Introductions

Go back to: General discussion

Hi everyone

I thought I'd kick off the introductions by letting you all know a little bit about me, and my role in this course.
My name is Rebecca Kahn, and I've been working with P2PU since it began just over a year ago. I've run one course at P2PU (an Introduction to Cyberpunk Literature) and been a participant in another (Kitchen Science). I think the most important role for a course co-ordinator at P2PU is to be a facilitator. P2PU is all about learning from (and with) each other, and I don't think that the traditional methods of "teaching" and "learning" apply in this context. I suspect that I will learn a great deal from all of you. So I am here to facilitate discussions, help with logistics and be available to answer any questions, but I am certainly not hear to "teach".

In terms of my experience in the subject - I've been working as a freelance journalist in Johannesburg, South Africa for about 4 years, and recently finished an MA in Journalism. I've written for a variety of magazines and newspapers, but I have very little experience in the digital field, so I'm excited to see what comes out of this course.

Hello! My name is Philipp and I play a somewhat unusual role in this course. I am not really a facilitator, and not really a participant, but I'll be helping with everything that needs helping and plan to enjoy myself in the process. I run P2PU.org and we are very excited about this course, because it's our first foray into combining students enrolled at an institution with the open web community. I'll also be joining Bekka during the course office hours. I am not a journalist, but I have noticed that traditional media organizations, governments, independent journalists, and everyday citizens are increasingly using similar tools to record and share what is happening around the world. I don't really understand the long-term implications of this change, but find it exciting to observe how technology enables broader and more diverse participation.

You sir, are at the helm of a wonder-world about to give birth to a collective consciousness! I love the concept of this web-ship you are directing. 'It's power to the individual' however meagre and minuscule, but it's power non the less. Let no one be left unheard. Ok sorry for the big thoughts it's anti 'Miller Chop"(Covering the cops). So going by the first article we were prodded to read (covering the cops) "Philipp started something, it turned out big. Very big."(Classic Edna lead!)

Hi,
I'm Nadhir, a Tunisian IT Engineer, 11 years of exp. between Web development, system administration, management IT projects and online marketing.
I held senior positions in multinationals recently as CIO of the first and only English-speaking University in Tunisia (South Mediterranean University, partner of the University of Maryland, USA).
Since 2007, I started to work as a freelance ICT consultant.
Passionate about education and training, I founded in November 2009: www.e-taalim.com , the first e-Magazine on e-Learning and Blended Learning for executives, professionals and students in Africa and the Arab World.

I was very happy when I knew about this course and the P2PU initiative and I posted an article about this project on my blog.
The fact that this course is online and free is highly important for me. As a start up leader, I do not have time and resources to take other type of courses.
I'm very keen to be part of this course as this experience will enable me to be part of an international team and share with them my experience.
As a self learner, I'm sure that this will be an imoprtant step in my professional development.

As you see, I'm new to the media field and very curious to learn about it ...

I'm 36, married and father of a charming boy, Taha, 3.

[Updated with motivation]

Hi all,

I'm Gueorgui, 28. I was born in Moscow, Russia; lived in Paris, France most of my life and recently moved to Berlin, Germany.

My education background is in IT, and I make most of my living as a Web designer and developer. Currently, I'm a co-founder at LocalRepublic (http://localrepublic.com), a Web startup aiming to help people get together to solve local community issues and improve living standards.

Besides the Web, I'm passionate about photography and photographic storytelling. You can see some of my work on my long-neglected website, http://gueorgui.net, as well as on my flickr account (http://flickr.com/photos/spacelion).

I feel the main benefit of my participating in this course would help me learn to better get my stories across. As a "photographic storyteller" and having no journalistic training, my main struggle is always to present my stories in such a way that impact my intended audience. I have found the hard way that getting a story published on a physical media is incredibly difficult, and that I don't have the tools and knowledge to effectively publish online. I'm hoping this course will help me in that respect. I am also very much looking forward to working in collaboration on an international journalism project — a first for me, and very exciting.

I'm hoping to learn much more about media, journalism and especially building a story for publication, and I'm very much looking forward to working with all of you for this course.

Hi I'm Gary

I'm 24, unemployed, and live at home with my folks in Johannesburg, South Africa.

I have a BA from the University of Johannesburg (majors in law and psychology) and a general business degree from TUKS. I worked in a book store for 3 years, full-time and part-time.

My experience in communications is pretty limited. At business school we worked with e-mail in our syndicates but it was pretty nightmarish. I've never participated in a wiki or message board, I've never been on Twitter, heck I'm not even on Facebook anymore.

Even though the way we used e-mail was ineffectual I discovered that contributing to a team was far more rewarding than any of my solo studies. That my work was judged by my peers rather than a faceless examiner was a great motivator (for me anyway).

My main reasons for taking this course are to learn how to collaborate more effectively and to meet interesting people.

My passions are writing, walking, singing, dancing and watching film

Hi, I'm Mike Caulfield, from Keene NH, USA, and a bit of a late add.

I have two interests in this course. The first is that I'm currently an Instructional Designer for a state college, and I am curious to see how this model works. I've been a proponent of open education for many years, but admit there are still questions as to how it might work in practice. I'm hoping my experience here might help answer that.

The second interest I have is that in my political life I was one of the early political bloggers doing research on particular state-level issues and reporting that out. I was actually one of the first bloggers to get credentialed for covering party events (and that first event I recieved credentials to was Obama kicking off his campaign in 2006 in New Hampshire). I developed during the course of that a fairly cynical view of traditional political reporting -- but admit there's an awful lot of issues with current citizen journalism as well. I'm excited to get an informed set of views from the guides and my peers here -- hopefully make me less cynical and more effective...excited to be here!

Hi all,

my name is John Weitzmann and I'm a lawyer, mainly based in Berlin, Germany. My professional focus is intellectual property law, but - contrary to what many others in the field do - on the open access side of things. One of my homebases for this is the german CC jurisdiction project of which I've been the legal lead for some years now, but I also do freelance consulting around OA.

In this course I want to learn some basics and techniques of online journalism, also because I joined the editorial board of iRights.info lately and have done traditional radio with federal broadcasters in Germany. I guess, to actually learn something about this field of journalism is better than trial and error.

My only other experience with online courses dates back to 1999, when the first "online seminar" was offered at my uni. It was a big thing at the time, being the first course of its kind in a german law faculty, and was also a big test run for online collaboration. Our course here, however, is the real thing compared to the old days, when participants were actually all living in the same city. So, let's see how P2PU works out ...

Hi all

My name is Richard Smart, a freelance journalist based in Tokyo. I originally specialized in the nightlife scene here, but am finding more and more now that I am getting drawn to stories on political issues Japan faces and stories about Japanese society as a whole, whether they involve current trends, legal problems, crime politics... whatever.

My reasons for taking an interest in this course is that as a nation, Japan is heading more and more online. There are now online English Web sites (I always write in English - that's difficult enought without trying to write in other languages!) such as CNNGo, Time Out, WSJ and a number of Japan Times blogs operating out of Tokyo. It seems that the trend toward online journalism in Japan is gaining momentum.

On top of this, I have noticed that when I tweet or add to Facebook links to work I have done it often gets a response from people that may otherwise not have read those particular stories. This seems to point to trends in the industry that journalists will have to keep up with to stay ahead.

My use of Twitter and Facebook over the last two years seems to be the tip of a very deep iceberg.

I studied Humanities at university, specializing in the history of Western philosophy, origins of racism and contemporary relevance (a decade ago) of nineteenth century economics. In my spare time now, I am an avid reader, husband and a part-time DJ.

I look forward to working with you all in the coming weeks.

Hi,

I'm Nicolle. I grew up in Toronto, but have lived in Montreal, Aarhus (Denmark) and I'm now living in London. My BA was journalism and I'm now living in London after moving here to do my MA in Culture Industry. I work at the British Council, a NGO that focuses on the encouragement of international relations in a cultural context. I'm managing one of our websites.

When I lived in Toronto, I worked in TV for many years, writing for the websites of national broadcasters. I still freelance for a woman's network there called Slice: http://slice.ca.

I worked in entertainment for most of my career, but over the past two years, I've been focusing on culture. I joined the course because I feel the need to be professionally updated and it's difficult when you're on your own. I also think Joi's work (hi Joi!) is very interesting and focused on CC a lot in my dissertation.

I'm currently working on launching an online magazine about Culture around the world and I'm hoping it will be a truly international-run publication. I have people working in Edinburgh, London, Toronto, Mumbai and the US and I'd like to focus on it as my project for the class. I'm definitely hoping that if anyone here is interested, they will contribute.

That's a lot about me! Check my profile for my portfolio if you're interested. And catch me on twitter: @nikkerized.

Really looking forward to learning more about the digital medium!

I am 21 years old.

I am the administrator of some blogs (in Spanish, I´m sorry):

http://alumnosurjcvicalvaro.blogspot.com - About news in relation with my university focused to the students.

I have directed some short films, I have been "co-teacher" of a course about the short films production, dedicated to children (12-14 years) and, although I have not a good video camera yet, I am thinking to film a documentary for the next years about the developement of the agriculture in my town: Monsanto already is here ;)

Mmmm... You already will have to discover that I don´t speak English... xD

I am interested in the diffusion of information digital tools in general: video and audio streaming, maps, computer graphics, social networks... I just want to know enough to implement my ideas in future. If I learn enough, my mind will not have limits.

Hi everyone!

I know I am about four days too late - it's already June 8th and the course started June 4th. And I'm not very good with introductions.

So, I'm just gonna do my best here.

I'm 18, from the Philippines and this will be my first course here at P2PU. I've been here quite a while but the first round wasn't good for me - to mean, I wasn't able to enroll. It was a matter of timing - bad timing that is. And I was very interested in joining the first round.

Anyway, I was a university student until the semester before the last one, but due to financial issues, I had to stop. So, now I have to do self-study.

I'm mostly a computer person - learning how to program and design and develop web pages and stuff like that. But mostly, I try to learn how to code because of games design.

I've been interested in journalism since I realized that journalism can do a lot - it can even change the world.

I've never had a formal course on journalism and I am very excited to learn a lot here from all of you guys.

Thanks,
MJ

So here I am ready to learn how to share information, understand the process behind it and see how the frontier between physical and digital worlds is removed.

I've never came across to so many interesting backgrounds at once and I really look forward working with you all.

Hi, I'm Laurian Gridinoc and I'm a "quick learning generalist." I'm originally from Romania, I'm a medical doctor turned to interactive media (mostly web design and dev); then I did a master in computational linguistics (natural language processing) and moved to Knowledge Media Institute (The Open University, UK) to do research on semantic web (mostly towards semantic browsing). I'm also the current tutor in the P2PU Cyberpunk course.

I see the online journalism as being the one of the only forms of delivering ideas, making arguments, etc. as opposed to the other online content which is driven by questionable marketing departments. (I'm not clear here, I know.)

I'm interested not only in proper engaging content, but in how to create a context for a specific piece of content, from proper interlinks to actually relevant sources (that support arguments) rather than links by topic and more. My research at KMi was about semantic links and semantic navigation, I would like to explore what does it mean to have a "meta" narrative that spreads over a set of articles.

I doubt that the current "paper" journalism crisis will be solved by the iPad; things have to change, more than a change of delivery medium. I'm interested in how to create engagement with readers and how to collaboratively work with your readers, along the ideas (and more) from informationarchitects.jp

I can say it's not all about the "current 'paper' journalism" crisis. There is also an emerging crisis of journalism going for what is more marketable and not what is more important.

And, yes, I can agree with "things have to change, more than a change of delivery medium" as it seems to me as though the delivery medium changes faster and good journalism is lagging behind...

Hi Folks,

Carrie, here, currently writing from Ann Arbor, MI, USA.

I'm a graduate student at the University of Michigan School of Information focusing on... well, at the moment, my focus is on figuring out how to drop out while maintaining access to the few useful resources the university provides, namely, a group of semi-interesting/ed students. The interests I contribute in exchange primarily revolve around the concepts of Open Process (more on that in my project proposal), although, when it comes to journalism, I have to admit to a very strong, as-of-yet untapped desire to build out some of the connections I see - want to see? - between post-feminism and openness.

I'm also highly motivated by all the recent activity involving actual implementations of new education models. As a lifelong "student" (thank you for not using that word in this class!), I've pretty much always found myself burdened with daydreams of happy, fluffy, self-directed learning systems, beginning with middle school journal entries that spelled out the detailed operations of internet-based (pre-web) schools. Thus, I'm totally stoked to finally take part in one of the most reasonable new approaches to education I've ever seen. I've been following P2PU for over a year, and I think this class with Joi is the perfect opportunity to participate in it.

I'm really inspired by all the introductions here. I've never participated in anything so truly global, and I think this setting will prove excellent for getting the project I envision underway. Thank you all so very much for being here!

We've decided to use the forums here as the central place for posting information instead of a group blog like last year. We're having some workflow issues causing delays in getting some blog accounts open as well. Please post the answers to the following questions here in addition to your introductions or post on your personal or class blog and post a link to it here.

# Written a blog post about your personal motivation to join the course.
# Written a blog post as a group about your project, and a self-introduction
post on the group blog.

Hi all,

I’m amplifying my original post to include motivation and a little more self-introduction, since I’m a class participant now and not just a lurker.

I’ve been a newspaper journalist for 20-something years, mostly in Charlotte, N.C., about halfway between Atlanta and DC on the East Coast of the U.S. I have focused mostly on local journalism and visuals, with special assignments helping to customize the proprietary content management system, CCI from Aarhus, Denmark.

My first experience with online learning was in fall 2007, in a distance class from the University of North Carolina, using Blackboard. It was the first of four classes I took for the certificate in technology and communications offered by the journalism school.

I had Debashish Aikat for two of those classes, and I’d recommend him as an adviser to any efforts here, because he was clear, direct, repetitive and succinct in the rules for postings and assignments.

I recently took some online sessions from the University of Southern California’s business school in preparation for the Knight Digital Media Center’s News Entrepreneur Bootcamp in L.A. They used Sharepoint (OMGoodness, what a mess.) But they had it linked nicely with proprietary video software that worked with only a few glitches and added lots to the classes.

I’ve made a proposal to the Knight News Challenge for a small project, based in Charlotte, to use online classes to link experienced journalists with new “citizen journalists.” I might find out this month whether the grant is approved.
You can read about it here: http://260open.posterous.com/

And that’s my motivation for this class: I want to see what other tools are being used and how classes are conducted. I had no idea anyone else was doing this sort of work when I made the proposal way back in December or so.

I haven’t figured out whether that proposal would grow into a nonprofit or a for-profit model. I’d like to find a way to pay other experienced colleagues for teaching others, who then can increase the amount of news coverage in communities.

I was laid off in April 2009, but rehired in March 2010, so I have a day job again at The Charlotte Observer. It might not last forever. I don’t know how I will juggle it with the grant if it comes through, or whether and how I would launch the endeavor without the grant.

I learned in that year away from a traditional news organization that journalism’s future depends on individuals being persistent, creative, flexible, entrepreneurial, collaborative and full of hustle.

I’m open to ideas, and I love watching what P2PU is doing.

On my class project: I’ve proposed a personal project, on the fringes of visual journalism, and I’m seeking ideas and contributions and an editor. You can see it in the proper forum thread (being able to link would be awesome). Because I’m juggling the day job and other stuff, most of the work would need to be asynchronous, which to me is one of the huge benefits of online learning and working.

I look forward to studying with y’all.
