For our reference, here's the letter:

Hi there,

I want to build a website for the History of Music class I am teaching at the local high school. I would like to post all of the course material for the class on the website, but I don’t know what I’m allowed to use. I want to include some books, news articles, scholarly papers, musical scores, and music recordings. How can I figure out what I can and can’t use?

Thanks,

Henry McGee

So that means we need to focus on books, news articles, scholarly papers, musical scores, and music recordings. According to the assignment description, we need to cover the following:

* which materials are and are not protected by copyright
* fair use or other exceptions to copyright
* openly licensed materials

Taken together, that seems like it suggests a decent structure for our response.

1. Basics
a. brief intro
b. what's in the public domain, date etc
2. fair use as applied to:
a. books,
b. news articles,
c. scholarly papers,
d. musical scores,
e. music recordings
3. Open Content
a. intro
b. sources for specific material types

Does that seem reasonable ?

Logan
