Web Design Resources and Tools I Use
http://elementiks.com/web_resources.php

I'm a web developer and every single project calls for multiple visits to this page. It's useful from beginning to end as it covers design, development, and marketing.

My experience comes in the open source area and I have worked with a number of open source CMS applications. For sites that are more blog like and fairly simple I have used Wordpress. For sites a bit more complex and more in the vein of a multi-user CMS Joomla is a great tool. If you want to build very complex and scalable sites with lots of options including very granular user permissions I would recommend Drupal.

For folks who want might be a little less technical and want something that's easy for anyone to use, I like Wordpress as a content management system (CMS). You can easily build web sites that look professional with this.

I think a key to a good web site for a small enterprise is being able to easily modify your own content ON YOUR OWN. Dynamic content is the key to a good web site (for marketing purposes) and if you have to get an outside contractor (or sometimes even your own IT people) to make changes, you're behind the game.

I so agree. Have learned this the hard way - hired our web developer to develop sites, then have to continue to pay for administration of it...so now I am taking weekly lessons from him on drupal (2 of the 3 sites are drupal, the other is wp). It is a lot of fun, actually - I plan ahead with what I want to change that I can't figure out on my own, then he talks me through it while I do it - we talk by Skype and I record every session so if I forget, I can go back and listen again. there's a cool Skype call recorder app for that: http://www.ecamm.com/mac/callrecorder

That's great. You can also get help from folks online with stuff like this. Once you take the step of taking your web site over yourself, you'll be glad you did. :)

I use HubSpot's many "graders" to determine where I need to improve my SEO, content and other things. I find it somewhat easier to use than Google as it explains things more thoroughly. Here is the link to Website Grader: http://websitegrader.com You can take a look at the other graders they have to offer from this location. You can grade your blog, your Facebook personal profile and Fan Page, and Twitter. I think they have a LinkedIn grader as well. It's a great tool in telling you where you are as compared to where you should be.

Some resources I'm getting familiar with:
Market Analysis - has lots of good info to develop keywords, learn about competitors: http://www.marketsamurai.com/
ScribeSEO - a tool for evaluating existing websites, guidance to increase SEO, seems to have a good ethic: http://scribeseo.com/
Alexa: http://www.alexa.com/
This site has been helping me develop a sense of the niche I am working in, what my competitors are up to...
