Why we're studying Linux; space for personal accounts of our reasonings for joining this course.

Go back to: General discussion

Having had a look at the course structure document, it seems like a great idea to share why we're here. (http://wiki.p2pu.org/w/page/30783467/course-structure) From these accounts it will be easier for us to set our learning objectives.

I'll start.

My name is Dan Hassan and this is the third Linux course that I will be attending. I decided to start learning 'programming' in December after going to an event in Bradford called HacktionLab (http://hacktivista.net/hacktionlab/index.php/Autumn_2010_Hacklab). A project I had been working on was having issues with it's website (www.threadme.co.uk). We were going to be charged to have the issue fixed. I decided to go to HackLab and see if I could learn how to fix it myself. The event was amazing and there were a few people who ran a workshop on another project called Indymedia (http://london.indymedia.org/) on Hyperactive - a Ruby on Rails application. threadme is also a RoR application, so I came away enthused and determined to learn Ruby!

I got home and didn't know where to start. My background was in printing, bike mechanics and food growing.

In January after some failed attempts at trying to 'learn Ruby' a friend got in touch to tell me another friend was going to run a 10 week course in Linux Systems Administration. I attended that.

I have since started a one night a week course called Linux Systems Administration at City University in London and now this p2pU course with you guys.

My interest is to try and capture those early learning experinces, crystalize and share...

I would like to get paid to do Linux Sys Admin so I have started looking for jobs.

Hey Everyone,

My name is Frank Perez. I'm a website developer in South Florida, where I specialize in PHP Programming, MySQL, as well as JavaScripting. Apart from that I maintain about 5 enterprise web servers as well as a few of my own.

I have worked with linux at a basic level for a few years. Just recently have I gotten really involved with Linux learning the ins and outs.

My goal is to get my Red Hat certifications RHCT and RHCE. I plan on doing this by teaching you and answering/troubleshooting your questions, which will in turn help me study for the exam.

I look forward to working with everyone in helping you become successful Linux administrators.

I would love to hear more from other people in this group. Please leave a comment explaining your background and interest in Linux, as well as a little about yourself.

P.S. Dont' forget to signup for our Linux Study Group.

Hi everyone,

I work in accounting and tax prep and use Linux at home as a humble end user. I started using Linux after hearing so much about it on a tech forum I visit, and stuck with it after being impressed with its speed. I tend to learn what I need as I go along, so there are large gaps in some of my basic knowledge that I'd like to start filling in.

There's a tremendous amount to learn and having heard of p2pu recently, I thought this would be a good chance to learn in a more or less directed manner.

Hello Everyone, my name is Sheldon Apple, don't let the last name scare you I have no ties to Apple (darn it !).

I am an old dog at this being involved with computers since they first hit the market. I have years of experience in networking and systems integration / migration. I first started with a company that sold 3Com cards and installed many straight bus topologies (RG8 and RG58 cables), arcnet, and token ring. From there as networks and technology evolved so did I.

I worked in Kuwait after the first gulf war re-building networks and integrating PC's with Concurrent, HP3000, and AS 400 mainframe systems via a gateway that ran Banyan Vines. It was in Kuwait where I studied Unix and fell in love with it.

I earned an Associate degree of Applied Arts and Science in Telecommunications from Rochester Institute of Technology. My first exposure was with Red Hat Linux and since I had some experience in Unix, I absolutely loved it and that was many years ago. I am not a Bill Gates fan, and I found that the Linux system was the future and so far it's taking hold and it has evolved beautifully. I installed Ubuntu many months ago and I just love how it pumps up the volume on my PC compared to that lag Microsoft Windoze.

I fell upon this P2PU website by mistake and I think it was a sign for lo and behold a Linux course is being offered, I enrolled immediately. I want to learn more about Linux, and my plan is to write the certification for Linux + as soon as I complete this course.

So far I am very happy how this course is progressing.

Good Luck to all !

Hi everyone,

I am a student in my second year of college. I have been interested in programming since I was quite young and have been in a number of website development using PHP, MySQL and Python/Django frameworks.

I want to now start contributing to some open-source project and also want to get into some serious programming. So I installed Ubuntu onto my system but did not know where to go from there and that is why I took this course.

Wish a great luck to all!!!!

Hello,

my name is Redas Nekrosius,i enrolled in this courses for few reasons, one of which is simple curiosity and other is that i think any person that is or is planning to be involved in IT,should have good fundamentals of this OS.
Currently i'm working on my webpage(naranyra.atspace.me ,but still fixing everything) and trying to add some simple works that i did(nothing serious though) and hoping to finaly maybe get at least somekind job in programming,so i could end this torture with my current occupancy(labouring..:/) :)
Good luck all and thanks Mr. Frank for this course!
