Demystify the success behind online communities. Exchange and understand basic human behaviors and emotion in order for you to adjust your process and techniques to leverage people's experience . Design an environment that motivates and helps create better human interactions.
Are you a Web developper, a Business man, a Designer, a Project Manager and are currently working on an Online Community? Are you building/thinking people's interactions, understanding what to do when users are misbehaving and need advice and guidelines?
This course is for you. It will help you adopt some basic design thinking to help you understand the structure of a community, the basic interactions between people, and the dynamic and tips for how to increase length of stay and other activities that could help sustain the community.
We will cover the basic understanding of communities using metaphors with the real world and offline communities. Draw some conclusions, prepare a set of questions to ask ourselves before building an online community. Setting people's goals, rewards and motivation. Setting business goals clearly. Setting branding goals.
You will walk out of this course with a guide you will have built yourself that will help you doing a great job.

@joe palmer - Here are a few
@joe palmer - Here are a few links I've come across while designing. I don't think any specifically relate to making community web apps, but it's something.
http://dribbble.com/ - High quality designers who do a lot of work on web apps. Search the UI tag.
http://webdesign.tutsplus.com/ - New(ish) site devoted to teaching some of the basics of design theory as it relates to the web.
http://www.designerstalk.com/forums/ - Great forum filled with high-quality designers. Not necessarily community or even web-design, but they'll give you pretty solid (and offensive - have a strong stomach) advice. Some of the posts on this site are NSFW.
http://ffffound.com/ - Random designer tidbits from around the web. Nice inspiration.
http://www.cssrainbow.com/ - A huge collection of CSS/Flash galleries. It'd be really nice if someone found one of these that had a "community" theme to it. Please reply if you do.
To be honest, I can't really think of any decent UX tutorial resources. It's a shame.
I think what's helped me the most is just drawing inspiration from dribbble. The quality of the designers on there is so high that when you see one do something like this ( http://dribbble.com/shots/159790-Backend-Interface-Design ) you can begin studying what they did.
It's no substitute for actually understanding the theory behind user experience, but it's something I suppose.
Another little resource I stumbled upon for actual ux theory was some old book from the US government that went over UX. I forget the name of it, but it went over a lot of the basics (people like an FAQ, people want to see a search box around the nav bar somewhere, etc).
I'd really like to see if anyone has a good resource on UX, so I encourage anyone to follow this up and can't wait for this class to launch. Hopefully it won't be underwhelming and the few days it runs will lay a lot of knowledge down on our candy asses.
Thanks Cory, I will look at
Thanks Cory,
I will look at all of that, now is about bed time. Here, this is really nothing to do with comunity, but I was looking at this the last few hours and some of it would plug into community, like map diredtions- anyway it's just a pass on as a thanks! Lets keep it going, I'll relay back in a few days- thanks again!

Just got a link to this from SmashingMagazine.com which also has some great stuff on the subject. It's quite a big list of style and UI guidelines. http://www.theuxbookmark.com/2010/08/interaction-design/a-monster-list-o...

Hi, everyone!
I am Keledoll from China. I am working on a project which is quiet similar to p2pu, but it is all in Chinese. Our target group are university students. I really want to know how to keep them interest in our website. If there is a seminar about that, that would be great!
