Today is Wednesday, but there won't be a telephone conference call today. Let's start next week, 29 September 2010 at 5:00 PM UTC/GMT.
The reason is I'm still struggling to find a free, accessible, browser-based tool for one-to-many sharing of my screen for an initial presentation. Skype allows only 1:1 screen-sharing, and Tokbox, a tool that has been recommended by P2PU, isn't free anymore for scheduled meetings. Also Tokbox is based on Flash and I doubt it's keyboard accessible.
An easy alternative would be using Skype for audio and as a chat backchannel, while previously uploading presentations to Slideshare. That means you'd have to click manually through a couple of slides while I give an initial short talk setting-up the topic. After that we enter discussion and address your feedback from your weekly homework assignment. On the other hand keeping slides on slideshare is more convenient if you miss a telcon.
What do you think? Tokbox or Skype/Slideshare? Do you have recommendations for screen-sharing tools? How do the other courses address that issue? If you have a disability, would any of those solutions work for you?
Cheers,
Martin
The presentation on Google Docs?
First you have to give us permission to see it. After, share the presentation link with the file open at Google Docs to us, and then it will let you control the slides we see on real time. The only problem is the need of having all a Google account.
If you mark the Google Doc as "Public and on the web then anyone can view it via the URL, even without a Google account.
Did we decide on which format to use for the call? I think Skype/Slideshare would be easiest and least likely to have problems, but http://dimdim.com is also an option if we need the ability to share screens. I know it works well in Firefox, but I have had mixed results using it with other browsers. It is free for up to a certain number of participants -- not sure the exact number. For now here is my skype info Martin: caswell[dot]tom. Looking forward to chatting tomorrow!
Cheers,
Tom Caswell
I assume we have a problem to get started. The course is supposed to start now, and I'm alone on Skype. Yes, I'd like to try Google docs.
Are you still interested? After all only 4 course members have uploaded a photo, if that's an indicator of the general level of interest that would be disappointing.
Please give feedback whether you're still interested and if the time slot Wednesdays at 5:00 PM UTC works for you. Also please add me as a contact on skype:martin.kliehm
Cheers,
Martin
Hi Martin,
I can only speak for myself, but I am still very interested. I have added you on skype now. Wednesdays at 5:00pm GMT/UTC works fine for me. Sorry I missed it today, but I didn't have your skype info. Looking forward to next week. Also, where should I post the link to my blog post when it is finished?
Cheers,
Tom
Sorry to miss today's call. I had a meeting in town. I am definitely interested. I cannot connect to you on Skype though.
1. Yes, I am very interested in this course.
2. I haven't uploaded a picture because the minimum requirements are higher than on any other website and I don't have one handy right now. The downside of being behind the camera most of the time ;-)
3. As for the timing, I'm not quite sure but did the Doodle poll's range (at least for me) ended at 4 p.m.
4. Yesteday just didn't work out for me. Will there be recordings of the conference calls once we got started?
Hi Martin,
I'm also still definitely interested. I was out sick yesterday afternoon (the time of the call for me) and I didn't think that the details of the meeting had been finalized.
The call time works well for me, and I'll add you as a skype contact.
Hi Martin,
I'm interested in the accessibility course. I didn`t have Skipe until now. Sorry for the delay.
See you
OK, fine, that sort of reliefs me. So please join Skype on Wednesday at 5:00PM UTC.
Looking forward to today's call at 5.00PM UTC time! (That's 2 hours from now according to timeanddate.com, if I am not mistaken.)
Correct, course begins in 90 minutes from now. Google Docs wouldn't let me import images. So I uploaded the slides for today in the "course material" section and also on Slideshare: http://goo.gl/dH6s
Don't forget to add me (martin.kliehm) as a Skype contact so that I can invite you to the telephone conference.
Thanks for today's call. It was good to "meet" Logan, Alfonso, and Martin. Catch you next week!
Just a reminder, the next telephone conference is Wednesday, 13 October, at 5:00 PM UTC (1:00 PM Boston, 6:00 PM London, 7:00 PM Berlin, 10:30 PM Mumbai, see http://goo.gl/bt3y for other times). The telcon will be held on Skype where you find me as martin.kliehm - befriend me and I'll initiate the conference call.
On this week's agenda: your assignment to write a blog article about accessibility legislation in your country; we'll begin to examine the first couple of the ten largest barriers and how to avoid them.
Looking forward to the discussion. In case you cannot attend please leave a message in the forum.
If you are interested in different approaches of accessibility legislation, I compared two models in a blog post back in 2007 (before WCAG 2): http://learningtheworld.eu/2007/accessibility-europe/
I'm sorry, but something has come up at work and I do not think I will be able to attend today's call. I do have Skype on my phone, and I'll try to attend. If you don't see me as logged on, then know I was stuck. :(
And I was looking forward to today's topic.
I won't be able to attend today's telco. Sorry.
