This is the P2PU Archive. If you want the current site, go to www.p2pu.org!
You haven't posted any discussions yet.
The first weekly meeting will be on Thursday, February the 3rd, at GMT: 20:00:00 GMT-5: 15:00 GMT-8: 12:00 GMT+1 21:00.
The community server is at owf1.virtualnorthstar.org:8080
I will post an agenda before each meeting. We will discuss any problems with the reading list for the week. Please have as much reading done before the meeting as you can (ideally all).
The syllabus is at:
http://www.p2pu.org/general/node/12911/document/12912
In pure P2P style, the syllabus is open, so feel free to edit it, or add your comments.
If you cannot make it to the meeting, please use other asynchronous tools (forums, blogs, etc.) for communication. I expect discussion about some of the documents (if they are not clear enough, out of date, you've seen a better one, etc.) through the forum.
Assignments: I will be expecting at least 1 weekly blog post about what you have learned for the week. Your personal blog should be updated sometime after the weekly meeting. As explained before, assessment is also P2P, and at least two other people in the group will read your blog and give feedback (I will come up with a roster for this very soon).
Please don't be late. Due to the different timezones, if we have to wait ten minutes to get started, someone will miss the end of the meeting because they have to go, and that wouldn't be fair. I will try to keep meeting times to 1 hour (people are welcome to hang around in the server after the meeting if desired).
It is better to use a headset to avoid echo and other noises, and we will be using voice chat, so could you all make sure that your system is working before the meeting? the community server is open 24/7, so feel free to log in any time.
Hope to see most of you there on Thursday, and look forward to meeting you all and start working!
cheers,
José
This is the AGENDA for the First meeting on February the 3rd, 2011: http://owf1.virtualnorthstar.org:8080
1. Short round of presentations (don't want to put people off so if you want to opt out, that's fine).
2. Questions about the course (structure, materials, assignments, and so on).
3. Discussion on the reading material. Any problems with the documentation, things that are not clear, etc. At this stage you should have been done with the reading for the week, which for this week means to have (at least) your own module that creates a shape and handles the mouse to change that shape.
You can think of this as a stand up meeting: the idea is to discover any problems but not to get down into discussion. Discussion can be done offline, or at another meeting with people interested in the subject (or at the end of this meeting). What I am trying to avoid is people getting stuck!
4. Discussion on projects/assignments and working groups. If you have any ideas for projects and don't want to do them on your own, now it's the time to pitch them and you might get someone else interested.
Working groups can be created at this stage, although it might be a bit early. If people get together for projects, it could be good to organise stand up meetings out of the weekly meeting times (to be decided by the groups).
5. Adjustments to syllabus and reading materials for next week.
6. Free slot for any topics that have not been covered yet.
Tips:
- using a headset will be beneficial for everyone (less echo, noise, etc.).
- we will use voice chat as the main way of communication.
- please make sure that you can log into the community server before hand.
- the meeting will take place at the develoment area. There is a sign in the main area, also a portal to go there, and an placemark in the menu.
Please do not be late!
And as usual, this is not fixed. There's people in the course with much more orgnaisation experience than me, so feel free to step in!
cheers,
José
Guys, thanks all for coming along!
Sorry about the audio problems for those who couldn't fully participate. We can work on some of the problems during the week, before next meeting.
I will post a short summary shortly, probably in the community wiki so that we can all add content (I'm sure I missed some bits and pieces!)
Cheers,
José
The summary for week one is now at:
http://faithhold.dyndns.org:8080/JSPWiki/Wiki.jsp?page=P2PUWeek_1_Feb_2011
Please feel free to add any content (if you don't have an account in the wiki, you can create one... let me know of any problems!)
cheers,
José
Guys, I have just realised that twitter hashtags do not allow the dash symbol! DOH!
We will have to change it, and as Marlon has already been using p2puow, that seems like a good one to go for... is that OK with everyone?
I will update the weekly notes now!
cheers,
José
Hi guys.
Because of the audio problems, I was not able to follow the meeting. I remember I logged into that server before, and I can hear the chat voice. I don’t know why my audio does not work on Thursday meeting. What’s our plan? Did we have sub groups?
Is the blog the way we learn together? Is there another way? I had a look at the summary of the weekly meeting. Are we going to use twitter? What is the purpose of using twitter? I am not familiar with twitter, and I don’t have a twitter account.
Thanks you very much for your help on my questions.
Xiaolin.
Hi Xiaolin, I've no idea why your audio was not working; where you connecting from behind a firewall? hope we can sort this out before the next meeting.
Regarding groups, we haven't formed them yet. People needed more time to go through the reading for the first week so we will be discussing that at the next meeting.
The blog is the way you can show your learning for the week, and a way for others to give you feedback. That is one of the ways that we can learn together.
There is no need to use twitter, but if you use it and post something about the course, please add the p2puow tag to it.
cheers,
José
Didn't we choose a different tag at the meeting?
We did, but then when we started using it we realised that twitter is not happy with the '-' in p2pu-owl. It reads it just as p2pu.
I added a comment about this in the forum and it's also documented in the notes for the week but if you guys want to use a different one, please let me know.
cheers,
José

Hiya Anne, the subversion repo is not very reliable and it does get stuck at times, but it's a matter of trying the checkout again. At times it does take a couple of attempts. Please let me know if you can check it all out.
By the way, I'm adding you to the course so that you can get notifications when we broadcast messages here.
