Case Scenario 1

Instructions: Each group should submit one collaborative written answer to the questions at the end of this Case Scenario.  You will submit your assignment by posting it in the Forums.  Case Scenario 1 is due at 11:59 PST on Tuesday, Sept. 28.

Wanda is a high school science teacher, and is considering using the following materials for her history of science unit:

* Excerpts from Darwin’s book "On The Origin of Species"
* Genetic Code Chart, http://www.indiana.edu/~ensiweb/lessons/psa.gc.pdf
* A clip from the PBS science documentary “Einstein’s Big Idea” which Wanda taped from television.
* Clips from the film “Jurassic Park”
* Images of the nine planets which she downloaded from NASA.gov
* One-page fact sheet about the Solar System, which Wanda designed and compiled herself using the following sources:
   - http://www.astronomy.com/asy/default.aspx?c=ss&id=192
   - http://www.nytimes.com/2006/08/25/science/space/25pluto.html
   - Images of the Sun and the nine planets which she downloaded from NASA.gov
* Wanda’s own original drawings and photographs of animals, trees, and other plants that she created while on vacation.
* Wanda’s own original quizzes, research, teaching notes and text about Galileo, prepared as part of her teaching job.

Questions:

Note: If you need additional information to answer any of these questions, identify that information and how it would influence your responses.

1. Identify which type of subject matter is represented by each of the resources Wanda is including in her DVD.  (See 17 U.S.C. §§ 102-103.)

2. Identify whether or not each of the works is protected by copyright, and who owns the copyright in each work.  Explain your answers.

Do we have a copy of the agreement she has with her employer? and the Intellectual property policy of the School Board?
