Web hosting

Hi,

It was a pleasure attending class today with everyone, and thank you Austin again.

There are many hosting providers out there. They essentially are companies that have really cool computers called servers in a building that you share with other users. They also have a way better internet connection than you do. This is where your website/webpages will go. You upload it to the server via FTP FTPS and SSH (is there more ways anc correct me if I'm wrong?). This is where the filezilla program comes into play. After you upload them anyone can type in the URL (remember ted.com) into thier browser and it will take them to the file(s) that you uploaded to your server.

I use bluehost.com for bunglebus.com (a flash site I created using adobe bridge, only a slideshow of photos). I also use 1and1.com for tampabaydiscsportsclub.com . I find that customer support is important at the stage I am now within web developement. Bluehost offers great 24/7 service online and over the phone, but only used it once It was when I uploaded bunglebus.com. My website wasn't showing up after uploading, and had to call to figure out why. I had my website within an extra folder, and called them up and they moved it down a folder for me and got it working within 2 minutes from the time I hit talk on my phone! Eventhough, I wish they would have taught me why.

1and1.com is also highly recommended. The disc golf club also pays around 100 bucks a year for that as I do with bluehost.com I plan on moving them over to my server, but don't really know how to do it. I have not had any problems with them. When I update the club's site and ftp it via dreamweaver it is shown right away on the web.

What hosts have you found? what are thier benefits? Can we share our web hosting server? Can a hosting provider host a domain that is registered with another company? Anything web hosting Q&A

I found this http://webhostinggeeks.com/ , it is a list of different web hosts.

sorry about the disc golf club's website. The link is right, but the wording is wrong. It is a .org and not a .com. .com is just a habit for me. The guy who has registered the .com wants to sell it to us. What a jerk, if you ask me. Anyone have any ideas on how to take the domain from him since it is just "parked" right now? It is our club's name, the same name on our tax ID.

Eugenia Ortiz, classmate of ours, suggested 000webhost for personal websites because it is free. They also have a very very cheap price plan if you want more features. http://www.000webhost.com/ and Eugenia's comment can be found at http://p2pu.org/node/5588/forums/9142#comment-2492

Great discussion so far, you can use any hosting situation as long as it supports FTP.

Another freemium host is http://www.webenabled.com/ It was suggested by Jason John Wells in the Web Dev 101 forum. He also taught me a new word, free+premium=freemium, i am soo going to use that. I have never used this service, but would be interested how it is, if someone does.

Hi Kyle, thank you so much for providing so much information about hosting service.

For me, fortunately my university provides a ftp and webhosting service for everyone. It work pretty much the same way as Kyle described. So if you're now studying or working in a university, you might also get one space for free there.

Cool tip Bodong! also Dhrubajyoti another good place. I have no experience with any of these freemium hosting services and would like to see how these providers work for people and thier needs. Also has anyone seen/know what features they want that these freemium sites don't provide?

actually if you go for free sites you miss atleast some features that premium services offer...for example the site which i had mentioned 000site.net offers a host of services that is incomparable with any other site that offers free hosting...i searched for months but could not find a better one...if someone has please let me know...
now the downsides 000site does not offer automatic script installers and the uptime is not very good...

the second site you may go is:
http://www.000webhost.com/356351.html (copy/paste this link and i will get some money for advice)
it offers good uptime but not so much web space and bandwidth...

to be very direct, the features that free sites often miss out are:
1) unlimited bandwidth
2) unlimited space
3) uptime is not good
4) multiple sql not supported
5) advanced cpanel
6) unlimited domains hosted
7) ssl secure server
8) free website builder

you can easily find these features on premium hosts like godaddy.com...hope u find it useful...

Cool thanks! I will stick with bluehost as I already got sucked into 2 years. I happen to see 000webhost scam while typing it into my google search bar. I clicked on that and found that people are having problems with the affiliate program, but still recommend the free hosting. Something that isn't that important to me now, but when I get more involved and more site hits I am sure I wouldn't mind some cash coming my way to pay for the hosting. http://bit.ly/agmbHx also http://bit.ly/ao90Qv
