I noticed some people were having difficulty connecting to the audio stream of the conference, I wonder if people have thoughts on how the course can be more accessible. Or if people want to tell what problems they're having participating.
One thing that I think would be great in the spirit of open standards would be to have a standard SIP VoIP number to call in to rather than requiring a Skype account, because skype is not very cross-platform. But maybe this is a limitation of the conference service.
Just to add to this thread, it would be great to know A) in general, how did the technical part of the call work for you, i.e., audio quality, the document sharing and chat, getting connected, and so on, and B) what other tools do you have experience with that could also play this role for the course?
It all worked fine EXCEPT that Calliflower didn't function slide-wise on, er, Firefox! I had to switch to Safari to get full functionality. Eep!
This was my first time with Calliflower, and it was near-flawless from my end.
Some thoughts: I couldn't see the whole handwritten slide at one time unless I went to full-screen mode, and then I couldn't see the chat box. Otherwise, Firefox worked fine for me, unlike Josh I had no issues. I am using Firefox 3.6.9 on Mac OSX 10.4.11, if that helps with debugging.
I was the guy who spoke out of turn "artists won't allow it" though. I thought I had muted myself during the Q-and-A portion of the event, since I was calling in from a very noisy newsroom. Perhaps when all were muted, I was switched back to unmuted? (If you're curious, I was being asked about live-streaming a local concert on our website.)
I went to the IRC channel afterwards, but a conversation never really developed. That part worked find, from a technical perspective, though, and I wouldn't mind integrating it more into the course.
Again, my thanks to everyone who participated and to the lecturers. Excellent start to the course.
I was on Chrome; worked flawlessly.
I wasn't able to participate in yesterday's discussion, I was stranded in a location that had no wi-fi access! Oh the horrors! Is it possible to participate today?
@Marlon x: I noticed today that Calliflower has an "iNum" (http://www.inum.net/) +883 5100 0110 8000 Would that work for connecting from a VOIP/SIP client?
@Chip Oglesby: You can always call-in to the lectures from a telephone. There are local numbers all across the US and for most countries in the world. Just keep your eye out for the call-in number that is sent out with the invite to the lecture.
Phillip.
Cool, I haven't been able so far to connect to that "iNum" number with any voip client, but I don't know much about the iNum standard. It does seem like you're supposed to be able to. If anyone else has had success with this, please let me know.
Hi all. I didn't get an email invite to lecture 2 and couldn't find any links on the site to it. I went into the IRC channel to request info and nobody responded. A little frustrating as I was loking forward to hearing Burt Herman speak. Anyone else have this issue?
Hi Dave, the email sent earlier today said that they would be sharing links tomorrow morning.
Hi all. Yes, just went back and re-read the email. The site still says Sep 16 which is a little confusing. As I mentioned I am happy to assist in helping maintain and develop the site. Let me know and look forward to some great lecture action tomorrow.
Hi Phillip, I had a trouble in the first class, where it seems like my Skype account didn't had enough credit, because skype hang up and I couldn't call again, and I had to call by phone while I was hearing the class. I don't know if that's going to happen again today. Do I have to have credit amount in my skype account? and also I can't find a way to connect through my android 1.5. (I wont be at home today) fring is not working with skype anymore, I supose that I can use the web to see the comments, but I can't find a way to connect the converstation through phone-wifi or 3g if it is not a regular expensive phone from argentina. Any suggestions?
Did you try just calling the local number in Buenos Aires? +54 115 984 1157
Alternately, as suggested, you can add Calliflower as a contact in Skype and then you won't need any Skype Out credits to make the call.
Last but not least, there's an iNum number, which is a VOIP call, if you have a VOIP client: +883 5100 0110 8000
Hope that helps a bit.
Phillip.
Yes, the best way really is to add Calliflower as a Skype contact, and then call and input pin.
I called in from Tokyo, and even forgot to hang up at the end of the lecture. Really glad I didn't have to use Skype Out.
Re: Android -- Have you tried the Skype application for Android rather than Fring?
Mariano, it looks like you add calliflower as a contact and you call that instead of the landline number.
No, I called just like a phone number. The same number that I used to call again by regular phone.
Hi all. I missed the lecture yesterday (unfortunately it's at 1800 UK time which means all being well I'm on a train and can listen in but if I miss it I'm at a busy station and it's impossible). Is the audio posted anywhere?
Don't worry, found the audio!
During conference calls, would it be too confusing to ask people to use the p2pu IRC chat rather than the built-in Calliflower chat? Because the calliflower chat interface, to be blunt, sucks. The window is too small, you can't scroll through it while people are posting, and it's generally not customizable. I feel like this made conversing more difficult last time. I know when we're all on the calliflower page folks are inclined to use the chat box right in front of them, though.
Just a note: if we do go to IRC, and you're like me and resist the idea of installing yet another program on your overheavy and top-loaded conestoga wagon of a computer, there is Mibbit (http://www.mibbit.com) for a webpage-based IRC client.
I'm going to try this. Any advice?
Well, there's also the Web-based IRC chat client right here on the P2PU site! :) http://p2pu.org/general/node/5644/chat
