you are probably interested in learning this stuff for something specific like data visualization, or creating games, but I'm not so picky. I'm more interested in just learning whatever I can and using Processing to further my understanding of programming concepts in general.

Hi, I'm definitely still interested. To be honest, I'm not going to restate my reasons and background for joining this course. I've already taken the time to do this. I would really just like to get going on the assignments. I think we're already 2 days behind on the second assignment.

Everything we need to continue is in place: the assignments are posted, we have all been admitted to the course and can access the forums and chats. Let's please not turn this into a massive exercise in self organization.

Fair enough, I'm certainly not trying to require anybody to do anything...it's completely optional. EJ suggested a roll call to see who's still in, and I'm just trying to get the ball rolling. And as he pointed out, when we detailed our experience level previously, it was part of the application and not public.

As for the self-organization point, I can definitely understand that and agree that we don't need to go too far with it. But, we do need to figure some things out. We don't have Ricardo's presentations (whatever they were going to be) or the exercise files for week 3 and onward (it looks like they are there, but the links don't go anywhere). So, as far as learning Processing, we may be on our own. And, without some idea of what we're going to do for those weeks, what would be the point?

But, yeah, we can at least get moving with the ContextFree portion.

I am still interested.

I have been studying Python, PHP, Ruby, and, more recently, JavaScript. I am still a novice.

I'm also definitely still interested :)

I have a bit of programming experience in various languages, but absolutely none in Java, I'm afraid. Also, the field that this course covers is something I've never worked in, so I highly doubt that I'll be able to help much.

Just lastly - I am a bit confused as to what week we're actually supposed to be in now, with the course having started late and the initial assignment dates being moved. Where are we now and when are the next assignments due?

It might be helpful for you all to organize meetings using chat (or video). That way you can have real time each week to speak with eachother about how things are going. Here's some advice on how to do that: http://wiki.p2pu.org/synchronous-meetings

Hey - it's never too late. Just so you know, however, the organizer has passed the course on to the participants.

Please send a note to alison {@}gmail.com with you request. I will add you manually.

I would love to be part of this but haven't been admitted into the course. Any way I can do this?
