Hi everybody!

José here; I'm the organiser of the course and a member of the Open Wonderland community for the last 10 months or so. It's my first experience as a P2PU organiser and I have also applied for a couple of courses, to be able to experience the process from different points of view (if I get accepted in nay of them!).

I'd love to here from everyone about who you are, what do you do, and what are your expections for the course.

Looking forward to working with you all!
José

Hello,

My name is Michel DENIS, living & working in/from south of France, and recently founder of Internet 3 Solutions, a very small startup focusing on virtual worlds solutions and projects based on the Open Wonderland platform/toolkit. Also 11 years @Sun & 12 years @DEC, these seem now to be part of another life.

Though I have been doing programming from time to time during the last 30+ years, and always for a personal pleasure/interest only, the easiest way for me to make a living has been through business dev, project management, consultancy, ... in multinational high tech companies, still always focusing on advanced (too much advanced ?) areas that include: SOA, telecom service and network management, OSS/J (OSS through Java), early virtual worlds solutions .. back in 1995, Intelligent Networks, AI,...).

In this course I'd like to learn, share, experiment, ... and make new friends!

Hi Everybody !

I'm Marlon J. Manrique, I'm an engineer and telecommunications systems, I'm a fan of the Java platform for over 15 years, I am also a fan of Linux, virtual worlds, free software and open hardware.

In virtual worlds have worked a lot with Second Life and OpenSim, developing scripts and designing buildings. With Open Wonderland, I installed the server and tried to implement modules without much success (lack of time).

I am currently teaching at the Universidad Autonoma de Manizales in Colombia, I am teaching operating systems, distributed systems, embedded systems.

I like very much to know about Wonderland Open course in the Peer 2 Peer University, know of the existence of this collaborative space and participate in the course to learn the platform and meet people who work on it, I hope to collaborate on the development of course and to share experiences with my classmates.

I apologize for my English

Hi,

I'm Philip H. Bailey, I've been a researcher in educational uses of computers at MIT for the past 19 years. Prior to that I worked in educational multimedia( film, video, Laserdisc, CD-rom), computer manufacturing, and software development.

My professional involvement in computer graphics began with AutoCad and has evolved with the field. I have at least 10 years experience with Java3D and 15 or more with Java.

I am looking forward to the class and hope to expand the knowledge I learned supervising the migration of the TEALsim Toolkit into a Wonderland module.

Best regards,

Phil

Hi,
I'm Bosco. I'm a Database Architect in a financial company. I play a lead role in
- Designing and implementing databases (and data access) for high volume transaction processing applications
- Performance testing Oracle database applications (data access)
- Developing reusable data-driven (frameworks) applications using Oracle PL/SQL and SQL.
- Developing web-based data-centric application using Oracle Application Express (free RAD tool from Oracle)

Big fan of Virtual Worlds since Dec 2009. Setup and installed OpenSIM and setup Hypergrid connecting to the OSgrid. Did some minimal building and scripting in Second Life. Nothing significant. But, I was very interested in integrating Second Life with an Oracle 11g R2 database using Native web services. For example, consolidating analytical data from a brick and mortar store, with an online store as well as from an in-world store. I think that this Open Wonderland development course would be an excellent opportunity to explore this area and come up with an implementation that would be useful.

Best regards,

Bosco

Hello All,
My name is Morris Ford. I have worked in the computer industry for almost 50 years and am now retired from official work. My last gig was as owner of a small software company that I sold a few years ago. I have experience in all sizes of computers from embedded to mainframes. I have used many operating systems and many programming languages. I have used java for about 15 years and I have been involved with Wonderland for a couple of years. This virtual world is all new to me and being involved with Wonderland (and SL before that) has allowed me a superb opportunity to continue expanding my knowledge. I am looking forward to learning more during this class as well as 'meeting' new people.

Hi, I am Xiaolin. I am from China. I am working on my Ph.D. program of Information science and learning technologies in University of Missouri-Columbia.

Right now, I just joined a project named iSocial. iSocial is a three dimensional virtual learning environment, developed using the Open Wonderland toolkit for creating virtual worlds, for teaching social competence to youth who have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). I just begin my tour on Wonderland. In our lab, some other colleagues is developing tools based on Wonderland for iSocial project.

I have almost 8 years experience on Java web-development. I have developed several web-based learning systems and learning tools. I am familiar with Java web development and related framework, such as, hibernate and struts. I don’t have too much experience with Java Graphics. I know a little bit about Swing and AWT.

Hello all-

My name is Brian Lockyear, I'm fairly new to Open Wonderland. Background is Electrical Engineering and some years in digital design with NASA, followed by a PhD in Computer Sci and another decade in algorithm and software development for Synopsys, an integrated circuit CAD company.

About five years ago I got tired of solving the same jigsaw puzzle over and over again, dropped out and added a Masters in Architecture. I'm particularly interested in geometric programming and design, and all areas where hard computer skills are need to solve hard architectural design problems. I got involved with virtual worlds this past year when asked by a group of researchers at the University of Oregon to help them construct a meeting and gallery space in Second Life, the Laboratory for Virtual Collaborations or "CoLaboratory". I had a great deal of fun with the project and am interested in using Open Wonderland to experiment further with architectural visualization.

That's about it!

Hi all! My name is Nina and I'm really glad this class is going to happen!! Thank you, Jose! (What's the accent key sequence??) Anyway, I have been a software something-or-other for about 25 years, and I like to play with stuff and I can usually break it. I work at Lockheed Martin as a software engineer and have had all sorts of different jobs there. I and a colleague are single/double? handedly introducing Wonderland to our engineering workforce. I have to say it's hard to sell something that's free!!

I have a degree in Psychology and a degree in Computer Science. I am now living in the Ninaverse (like a virtual world), and my house is occupied by very colorful people -- we're slightly off the grey scale. I am very visual (so Wonderland works well for me!), and I am a great user advocate (I was one once...).

I am very passionate about what I do -- I think it compensates for a short attention span. And I love to program and design things, and I really like doing things as a team.

As far as the course goes, I am hoping to be able to solidify what I do know, get some backfilling for what I don't know, and to learn from other people's mistakes besides my own. (A.k.a., Best Practices)

Nice to meet everyone! :)

Hello everyone, we (myself and two other CS faculty members) are working with a student for an independant study/capstone course to learn and use Open Wonderland. As we learn it we are teaching a team of students also as an independant study. We want to learn as much as possible about this very interesting environment. We are coming from Second Life where we quickly ran up against limitations.

Nice to meet everyone.

Hello everyone! I'm an educational software engineer and Learning Sciences researcher who has used Java since the 90's and have developed learning environments utilizing Second Life (citations below) mostly for higher education. I've recently done a lot of work using SproutCore/JavaScript/Ruby on Rails to make software for middle-schoolers. I currently live in Seattle, WA, USA and was born and raised in the California Bay Area. I'm interested in learning how to use OWL to teach physics related content, so I'm interested in how to accurately make Newtonian environments for educational purposes. I also want to make OWL available via a web browser without using Java on the client-side since many USA schools have inefficient networking and can't afford to keep their plug-ins current.

Hello everyone! First I want to say thanks again to Jose for accepting my late application. I am currently a second year student at Essex university studying Computer Science. I really enjoy the subject and I hop to get a good degree when I graduate. I have being interested in virtual reality for some time now, mainly in online multi player games, but lately I am also interested in virtual reality for education.

At the university we have a small team that was formed to develop virtual words for education and at the moment we are mainly focused on Open Wonderland and how to expand it functionality. I, as a new member of the team without much experience with the system, applied for this course in order to get the knowledge and confidence necessary to develop my own modules in the future.

I hop this course goes well and smooth for all of us and we will gain a lot of knowledge and experience from it. See you at the meeting!
