I meant I feel like I know you

tell me about it.... I am left sometimes scratching my head
have you decided about your project already?
well, hopefully, after this course is done, the quality of my insight will be a little closer to these guys'
yeah, i'm going with Alan Webb's project
how about you?
still wondering....
what are your options?
either join some of the projects ( Alan Webb's or Nadir's)
or simply go for mine which is not very original I am afraid
that is help a senegalese group of programmers that are educating african youth to use open source software
like gimp, python tec
etc
hmm, as a developer myself i wonder if developers would be any good as educators :)
lol
but that's a good project idea.
i'm pretty sure alan's project is going to be very difficult for me since i have zero formal journalism background, but it's pretty ambitions, a lot to learn i think
well at least you are a programmer.... I would like to go in the past to learn programming
not economics
grass is always greener on the other side
absolutely
woops, joi's speaking on ustream already
hi Alan!

Hi janak I couldn't make to the class but I am watching at Ustream.
@Gustavo ok...but it goes in one ear and out the other. still not technically awake yet
that's what i did last week but it was not so clear
@seokjoo_han don't encourage truancy and tardiness!

JoiIto: Well, it helps to have a few thousands followers for that (re: Twitter)
*Sneaks in late after tying up tomato plants.* Hi!
I'll post the log of this irc chat later tomorrow, i have issues with my Mac, now I'm here from my iPad
Her twitter is awesome
@gustavo my twitter name is jbjbanjb
pretty awesome if u ask me
couldn't find your twitter janak!
Somebody should create a Twitter list with all the participants in this course
Hmmm, we should have such lists under @p2pu for all courses
I do follow some politicians on Twitter and FB, I wonder though how many of them really Tweet personally...
sorry Gustavo, it's actually jbjbandjb
very complex issue in japan, janak... not even the tv has a free voice here... getting better in recent years though...
@marcos is it more freedom or ways to distract us from seeking the truth through drole contents
@marcos at least the world cup doesn't lie
hahahah... but referees make mistakes....
following you there now, "george clooney"
Here's a Twitter list made by @1rick: http://twitter.com/1rick/p2pu
doesn't twitter make journalism old really fast?
not journalism, but the news itself
Yep. I'd say avoid tweeting "Breaking News! xxx" when you personally hear about something. If it's an hour old, you look slow.
any questions for Hiroko?
For Hiroko: how the newspaper deal with the tweeter competition to be the fastest or the first one to tell a story?
Yup, great book.
For Hiroko (or others): any tips one how to use twitter to find new sources outside of your network, particularly if you don't have a large network of followers personally?
good question @AlanCWebb
Yeah, good question.
i'll try to get Joi's attention
thanks for the questions
no problem, thanks!
seems like he is not looking my way on purpose...neglect: staple of my childhood
thanks janak!!!
@gustavo wurd! just retweet me always
thanks!
@alancwebb u got it boss. good question. you to dore.
@janak, back at ya, and glad to help you confront repressed childhood memories
re objective coverage: Is the mainstream media in Japan in any way dependent on government money?
... or does the pressure come from other mechanisms?
(job security, social pressure...?)
no class after janak
use the room freely
I think it's job security, the old way is that if you (the journalist) isn't part of an official "press club", you don't get access. And to be a member of those "press clubs", you have to be careful with what you write.
@gueorgui Sounds a bit like criticism of the U.S. media in Washington, D.C. and sometimes New York. Jay Rosen calls them the "church of the savvy."
But there must be some kind of underlying consensus, that this is actually good for ... society? Public moral? Something?
thanks dore. can you also check if i have a golf lesson today?
Something like that, I suppose. Maybe a good question for Hiroko-san.
@janak just checked. today is your yoga lesson.
thanks dore, what the hell am i gonna do w/my golf ****s?
clubs
hahahaha thanks for the support in the class janak
@gueorguie,
The journofortechies thing has gotten some buzz at Nieman Lab as well.
http://www.niemanlab.org/2010/06/hackshackers-mozilla-team-up-for-peer-t...
I'm hoping to put up a post about the effort this weekend at my personal site, and might cross post at MediaShift if they're interested.
A key question I haven't dug into: There was some funding done as part of the collaboration. I believe the amount might have been announced during the live video stream, but I haven't had time to check the archives. If anyone knows or has time to dig, it would be interesting to know how much funding was provided.
