It's Week 4...already. I feel like we are losing a little momentum so I'm going to suggest an option to do this week's assignment or not. If you would rather finish work you're doing from week 2 or 3, that is fine. I don't want anyone to drop out of the course because they can't keep up! Hang in there!
I also want to take some time to catch up before next week which is SOCIAL MEDIA, something I know we are all interested in.
At any rate, if you would like, here are the assignments for this week. (I personally think the second one is the more valuable.)
I have posted weeks two and three. I was sick and then I felt like I needed to do the reading before completing the week two assignment.
Anyway, I hope a couple of people will take a look at my marketing plan outline and let me know what they think.
My apologies for being inactive the last couple weeks: I was in a sales job orientation for a week, then I was under the weather and then i broke my arm. Typing is slow, but I think I'm now able to focus again! :-)
Ashley,
Sorry to hear about your arm, I hope you get better soon, looking forward to your posting and good luck with your new job.
Thank you very much Javier!
I think the best promotional tool for my open dictionary project is public relations. I have done only a very minimal amount of this so far, mostly as a part of PR I've done for open educational resources in general.
I think that free and open resources are a great PR story in terms of sharing, providing free education for the world, and supporting human rights. (Yes, education is a basic human right according to the U.N.)
To do this, I need to:
- Develop case studies from dictionary contributors (Algot, etc.) and users (Mobictionary, Australia online courses, etc.)
- Develop a PR contact list (can use K-12 lists I already have and add open ed contacts)
- Write 2-3 press releases (introduction including overview of OER, development, use and next steps)
- Send out on a schedule of one press release per quarter
- Follow up
I think a really good promotional tool is affiliate marketing. One huge example of this is the Great Health Debate coordinated by The Renegade Health Show. Kevin put together over a weeks worth of audio interviews by many different health experts debating a certain thing each night (usually 2 people per night). The calls were available for 24 hours to listen to every day and after that you could purchase the whole CD set from his store. But each health expert got an hour of exposure, got the name of their website, service and products out as well as Kevin got his name out to people who were followers of each expert. I’m sure, besides the wonderful content the debate generated, it produced a huge amount of exposure for everyone involved from people who may not have otherwise heard of some of them.
I think this would be the most applicable type of tool which can be used with other websites (maybe I could get some exposure with the Renegade Health Show or similar health and wellness oriented sites) as well as local, for instance I could collaborate with some of the local spiritual groups, or health stores (like Marlene’s Market) to host short seminars or workshops. They would help with the advertising and I would gain potential clients. Maybe I could put together some interviews with wellness experts and record or tape them to use on the website: the expert would get more exposure from my people and I would get more exposure from their people :-)
