I'm creating this forum post shortly before our first chat. OpenStreetMap.org is a free online map which anyone can view, modify, and download. Think of it as a Wikipedia of maps. The information comes from a variety of sources, including official government maps , coordinated volunteers, and curious editors like ourselves.
Much of the US and western Europe is mapped, but there are always places to add, update, and detail. In other countries, OpenStreetMap has taken off where other maps fall short. Map Kibera in Kenya and Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team in Haiti are two projects that I know which have done amazing work. Those two links just scratch the surface of what's being done, so add interesting articles and map projects that you find.
We already have some good posts made about OpenStreetMap:
"I see it the same as Wikipedia and other open-source information sources. The positive is that you get the collective wisdom of many people, some of whom are very knowledgeable. The negative is that some people may not be so well informed and post incorrect information -- either without knowing or to be deliberately malicious." - Sharon Machlis
"I have a job with OpenStreetMap, and I am editing Streets and Intersection between roads" - Besfort Guri ( see Besfort's edits to OpenStreetMap )
Help people new to open source: What does it mean to be open?
OpenStreetMap: What are positives and negatives of being open? What are people doing with OpenStreetMap?
OSM is great. I have been editing OSM since 2007. I started with my own village and I have done a lot in adjacent areas but typically within 20 km of my home. I am lucky to have reasonably good Yahoo imagery in my area so all I need to do is trace the streets and buildings from the Yahoo satellite imagery. I usually use Potlatch to do the editing. You can see a sample of my edits here:

I have been thinking about organizing an OSM Meetup or Mapping party in my area but so far I have not made any solid plans.
On #p2pu-webcraft/online-maps-openlayers (http://p2pu.org/webcraft/node/12927/chat) and no one else is on. Am I in the wrong chat or the wrong time?

I'm a big fan of OSM and my edits can be seen here: http://www.openstreetmap.org/user/seanhorgan/edits.
I worked with another user to define a tag for social facilities like homeless shelters:

@ Nick Doiron, I am working in OpenStreetMap a long time, I am working all around my country, my job is editing streets and intersection between streets, and other project is writing a handbook for OSM for OpenStreetMap in Albanian language, and I miss the first meeting I thing in chat, I am sorry
@Besfort Can you join us for a chat on Saturday?

I'd like to watch the video that bernie kindly made and posted but all I get is a black screen (probably because I don't use adobe products). I've searched for a simple explanation but haven't found it. Can anyone point me to some basic instructions?
thx
@Introvert: I used Jing to record the video (http://www.techsmith.com/jing/). Jing video is recorded in the Flash format (SWF). So if you don't have the Adobe Flash Player you won't be able to watch the video I made.
@Bernie, I do watch flash videos, using gnash. If I can't watch it within a web browser, I try clive to download the video. But clive does not work with all sites.
spent today finding out how to edit:
1) I can't use Potlatch as I don't use adobe products (from #osm)
2) Merkaartor is probably nice but doesn't have the detailed images I need
3) JSOM is nifty, with a learning curve, and I never found suitable docs. TOEBEE at #osm walked me through everything. And it has the detailed images I need.
I added info for a building:
http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=-41.31487&lon=174.78431&zoom=17
4) But I am concerned that the building info is not correct for NZ. I had to call it a kindergarten when, in fact, it is a Playcentre. They are both early childhood services but with different philosophies and even service different age ranges. I am sure that some will be offended by this, Any advice on how I can instigate a discussion to change this so it suits Aotearoa/New Zealand?
5) As there are about 500 Playcentres, is there a way to automate any parts of this process?
Open source doesn't mean only the free use of products as it's being misunderstood lately. It's been inspired of the idea that we share knowledge in order to gain as much as we can from the whole effort, having in mind that it's from us to us so we have to try making it better and better. In the same concept belongs the OpenStreetMap project. Sharing voluntary knowledge (meaning not having commercial benefit) the system gets updated with latest and more accurate info. Having in mind the recursive use of the open source products that I mentioned above, every time we make our best effort to have a precise end product. The last objective is not always possible but through the community and cooperation (both elements of open source philosophy) everything seems feasible. Although, we are all trying on the same purpose there're always be malicious users trying to corrupt the result only for their personal pleasure. Either the corruption come of malicious users or users with incomplete knowledge, there should be safety locks to prevent these side effects.
I'm new to using OSM but here is my first attempt at making some edits.

OSM Project of the Month is adding buildings. This link has tips on adding buildings:

oops I'm just getting into OMS now. I will be around my chosen area-to-map for the next few days (http://www.openstreetmap.org/user/ashs) so I thought I'd collect some coordinates using 'freegps' on my iPhone & then add these to OMS - when I get back near the internets again that is. Nothing very significant that I can see but a way in playing with editing.
Ha! I thought I had simple editing of OSM downpat and then they add go and Potlatch2 and Bing map imagery since November. NB: It can take some time for buildings and such to be rendered throughout the various layers.
