I'd like to learn how to build a site from the ground up, how to modify the list of items in the editing tool bar to better meet my needs, how to change the specifications for the gallery from page to page, and how to update a WordPress site without causing problems. Actually, I may have too many questions to go into here. -Thanks.
I'd like to learn how to make the website a TRUE visual *experience* -- it's very important that the website catch the viewer and suck them in! ...and of course all the tricks and not-easy-to-find bonuses that might go along with WP.
I'm truly interested in getting more familiar with CSS, etc. & the lingo of WP & web design in general.
I know a blog is a type of website. I have created blogs and websites. Are we creating a wordpress blog or website or both in this course? Technology changes so fast. Do you think blogs are replacing websites? If this is of interest to others, cover in course what is the difference bewteen blogs and websites and why do one over the other? Websites seem like more hassle than blogs so why should people keep creating them?
A blog aka web log is a type or part of a website. So, yes we are creating a wordpress blog and website in this course. Blogs will not replace websites because a blog is a website that does a specific task. Wordpress is an open source blogging platform that can be used as a content management system (CMS) for websites beyond blogs. Saying a website is more of a hassle than a website is completely subjective. A website can be a single static page (a menu and contact information for a restaurant) to something complex as Amazon.
Thank you for replying.I am fairly new to all of this so I am in learning mode. I was thinking about how I have a few simple web sites that I have to pay to get hosted and are created in Dreamweaver, which I don't know well. I want to be able to update them easily and refresh the content. so I think I should replace them with blogs, which I could get hosted for free and update often. So I am thinking a blog would be better than the websites I have now. (and as you say, a blog is a type or part of a website) And replacing a powerhouse like Amazon.com with only a blog would not make sense. Thanks for helping me clarify things and if you have any further thoughts on this please let me know.
I'd like to know how to customize Word Press without having to pay $300 for a new copy of Dreamweaver. Extra points if I can use software that I can run from Ubuntu.

.
I'd like to learn more about modifying the layout of pages and the controls for features such as the slideshow.
What plugins are needed, without bogging things down when there's an upgrade. Or how to upgrade and maintain the integrity of the site.
Yes :)
How to deploy as a CMS for small clients.
Thanks!

@Nicole Wilson use bare bones TextWrangler on OSX, KomodoEdit on windows. Both are free, open source and blow dreamweaver out of the water.
