World Cup Assignment

I couldn't find the original assignment posting, but thought I would post a short blog entry that I wrote here, http://www.josephthibault.com/2010/technology-the-us-and-soccer-kmdp2pudj/
I'm interested to see how other people interpreted the assignment. I would say that my piece is more op-ed than journalism, but it was interesting to think about regardless.
I'd actually like an extension on the assignment as I only saw it existed today (my bad).
Is it OK to get it in by the end of the week?
Joey (Joseph?), I agree with what you wrote about the WC. I seems that tech has left us questioning human error. And I am not sure that any sport is going down the right path when stats, graphics and computer simulation start to play a bigger role.
On the other hand though, as an England fan I was in the pub sulking after the game and would like to see some degree of tech used. A simple light bulb that flashes if the ball goes over the line fully would be enough. It puzzles me why FIFA is reluctant to even go low-tech by today's standards.
I've finally finished my piece for this assignment, it's about the North Korean team in this world cup. That's the first time I've written anything so long in a while, it was a fun exercise. Please feel free to point out mistakes, redundancies or faux-pas!

hi Gueorgui, I read your blog post and I find it very enlightening and amusing. Not sure what the assignment was though, I didn't find the actual instructions. I like the fact that you included a lot about North Korea's political position and organization when portraying the team players and their spirit. This was the most interesting part for me and you could probably extend that (the cultural background) to some level. I believe this was the innovative part in your reporting and wish I could hear more of that from other football journalists as well. Nice job anyway:)
I loved the piece. I was actually in the stadium for North Korea's loss to Portugal and it was demoralizing. The team's spirit was so clearly broken after the 3rd or 4th goal that visitors started speculating about their fate - half joking about the trouble they will get into when they return home. So, I was glad to read that apparently the players will be fine. After they played so well against Brazil (including a spectacular goal) I think it must have been especially hard to loose like this against Portugal. Anyway, your article reminded me of my own thoughts during the match - thank you!

Lena, you're right, North Korea's political and social structure is a very fascinating subject, and I should have worked some more information on that into the post. Maybe a good subject for the next one?
Philipp, wow, lucky you to have been there. The broken spirit was pretty obvious on TV also, it was a little painful to watch. Well, not for the Portuguese, I suppose :)
Gueorgui, this was a great piece. It was genuinely interesting and insightful. Not only have you completely the task set out in the assignment, but have done so with flair.

World Cup Fever
This week we'll be using the tools available to us online to both gather information and the present it.
You are required to report on a World Cup match of your choice. We're not looking for a straight forward match report - rather something with some colour. Please do not use wire agencies or other news outlets as your sources. Instead find people on the ground using social networking and media sharing communities to find media and commentary.
Then use freely available tools to present your story.
Actually, I find the assignment system a little confusing. This world cup assignment completely went past me. I only inferred from Joseph's initial post in this topic that there might be one.
The section "Assignments" on "Course Home" constantly says "No assignments yet".

Joseph : One of the things that we wanted to get out of this assignment was sourcing information online - perhaps from folks in South Africa or those watching back home. Andria's like to Global Vue is useful for this.
Mohamed, I totally understand. Without the instructions I went from memory and only got the assignment partially right (at least it was World Cup focused!).
