WEEK 1: Cities and Disaster Risk

In week one, you will examine the trends, impact, frequency and regional distribution of disaster occurrence, and the economical, social, physical and institutional elements of risk and vulnerability in cities. Understanding urbanization, climate change and the need for risk reduction and review the present situation and highlight why there is a need for cities to be concerned. Interrelationships between disaster risk reduction, development, poverty alleviation and the Millennium Development Goals. On a global scale, review international cooperation and initiatives that aim at reducing disaster risk.
 
Case Study: Sound practices of disaster risk reduction in select cities.
Exercise: Create a simple risk table outlining risks, hazards, vulnerabilities facing cities and the potential impact.
