First Call, First Material

Hey team,

The verdict is in: somehow all of us actually have one hour of common free time in three days! We'll be chatting / conferencing on Thursday March 18th at 1 PM Eastern Time (USA). For your reference that's 17:00 GMT. I will message each of you so you don't have to 'broadcast' your skype id on the public p2pu boards.

Before hand, I'd like you to do a few things, which should take about a half-hour (really!):

1) Please watch this TED Talk by Tim Brown, CEO of IDEO: http://blog.ted.com/2009/09/a_call_for_desi.php.
It's a better introduction to what design thinking is all about than I could explain in 10 minutes.

2) Make a few notes on any questions you might have regarding his video. Also jot down a few words on how this talk makes you feel. Are you angry - is he wrong? Are you excited? Bored? Is this all nonesense? Write it down. We'll share.

3) Now, after watching this video, take another look at the 'Design Challenge' you submitted as part of your application - that is, the problem in your community or your life that you want to fix. Now, try to write this as a challenge for us, a group of soon-to-be problem solvers. Just like the nurses at Kaiser Permanente asked, "How can we improve the patient experience in our hospitals?", not, "How do we make a faster Hospital?" frame your problem as a question that addresses a human need.

Design thinking isn't the best tool to answer the question 'How do we solve the economic crisis,' but it's probably a great method to explore 'How do we help people save more money?'

Give it a shot. Re-phrase your question. No wrong answers! We will share these on the call, with the goal of choosing two problems soon to explore in the course of the class.

4) Finally, take a look at our call agenda (all times EST US). Notice that we're on a tight schedule with 10 people (!)

13:00 - 13:25 : Introductions & Hopes and Fears
13:30 - 13:45:  Introduce your problem
13:45 - 14:00:  Practice Brainstorm!

Alright. Looking forward to it. Cheers!

"Building in order to think." (Also reminds me of P2PU--it doesn't have to be perfect to try it--everything is in "beta" these days or in "pilot" or in "prototype".) This makes sense when it is human-centered--because the goal is to refine and make better, not make a big splash or profit.

"From consumption to participation." (strikes me as similar to the remix culture we are encouraging here at P2PU as well--consumers are also creators, but creators making something out of something.)

"In times of change, we need need new ideas... and a divergent approach (versus a convergent approach). Focus on systems to have a bigger impact.. Take a more expansive view of design. Start asking the right questions."
