One of the things that struck me when reading through your responses to the course sign-up questions was the wide variety of (1.) what brings you to this class, and (2.) what you're bringing to this class. Expectations, past programming experience, goals, and your course partners were all very interesting. I really enjoyed reading these, and I think you will, too.
In advance of our first class, please take a few minutes to respond to this post with a sentence or two about similar to what you sent us for the application. Feel free to include responses to any/all of the following:
* Where are you?
* Who are you taking this course with? (e.g. friends, co-workers, families, individuals)
* What brings you here?
I'll start:
* I'm in San Francisco.
* I'll be working with J.D. during this course.
* I've been writing code for many years now, but am fairly new to Processing. It strikes me as a great first language to learn, and I'm interested to see where we get with it. I spend a lot of time thinking about peer-to-peer learning, and I'm interested to try out some new ideas on how to do this in the context of a large online open course (Spoiler: the secret is all of you! Would you be willing to moderate the forums? Spend some time helping out others grasp the new concepts? Prepare a few example sketches demonstrating mouse events? Spend an hour discussing the basic gaming concepts of risk and reward? Demonstrate how to work with a great Javascript physics engine? There are lots of opportunities to contribute...)
How about you?
I haven't had any formal programming instruction since the early 90's and that was FORTRAN. I've been teaching myself some Processing and Arduino so that I can teach it to my students. I teach high school physics and electronics at Divine Child High School in Dearborn, Michigan (USA). You can see how I've been using both Arduino and Processing at my course pages http://arduinoeducation.com
I'm hoping to get two things out of this class. First I need to know more so I can teach more to my students. Secondarily I'd like to be able to make some cool simulations and or games to help teach physics concepts.
Hello everyone!
* I am in Bozeman, Montana.
* I'm taking this course mostly on my own, but I have a bunch of interested folks to discuss it with. My husband, Jim, is a quantitative analyst and he's interested in using Processing to visualize his data sets. My working group here at Montana State University also has some interest in using Processing to visualize solar data sets.
* I've done a lot of programming with Matlab, but I want to learn Processing. I like the examples of interactive visualization I've seen done with it and I like that it is open source. I'm considering applying for a grant here at MSU to create a series of programming tutorials using Processing.
Hello Ari and everybody else!
I'm in Pennsylvania, USA.
I don't have a partner for this course, and I'm fine with that. But, if anybody else is in the same situation and would like to collaborate, just let me know.
I'm starting from the perspective of a web designer and beginning developer. I have some very basic experience with javascript and PHP and am still learning every day. Basically, I'd just like to take in all I can about programming in as many different languages as I can before deciding what direction to ultimately focus my efforts and career. In other words, right now I'd like to "learn to program" rather than "learn to program in x". And, Processing seems great for that from what I've heard.
Greetings to all of you!
*I'm from a little place called Rio Meão in Portugal.
*Unfortunately i did not get someone to get along with me in the course. My hope is to know some of you to learn and share knowledge.
*I know a little bit of programming in javascript, php, and others, and i hope that in the end of this course i'll be better prepared and secure to apply my knowledges in wichever project i'll be in. Cause i have some formation in the area of Multimedia and all that i can learn and apply in the that is very welcome. And the fact that Processing. is open-source. Great!!
Hi,
I'm From Milwaukee.
I've been developing Flash applications full time for about 5 years now and I also do the usual front-end web developer stuff (XHTML, CSS, JS, PHP, and some MySQL).
I'm interested in learning Processing because I would like to get into data visualization and explore digital artwork. I'm hoping to gain a better understanding of Java as well.
Hey,
Prague calling, my name is Radim and I am from Czech Republic!
I've come accross Ben Fry's Visualizing data somehow when I was at Erasmus in Liverpool. I read the book, got impressed with the creative notion of working with data and started reading blogs and stuff about data visualization. That's actually how I got here following one of Ben Fry's tweet.
I love visual art, programming and working with data. My goal with this course is explore some new visualization techniques and get more expierience with processing language and programming in general. In the past I played mostly with PHP, Java and databases. Mostly during school projects or at home doing some online tutorials.
Hi everyone,
I'm a high school science teacher in St. Paul, Minnesota.
I told a couple of people about this course and see that Steve Dickie has already posted!
I want to learn more about processing and how to use it with the Arduino. Like Steve, I started teaching a physical computing class last year and my students loved it (they tell me I should stop teaching other classes, don't know how I should take that :). This year I'm teaching a physics class that uses the arduino to build instruments and processing as an interface for the instruments and to visualize the data. We're just starting so I'm curious to see how it turns out.
Overall I'm taking this class because I want to improve my programming skills and figure out how to best use processing in the classroom.
Hey, I'm Marcos, from Córdoba, Argentina.
I don't have a partner for this course, I've some friends interested, but they can't read English. I'm sure I'll find someone here though :)
I come here as a web developer, with and advanced knowledge of PHP, Python, JavaScript and the like. Some Java and C# experience too.
I'm interested in data visualization techniques and Processing seems to be the way to go that field.
Regards!
Hola Marcos, podríamos trabajar juntos, aprovechando la ventaja del lenguaje :P. Curioso que nos encontremos en 2 cursos! Quizá hasta en un tercero xD
Si, de una!
Hi everybody. Hi Ari.
I'm Davide and I live in Turin, Italy.
I work for Arduino and Tinker.it.
I'm a VideoMaker and Digital Compositor and fell in love for Arduino years ago. I didn't have any past programming experience before that time.
No experience in programming besides Arduino and very basic Processing, so.
I really need a step by step class to deepen several possibilities, above all Arduino to Processing communication and data visualisation, with a special sight towards games.
I'm so happy to be part of this real-but-virtual class, and very curious to see how is this going to work.
best regards.
D
ciao Davide!
I'm italian too, and I have an Arduino: I hope this will be a good period to start to use it in a more complex way than let leds blink =)
Ciao maria.
Are you in any case involved in the Kublai project?
Maybe you joined in the open lesson Massimo and Costantino Bongiorno taken in Basilicata a year ago?
my mail is davide@tinker.it if you want to contact me directly.
Ciao davide
yes! i was there =) i'll write you soon, ciao!
Greetings,
*I am living in one of the suburbs of Chicago.
*I will not be taking this class alongside anyone who I know personally, but I hope to make some contacts as the course progresses.
*I have a very basic knowledge of Scheme, which I learned in a computer class in college. It was a really fun class and I got a lot out of it, but I was unable to complete the course. I am really looking forward to getting back into programming. The Processing language sounds like it would be a great place to start, since the visualization will let others appreciate the programs which I will be creating more readily than a program which processes text.
Hi, all!
I'm a homeschooling dad in Madison, Wisconsin, taking this course with my sons so we can learn something cool together & see where it leads.
I've played around a bit under the hood of WordPress, but have not done any real programming. I'm here to learn more about how learning works outside the standard schoolhouse box. (I taught English & math in the Chicago Public Schools for a number of years, and am interested in the possibilities of DIY education.) And to have fun with my kids & all of you. :-)
<<-- Community College instructor and k-12 educator and graduate student in Southern Oregon though I have designs on Astoria, Oregon as my post-grad town of residence.
My programming experience is fairly limited. Mostly wordpress and some scripting. I kinda fell of the java boat a while ago and haven't tried to catch up. Now I am looking for something interesting to get me motivated again.
Hello:
I'm a Database Administer for a school in Minneapolis, MN. Most of my programming experience stems out of having to generate reports with SQL data and Python. I've also done a few dynamic web sites using Django.
Matt Nupen sugested this class to me.
I'm taking this course to learn more about visualizing data. I've also been struggling with the javascript aspects of developing for CouchDB so the higher I can get my JS comfort-level the better.
Hi!
* I'm in New York, NY
* I'll be taking this course with my husband - Joe Mauriello, who is a flash game designer.
* I practice graphic/information/web design and wish to dabble more with information visualization. I also came across this group via Ben Fry's tweet. I have used Processing before, but need more practice for any meaningful output.
Hi!
-I'm from Santa Monica,CA.
-I'll be taking this course with no one, since all the people around me are not interested in coding.
- I'm still a student attending Community College and in the future I hope to learn interactive media and data visualization. I have used Processing before, but never used it regularly. I signed up this class from Ben Fry's tweet.
Hello.
I am an architect and media designer currently based in boston. I have worked for both multi-disciplinary studios focusing in architecture, urbanism and graphic identity as well as an editorial research for design publications.
In both positions My work has always focused on graphic representation of data and imagery. In the past I have always been intrigued about the possibility of implementing processing to help in the creation of data visualizations but I have never put enough time into learning the language that it would help the process. I am hoping that having a project based tutorial with others will help me focus on learning the dialogue needed to understand a efficient utilization and allow me to quickly test a multitude of visualization techniques quickly.
Hi Everyone! I'm K. from Colorado and I 'm an instructional designer for a community college there. I'll be working/collaborating with Chris and Rurik. Let the games begin!
Hi,
I am working on this with my son John , he likes games and I hope he finds a new hobby in it. I am a computer programmer but have never made games so I am very interested.
We live in Gainesville Florida until my wife finishes her PhD. She starts her All But Dissertated exams next week!
Hi, Andrew - good to see another dad here! Hope this is a great experience for both of you. :-)
Hey everybody,
I'm a Master's student at Virginia Tech where one of the things I'm studying is video games as a tool for learning mathematics. This includes both commercial games and educational games. What I'm hoping to get out of this course is an opportunity to create a couple of small games that I've been kicking around in my head for a little while now. I've had a couple programming classes 7+ years ago (C++ and Visual Basic), but my programing skills don't go much beyond that so I'll be glad to have some support.
I don't have anyone I'm taking the course with, but I'm looking forward to collaborating with all of you!
Hello everyone!
*I'm in Madison Wisconsin.
*I'm taking this class with my brother Alex and my dad.
*I've always been interested in programing and have done a small amount of it but I want to learn more.
Hi everyone,
I am Siva. Just moved into Seattle a day back and still hasn't been able to settled down as yet.Hopefully i will be by sunday before the class starts. I am here at University of Washington to do my MS in Architecture in Design Computing.
I am taking up this course with my friend karthik. Though i am a novice in programming i am really looking forward to this course.
I'm at Concordia University in Montreal.
I have been working with computational media for five years or so now – I even took a Processing course with JD at MIT as a high school student and dropped a Processing course at university – but I've somehow never gotten comfortable enough with the JAVA thing and vector graphics to be able to use them for quick fun & profit. Processing strikes me as a wonderful environment for quickly sketching up a 2D visual design for trivial purposes such as a small design contract, promotional material, business cards, etc. I'm interested in it over something established like Illustrator because it opens the possibility of interaction. I am personally wary of the term interaction and try not to use it in my own work (preferring the term "responsiveness"), but I think that subtle interaction in online marketing material, for instance ripples that expand out from the movement of the mouse, can go a long way. Moreover, it's way more fun to do this than to do static design in my opinion.
2D visual design is not my passion – quite the opposite, I dislike it. However, I find myself needing to do it fairly regularly. It's simply essential to have a brand image for yourself, when you need money, 2D design contracts are easy to come by, and I found recently, when working for a research lab or media company, it's very useful to be able to help out with in-house design stuff. Processing seems like a great tool for this, especially now that we have Processing.js.
My own work concerns responsive environments, multi-modal, multi-dimensional interfaces, and resilient communities.
Hi!
- I'm in New York
- I don't have a partner for this course
- I'm a creative coder, and I have experience with Processing and OpenFrameworks. I'm interested in information visualization and I'm curious about the on-line class experience.
Hey all!
I too am in NYC (meetup?)
I teach at Parsons, a design school here in NYC, and have a background in game design and some programming. Although I must say, my programming's pretty rusty. This is part pf the reason I am excited about this course. I am also really interested in the P2PU system, processing, and meeting all of you!

Hello All!
-I am a current grad student from the design school in Harvard.
-I will be taking this course with my friend, Sivaram, now based in Seattle.
-I have minimal programming experience in Processing, engage myself with few other scripting interfaces handling geometry for the most part. As part of my thesis this term, I would be building a data visualizing tool in Processing and I hope this course would help a great deal.
Excited about the course and interacting with everyone here!
Karthik.
Hello Everyone!
I'm an artist currently in Ottawa, ON. I'm not taking the course with anyone and I've dabbled in using Processing and HTML5 for interactive projects and games before, but would like a more solid education and dedicated time to learning Processing.js so that I can build more art-games for the web and mobile platforms.
Emily
Hello Everyone,
I'm the Director for the North Metro SBDC (http://www.asbdc-us.org)in Westminster,Colorado near Denver.
I'm taking this course with Kavon and Rurik cause it seemed like a lot of fun.
I've some some HTML, CSS and C (really long time ago). I'm looking to take a course to get me going on re learning some programming skills and to explore coding.
* Madison WI
* My dad and my brother.
* I've never coded before and I've wanted to work on music for a game of some sort so I thought I should know a little bit of programing before I did that.
I'm programmer and i like to see how a programming course by internet would generate interesting projects. And of course help in whatever and make new code friends.
Hi Everyone~ I'm Damiana, and I'm attending grad school in Madison, WI. I am taking this class with my friend, Sarah, who recommended this course to me because I am becoming increasingly interested in media, especially in graphic design. In particular, I'm looking for ways to both analyze visual data and to produce representations of what I find out. I am a newbie at coding (the last time I tried to code was a basic Comp Sci course many years ago), but I am interested in learning more about what Processing can do.
Hi, Damiana! Glad to see a fellow Madisonian here. What sort of data are you working with?
Yeah, we have a few Madisonians in the class, which is great. I'm working with youth video data, primarily, along with interviews, websites, and curricula. I'm working on how to visualize video data, specifically, for analysis. I have been developing a method, but I'm always shopping for better/easier ways to do it. So, if you know of anything, I'd love to hear about it.
I'm also a grad student in Madison, WI, taking this course with my friend Damiana. Having started my undergrad degree in computer science, completing it in visual studies/studio art instead, and researching games and education nowadays, I'm interested in taking this course to polish my long-lost programming skills, reinvigorate my passion for creating art, and experiment with designing games that will complement my current studies.
Hello, Sarah! I'm not a student here in Madison, but I have read & admired some of David Shaffer's work on educational assessment via simulation games. I'll be interested to see what you'll be building for this course. :-)
Hello Everyone
- I am currently in Sheffield (UK)
- I am taking this class alone.
- I've never done programming before and this course was offering me the opportunity to do so.
Hi all,
I'm J.D. Zamfirescu, currently in Oakland, California. I'm working with Ari to help organize this course.
I've been teaching short courses on programming for several years, and when Ari approached me about teaching in this form, it sounded really interesting! I love processing as a visual art medium, the ability to get started quickly is great.
I am very interested in how the p2pu model will work out, and I love that there will be am online record of the course even after these weeks have passed.
Hello everyone.
I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area. I'm creating teacher professional development focused on new media, design and games. I'm particularly interested in encouraging teachers to help kids make games, not just design them. I just had my first introduction to Scratch. An artist/programmer friend told me about Processing. One more relevant piece of info: I worked at Linden Lab for last four years, doing all things Education in Second Life. I'm looking forward to the course with you all.
Greetings, all...
I work as a part librarian/ part systems admin for a college art department in Detroit.
I came across Processing while setting up a lab in Interdisciplinary Electronic Arts, and am interested in using it to work with various data sets.
I must admit to being equally interested in the instructional platform and the open education movement...
Ian, what college are you at? I teach at Divine Child High School in Dearborn.
Hi!
I graduated in visual and multimedia communication at the IUAV University of Venice and now I'm a freelance graphic designer, living again in Santeramo in Colle, the small town in south Italy where I was born.
I have some basic Processing knowledge coming form my studies and my experiments with shapes modified by sounds that I sometimes use for vj performances.
I'm interested in how digital elements can be modified by physical events, so I think that a "Programming Visual Media" course could be a good way to start to make a little bit of order in my rough and confused programming skills.
Moreover the idea of a peer to peer university it wonderful, so I'm really proud to be part of this course =)
Sorry - I wasn't at home.
* Where are you?
I'm in La Serena - a beautiful and peaceful beach-side city- in Chile.
* Who are you taking this course with? (e.g. friends, co-workers, families, individuals)
Initially I was doing it alone, and then a colleage (sort-of) turned to be interested (Julián Ceballos / jceb). Hope to team-up with more spanish-speaking people around here :).
* What brings you here?
Learn and learn programming, I know a little javascript and nothing about data visualization and I can't come with any idea more stimulating than learning through a game :D.
What would be awesome about this course is to make something that can participate on Game On (Mozilla) → https://gaming.mozillalabs.com/
I'm sorry I lost the first class, I was travelling.
* Where are you?
I live in Madrid, Spain.
* Who are you taking this course with? (e.g. friends, co-workers, families, individuals)
I'm doing this course alone. But I hope to team-up with another "lonely soul" during the course.
* What brings you here?
I'm a musician, a composer, with a classical background but very interested in new technologies applied to music. I think some basics in programming will be useful for me, as I usually work with people who use languages like Pure Data or MAX/msp.
