gueorgui 2010-06-14T00:07:16+0000
haha.
mikecaulfield 2010-06-14T00:07:40+0000
I think my project is likely single, although if someone wanted to do a parallel project about tuition increase in a different country it might be really neat.
nadhirus_ 2010-06-14T00:07:52+0000
hi
gueorgui 2010-06-14T00:08:08+0000
Mine definitely would be better with an international team.
AlanCWebb 2010-06-14T00:08:16+0000
sure, that's fine
nadhirus_ 2010-06-14T00:08:38+0000
sorry i had some trouble with my internet connection
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:09:14+0000
btw, yushi, you're recording ustream right?
Yushi 2010-06-14T00:09:39+0000
yes
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:09:44+0000

Catharina 2010-06-14T00:12:03+0000
Hi Joi! hi everyone
janak 2010-06-14T00:12:09+0000
alan: kill the sound on your ustream
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:12:20+0000
our close the ustream window while speaking on skype
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:12:32+0000
janak, make sure you ask dan to do this when you connect with him
janak 2010-06-14T00:12:39+0000
i will
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:13:11+0000
what is the output?
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:13:13+0000
blog?
mikecaulfield 2010-06-14T00:13:24+0000
Alan I like the idea a lot. Policy geeks unite!
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:13:37+0000
dedicated blog or on your blog?
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:13:51+0000
part of the class will be about interacting with your audience and promoting your content
gueorgui 2010-06-14T00:13:54+0000
I love the idea as well.
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:13:55+0000
so think a bit about where you want to post it
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:14:02+0000
but it's a good idea
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:14:31+0000
if you want to set up a dedicated blog with us, let me know
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:14:32+0000
anyway, thanks
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:15:03+0000
dan, go for 30 min or more if you like
dangillmor 2010-06-14T00:15:17+0000
i'll keep it somewhat shorter
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:15:18+0000
and make it as interactive or not - whatever you like
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:15:20+0000
ok
dangillmor 2010-06-14T00:15:27+0000
i'm off ustream now; waiting for skype call
AlanCWebb 2010-06-14T00:15:40+0000
Thanks Mike, looking forward to discussing!
AlanCWebb 2010-06-14T00:16:01+0000
Also Gueorgui, let's discuss :)
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:16:57+0000
it would be funny if the author of "We The Media" didn't interact and only lectured I guess ;-)
gueorgui 2010-06-14T00:17:38+0000
AlanCWebb: Allright, let's email after the session's over: gueorgui@gmail.com
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:19:28+0000
Yushi can you type "Streaming second seminar from Keio" in the "update" box of UStream broadcaster and hit the "update" button?
Yushi 2010-06-14T00:21:24+0000
done! did it show up?
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:21:28+0000
yup. thanks!
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:21:46+0000
also, it sounds like you've got the microphone on the laptop selected
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:21:52+0000
from the keyboard sound
philippSA 2010-06-14T00:21:56+0000
yushi: careful, your audio is very loud - don't say anything you don't want us to hear ;-)
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:22:01+0000
can you see if you can set the audio to the mic on the video camera?
Yushi 2010-06-14T00:22:07+0000
ok ill watch out
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:22:14+0000
we just heard your stuffy nose
Yushi 2010-06-14T00:22:16+0000
ill check the mic too
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:22:42+0000
the audio should be a pulldown menu
Yushi 2010-06-14T00:22:48+0000
ooops rainy and cold today in tokyo
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:22:50+0000
on the broadcast window
Yushi 2010-06-14T00:23:15+0000
is that better?
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:23:17+0000
this is one point where Dan and I sometimes disagree
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:23:27+0000
much better!
gueorgui 2010-06-14T00:23:30+0000
oh wow that's so much better
Lena 2010-06-14T00:23:37+0000
that's great
Yushi 2010-06-14T00:23:37+0000
ok great
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:25:17+0000
and FWIW Dan = slightly lefty, ernest and "people loving" journo
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:25:23+0000
his bias
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:26:12+0000
dan dropped from IRC too hmm
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:26:18+0000
I wonder if it was something I said
gueorgui 2010-06-14T00:26:26+0000
probably the lefty comment :)
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:26:35+0000

JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:27:17+0000
btw, yushi, remember the audio setting on the mic and on the computer for this. It's working very well.
Yushi 2010-06-14T00:27:41+0000
ok
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:29:32+0000
janak, when you have the mic again, tell dan to get back onto IRC
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:29:38+0000
we should take questions here after he's done
janak 2010-06-14T00:30:33+0000
<JoiIto> janak, when you have the mic again, tell dan to get back onto IRC <--- Ok. Will do
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:30:39+0000
thanks
janak 2010-06-14T00:30:47+0000
I'll wait til he finishes
janak 2010-06-14T00:30:50+0000
he is on a roll
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:30:54+0000
yup, let him finish
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:32:50+0000
I've got one question when he's done : Is professional journalism going to continue at its current level and if not, who will protect amateur journalists from legal and physical harm for investigative journalists in the way the big news agencies currently do. (I can paste this again when he's on IRC)
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:34:18+0000
(unless they're wrong)
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:34:19+0000
heh
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:34:47+0000
hey dan
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:35:48+0000
I think the intent is also really important
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:36:12+0000
because you can be thorough without being clear
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:36:26+0000
a "cover-your-ass" kind of thoroughness that people do in their tax returns
Andriak 2010-06-14T00:44:39+0000
IRC n00b testing. Ignore.
Will___ 2010-06-14T00:45:20+0000
Ignored :)
gueorgui 2010-06-14T00:45:47+0000
mmm, noctilux.
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:45:58+0000
yes, freedom to fail = cost of failure = low = innovation = high
Andriak 2010-06-14T00:47:21+0000
Thanks, Will. :)
Will___ 2010-06-14T00:48:10+0000
good thing to hear my home country's doing cool with API and jounralism, but i cant imagine my father (or people that age) using it :(
gueorgui 2010-06-14T00:48:23+0000
Programmer here!
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:48:29+0000
and we need to keep an eye on "database rights" - some countries have that in addition to copyright. Be careful about projects that collect free content and then exert "database rights" to lock them up. Often screws up attempts to open API later.
Laurian 2010-06-14T00:48:58+0000
another programmer here ;)
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:49:36+0000
in this weeks readings there is a line that says that it's easier to teach programmers to become journalists than to teach journalists how to program ;-)
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:49:39+0000
made me smile
Will___ 2010-06-14T00:49:53+0000
hmmm :)
gueorgui 2010-06-14T00:50:01+0000
that's actually a huge relief for me, heh.
Andriak 2010-06-14T00:50:13+0000
Yeah, the programmer/journo line makes me grimace. :)
Laurian 2010-06-14T00:50:15+0000
gueorgui: :)
Will___ 2010-06-14T00:50:21+0000
thats saying journalsm is easier than programming
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:50:33+0000
yes, it is like saying that ;-)
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:51:17+0000
although Dan's an example of a journalist gone pretty geeky
Andriak 2010-06-14T00:51:20+0000
Then again, some say programmers can't talk to people. Journos can (theoretically).
Laurian 2010-06-14T00:51:40+0000
but the can write
Laurian 2010-06-14T00:51:42+0000
they
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:51:42+0000
he sounds like a dude on Gizmodo right now
Andriak 2010-06-14T00:52:18+0000
Yes, some, Laurian. And I have known at least three who made the journo to programmer leap successfully.
Andriak 2010-06-14T00:52:37+0000
Wait. four.
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:52:50+0000
I think teams that include design + journalist + programer are probably the best
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:53:10+0000
I think presenting data and information is really important and something we need to improve in many cases
gueorgui 2010-06-14T00:54:17+0000
instapaper'd, thanks.
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:54:19+0000
Dan, question: Is professional journalism going to continue at its current level and if not, who will protect amateur journalists from legal and physical harm for investigative journalists in the way the big news agencies currently do.
Laurian 2010-06-14T00:54:30+0000
programmer/engineer ... reminds me of this comment http://bit.ly/d7ueKU
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:55:31+0000
yeah, newspapers are GROWING in the Middle East, which is pretty weird
Andriak 2010-06-14T00:55:47+0000
Awesome, Laurian.
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:56:59+0000
BTW, Dan called the subprime mortgage issue publicly before any other journalist I know
janak 2010-06-14T00:57:27+0000
to the participants in the physical/actual/real/tangible class at KMD. Please do not turn on Ustream. Bandwith seems flaky
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:57:57+0000
new laws?
Andriak 2010-06-14T00:58:17+0000
Yeah, on Dan being "lefty." His stance on gov't support of journalism (don't) veers to "rightie," or at least libertarian.
JoiIto 2010-06-14T00:59:02+0000
yeah, he's lefty just in the good ways. ;-P
JoiIto 2010-06-14T01:00:21+0000
Happy to have other people ask questions too, but I have another question about transparency and data - Lessig argues that too much belief in transparency without context can cause misunderstandings and false positives
gueorgui 2010-06-14T01:00:26+0000
Sorry if it's an obvious question, but my background isn't in journalism. How do you balance fairness and bias, and how to keep this balance when you're covering a story into which you're personally involved (for example see Jake Adelstein's book Tokyo Vice, interview with him here: http://www.ft.com/cms/s/2/741f4db0-7365-11df-ae73-00144feabdc0.html)
Andriak 2010-06-14T01:01:31+0000
About protecting journalists: Very dangerous in Mexico and further south, like Honduras, now. I watched Twitter explode with "golpe" in Honduras. Amazing. You can't stifle voices. Unlesss gov't kills them.
JoiIto 2010-06-14T01:05:19+0000
Timothy Leary: "question authority and think for yourself"
JoiIto 2010-06-14T01:05:27+0000

lisa_ 2010-06-14T01:06:32+0000
in Jake's case, I think he was fully transparent about his biases and connections; he never claimed to be unbiased... and that makes it fair, imo.
Laurian 2010-06-14T01:06:34+0000
hmmm, what about Wikileaks journalism approach?
Catharina 2010-06-14T01:07:01+0000
@ Joi re transparency - I think in many countries we are still so far behind and it is too early to push for "careful" transparency ...
JoiIto 2010-06-14T01:07:01+0000
Laurian - this is connected to the transparency vs context issue as well
JoiIto 2010-06-14T01:07:15+0000
Catharina - that's fair
JoiIto 2010-06-14T01:08:03+0000
I think that the way you visualize or present the data can have biases though in both interesting and sometimes misleading ways
JoiIto 2010-06-14T01:08:16+0000
Lisa, can you get Jake to come speak to the class?
Catharina 2010-06-14T01:08:29+0000
yes, I agree and I also think context is important :-)
gueorgui 2010-06-14T01:08:49+0000
Thank you, Dan

Andriak 2010-06-14T01:17:43+0000
@Dan. So what about the "If news is important, it will find me," idea, especially in an age when 20somethings and more are getting fed up with Facebook?
JoiIto 2010-06-14T01:20:06+0000

13th June IRC Log
hi all
hey there
Lets give them a few min. students seem to be trickling in
raining in Tokyo apparently....
time
http://www.ustream.tv/channel/kmd-p2pu-digital-journalism
audio is working nicely for me
i can hear you guys loud and clear
dan are you listening on ustream
trying now
it's choppy but i see and hear you
this is the link: http://p2pu.org/node/3838/forums/4123
good morning from Keio
If I get a chance to discuss my project, my skype ID is AlanCWebb
hey janak: good morning.
good very early morning :)
(2am in berlin woo)
irc experts: what's the command to change your nick again?
/nick
JoiIto: in kana it'd be ge o ru gi
yup :)
no, in Berlin
he is in berlin
how does joiito present on skype video and reply to questions in IRC at the same time is that really joi on the video?
joi is a robot
philippSA: I preferred oneLtwoP
laurian: yes, but you are a geek. maybe i'll change it back later.
haha.
I think my project is likely single, although if someone wanted to do a parallel project about tuition increase in a different country it might be really neat.
hi
Mine definitely would be better with an international team.
sure, that's fine
sorry i had some trouble with my internet connection
btw, yushi, you're recording ustream right?
yes
ok cool
hey alan
alan is on
hey Catharina
Hi Joi! hi everyone
alan: kill the sound on your ustream
our close the ustream window while speaking on skype
janak, make sure you ask dan to do this when you connect with him
i will
what is the output?
blog?
Alan I like the idea a lot. Policy geeks unite!
dedicated blog or on your blog?
part of the class will be about interacting with your audience and promoting your content
I love the idea as well.
so think a bit about where you want to post it
but it's a good idea
if you want to set up a dedicated blog with us, let me know
anyway, thanks
dan, go for 30 min or more if you like
i'll keep it somewhat shorter
and make it as interactive or not - whatever you like
ok
i'm off ustream now; waiting for skype call
Thanks Mike, looking forward to discussing!
Also Gueorgui, let's discuss :)
it would be funny if the author of "We The Media" didn't interact and only lectured I guess ;-)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dan_Gillmor
AlanCWebb: Allright, let's email after the session's over: gueorgui@gmail.com
Yushi can you type "Streaming second seminar from Keio" in the "update" box of UStream broadcaster and hit the "update" button?
done! did it show up?
yup. thanks!
also, it sounds like you've got the microphone on the laptop selected
from the keyboard sound
yushi: careful, your audio is very loud - don't say anything you don't want us to hear ;-)
can you see if you can set the audio to the mic on the video camera?
ok ill watch out
we just heard your stuffy nose
ill check the mic too
the audio should be a pulldown menu
ooops rainy and cold today in tokyo
on the broadcast window
is that better?
this is one point where Dan and I sometimes disagree
much better!
oh wow that's so much better
that's great
ok great
and FWIW Dan = slightly lefty, ernest and "people loving" journo
his bias
dan dropped from IRC too hmm
I wonder if it was something I said
probably the lefty comment :)
after bias
es
principles!
lack of biases
btw, yushi, remember the audio setting on the mic and on the computer for this. It's working very well.
ok
janak, when you have the mic again, tell dan to get back onto IRC
we should take questions here after he's done
<JoiIto> janak, when you have the mic again, tell dan to get back onto IRC <--- Ok. Will do
thanks
I'll wait til he finishes
he is on a roll
yup, let him finish
I've got one question when he's done : Is professional journalism going to continue at its current level and if not, who will protect amateur journalists from legal and physical harm for investigative journalists in the way the big news agencies currently do. (I can paste this again when he's on IRC)
(unless they're wrong)
heh
hey dan
I think the intent is also really important
because you can be thorough without being clear
a "cover-your-ass" kind of thoroughness that people do in their tax returns
IRC n00b testing. Ignore.
Being Clay Shirky: http://www.flickr.com/photos/joi/1405760562/
Ignored :)
mmm, noctilux.
yes, freedom to fail = cost of failure = low = innovation = high
Thanks, Will. :)
good thing to hear my home country's doing cool with API and jounralism, but i cant imagine my father (or people that age) using it :(
Programmer here!
and we need to keep an eye on "database rights" - some countries have that in addition to copyright. Be careful about projects that collect free content and then exert "database rights" to lock them up. Often screws up attempts to open API later.
another programmer here ;)
in this weeks readings there is a line that says that it's easier to teach programmers to become journalists than to teach journalists how to program ;-)
made me smile
hmmm :)
that's actually a huge relief for me, heh.
Yeah, the programmer/journo line makes me grimace. :)
gueorgui: :)
thats saying journalsm is easier than programming
yes, it is like saying that ;-)
although Dan's an example of a journalist gone pretty geeky
Then again, some say programmers can't talk to people. Journos can (theoretically).
but the can write
they
he sounds like a dude on Gizmodo right now
Yes, some, Laurian. And I have known at least three who made the journo to programmer leap successfully.
Wait. four.
I think teams that include design + journalist + programer are probably the best
I think presenting data and information is really important and something we need to improve in many cases
Y'all should check out http://help.hackshackers.org Bringing journos and programmers together.
instapaper'd, thanks.
Dan, question: Is professional journalism going to continue at its current level and if not, who will protect amateur journalists from legal and physical harm for investigative journalists in the way the big news agencies currently do.
programmer/engineer ... reminds me of this comment http://bit.ly/d7ueKU
yeah, newspapers are GROWING in the Middle East, which is pretty weird
Awesome, Laurian.
BTW, Dan called the subprime mortgage issue publicly before any other journalist I know
to the participants in the physical/actual/real/tangible class at KMD. Please do not turn on Ustream. Bandwith seems flaky
new laws?
Yeah, on Dan being "lefty." His stance on gov't support of journalism (don't) veers to "rightie," or at least libertarian.
yeah, he's lefty just in the good ways. ;-P
Happy to have other people ask questions too, but I have another question about transparency and data - Lessig argues that too much belief in transparency without context can cause misunderstandings and false positives
Lessig's article in The New Republic: http://www.tnr.com/article/books-and-arts/against-transparency?page=0,0
About protecting journalists: Very dangerous in Mexico and further south, like Honduras, now. I watched Twitter explode with "golpe" in Honduras. Amazing. You can't stifle voices. Unlesss gov't kills them.
Timothy Leary: "question authority and think for yourself"
is appropriate for innovators today
in Jake's case, I think he was fully transparent about his biases and connections; he never claimed to be unbiased... and that makes it fair, imo.
hmmm, what about Wikileaks journalism approach?
@ Joi re transparency - I think in many countries we are still so far behind and it is too early to push for "careful" transparency ...
Laurian - this is connected to the transparency vs context issue as well
Catharina - that's fair
"Rules for Radicals" also seeing resurgence now, on left and right: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rules_for_Radicals
I think that the way you visualize or present the data can have biases though in both interesting and sometimes misleading ways
Lisa, can you get Jake to come speak to the class?
yes, I agree and I also think context is important :-)
Thank you, Dan

@dangillmor thanks for your time and answering the questions
and last week's great discussion is here: http://p2pu.org/node/3838/forums/4048
was fun
Thanks Dan for the talk :)
Thank you.
Thanks
thank you, Dan
Also Gueorgui, let's discuss :)
Let's!
Got my email addres?
sorry about that... appreciated it, Dan was what I was trying to say :)
+s
and yes, have your email I think, thanks!

attracting users is the new distribution; but they're coming to get it, you're not distributing it in any traditional away
@Dan. So what about the "If news is important, it will find me," idea, especially in an age when 20somethings and more are getting fed up with Facebook?
audio isn't coming thru to me
I can hear now
still here
recent podcast from the Economist about state of newspaper industry and money/journalism http://bit.ly/dwdJKu
Thanks!
no business model... but hoping for many models...
I like it! We have to try all kinds of things.
yeah, I agree abut the "getting together" approach
opportunities to fail w/o costs
Thanks Joi
does this class have a Twitter hashtag?
i'll send along some links
Twitter hashtag: #p2pukmdDJ
ok, thanks!
#kmdp2puDJ
Thanks Dan, it was great "meeting" you online
yes, for me as well
was a nice class :)
Thanks Joi. Was a very nice class, yes.
Thanks all.
