Week 6, October 25-27, 2010: Government journalism & engaging your readers
Lecturer: Amanda Hickman, Document Cloud.

Meeting times

  • Live meeting (audio & chat): Monday, October 25th, 1PM Eastern (attendance highly recommended)
  • Course conclusion & final peer assessment (group chat, possible video): Wednesday October 27th, 1PM Eastern (attendance highly recommended)

Readings and Assignment
Realizing that the class ends on October 27th and we got the readings to you late this week, there's probably not much time for an assignment this week. So do your best to get through the readings -- Amanda would like for you to come prepared to chat about one or two of the project links below, if you can -- and consider this both the reading & assignment for next week.

Please take a look at http://www.documentcloud.org  and  http://blog.documentcloud.org/blog/2010/09/questions-answered/
Consider taking the Public Insight Network survey on reader engagement:
http://www.publicinsightnetwork.org/user/form_display.php?isPIJ=Y&form_code=f02d5b67e445

Pick one or two of the following and look them over with an eye toward these questions:
* Do they do a good job of conveying information?
* Where might the project succeed and fail in fostering civic engagement?
* Is the project easy to use and technically sound? How could it be made easier to use or otherwise improved?

Projects
Again, look around at as many of these as interest you, but it'd be great if you came prepared to chat about 1-2 of them. Have a favorite you'd like to add to the list? Go for it.
