Group D - Getting Started

Go back to: General discussion

Hello, Group D!

Please get started on the following tasks, intended to help you get to know your fellow group members and get accustomed to communicating online.  Please use this Forum to get started on the following tasks ASAP.

  1. Introduce yourself to your classmates and explain why you are taking this course.
  2. Decide who will be responsible for submitting each of the group responses to the Case Scenarios.
  3. Figure out which technology will work best for your group to connect and collaborate throughout this course.  It may be a good idea to “meet” online at agreed times to discuss each week’s discussion questions or Case Scenario. (You are free to use the P2PU Forum for all of your group discussions if you think that will work best.  However, there are numerous other technologies out there that provide real time/live communication capabilities.  See the link for Communication Tools under Course Materials for some suggestions.)

Hello, Group D!

My name is Sheri Kendall and I currently teach in the health professions department at a local community college. Last Spring I was accepted on a committee that is charged with developing an OER and through this process I was introduced to the concept of open textbooks. I am now interested in learning everything I can in an effort to bring this idea to the administration of the college.

I look forward to working with everyone!

Sheri

My name is Sarah Weston and I am the Curriculum Director at Open High School of Utah. We use and create OER as the basis of the majority of our courses. Because of this, copyright law and creative commons licensing are always hot topics at our school! I look forward to learning more and being able to share this information with our staff.

I am Rurik Nackerud - I teach at the local community college (social media) and am a graduate student getting my secondary endorsement for general science and language arts. Between this course and the Open Textbooks course I hope to gain a firmer understanding of what I can do as an educator, what my students can do, and how to facilitate open practices in my district.

I am not sure what works best for everyone else regarding "meeting times or venues." I am comfortable with many platforms from skype to elluminate or if people prefer, asynchronous communication.

I noticed other groups are meeting weekly and think this might be a good idea. I am familiar with Skype and a few other platforms. Suggestions on time or platform?

How about a google doc? Here is one that I have given everyone access to view and edit. https://docs.google.com/document/edit?id=1NRQMZK7lji03kUelXThgJtnzoIZe8F...

Take a look at the Google Doc. There are 8 items we need to tackle. Why don't we each sign up for 2 and answer the questions for them? I used the INSERT menu and then "comment" to tag the 2 items I will address.

Here is a shorter url: http://tinyurl.com/365oqcz
The google doc link is cut off in the emailed version; however, the link in the forum does work properly.

Group D? Anyone there?
I have posted the Case Study #1 assignment. I have completed it, but would appreciate the group's input. I am sure there are nuances of copyright law that I have missed. It is a google doc, so you can still edit the assignment even though I have submitted it.

I am here and I apologize for my absence. Family issues. I am back and have reviewed the doc. Give me a few hours to get caught up.

Thank you for taking the lead on this.

Hi all,

It looks like I've been moved from group E to group D. Here's the introduction that I posted to the Group E - Getting Started thread:

My name is Logan Cox and I work for a small nonprofit that uses robotics programs to get students excited about science, technology, engineering, and math. Primarily, I'm a web geek and IT guy, but I've become increasingly involved in the program side of things and with the design and production of educational materials. I signed up for this course because I'd like to have a better understanding of copyright law as it applies to the educational materials that my organization produces and the student work that we facilitate.

That's all still true :-)

So, moving along, what's the plan for Case Scenario 2? How can I help?

My apologies everyone - beginning of the fall term for the university and I was hit hard with all the students suddenly showing up and throwing off my calm world. Oh wait...that is what I want. At any rate I had not anticipated the level of insanity this year would bring. I hope to get re=engaged with the group this week and next. Please let me know if there is anything I should be doing to support the group.

I will check into the docs and hopefully add by Friday. (Forgot how hectic Fall can be with all the new Freshman).

I started the next doc (Just copied the case study so far). If someone prefers not to use this doc that is fine. Sorry that Sarah has been shouldering the burden in this group!

To the new group D:

I picked two scenarios to complete on the google doc. Not sure how many of us there are. Can you each grab one or two (choose "insert comment" and label them as yours)?

Thanks!

I completed this assignment. Midnight deadline was coming on fast and I have not seen anyone tag any of the other items in the case study to complete. Group D? Where are you??

Here is the completed assignment. Look it over if you get this. I will be submitting it in about an hour.
