At yesterdays phone call we talked about the accessibility policies in Europe, considering Alfonso's and Karen's homework. Another good starting point is W3C's list of policies, but I also compared the main approaches back in 2007, and we had two panels at the European Accessibility Forum Frankfurt last year comparing Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, the UK and what needs to be done for harmonizing the laws.
After that we began to address the top ten barriers of the web, starting with the @alt attribute of the img tag. A good starting point to fully understand when to use the right alternative text is Steve Faulkner's proposal for HTML5. We'll get more into ARIA later with screenreader experiments.
There's no homework for next week, though I encourage you to download the free, open source NVDA screenreader to play with. The next telephone conference will be same time next week, i.e. 5:00 PM UTC on 20 October.
Thanks for the update. I cannot use NVDA despite hearing it highly praised. I have a Mac. That means I have VoiceOver and I have long wanted to try it out. I've fumbled with the Voice in the Opera browser, but now I have an excuse to do it properly.
@Karen, no problem, we won't dive into screenreaders yet, but we will do so later. I can't help you with VoiceOver, but WebAIM has a good tutorial to get started.
For NVDA I can recommend Marco Zehe's tutorial. He's a blind developer working for Mozilla.
