Odd Theme Issue - Need Help

Go back to: General discussion

OK, I'm having a weird issue with WordPress.  This is a fresh installation of 3.0.4.  What is happening is I loaded a theme from www.elegantthemes.com, added a few plugins, had the site looking like I wanted and then when I came back to it later I got a blank white screen.  I can get to the admin panel by going to the url, so I did this and I get the message in the theme area "The active theme is broken. Reverting to the default theme."  So it looks like WordPress has determined at some point in time after I last looked at it that my theme is broken and has tried to revert to the standard twentyten theme, but it is not working either.   At this point I can reactivate my old theme and it comes back for a while.  I can also reactiviate the default theme twentyten, after selecting some other theme, and it works OK.

For troubleshooting purposes I have currently disabled ALL plugins and I have no widgets running.  I've also reuploaded all the files for the theme that it says is breaking and ALL The core WordPress files.  At this point I'm going to leave the default twentyten theme on for a bit and see if it breaks with that theme as well. I think it might have yesterday before I even started adding the new theme.  Site is:

www.ronallison.com

Any ideas on what this could be?  I've got several WordPress sites and have never had an issue like this.  I do see that it happens because there are lots of posts about it in the WordPress help forums.  Normally though the issue is a plugin or widget misbehaving, but I have all those turned off.

Thanks for the help.

Ron, wicht elegantthemes is that get problems to you? Maybe in the eleganthemes forums, someone have had same issue and there is a solution. Anyway, i would try to download the theme and to upload to your server, perhaps a file is lost in the ftp transactions.
I usually use elegantthemes and have ever had any problems.

Snap! I've been blogging my progress too :-)

I've seen a couple of Elegant Themes in action and they appear to be very heavily branded and I don't know that we're best placed to help with this - I wonder if it would be a good idea to ask on the support forums there?

Otherwise I'd say that a broken theme has for me in the past been something I've gotten wrong in the css theme information, for example:

/*
Theme Name: Blah
Theme URI: http://blahblah.com
Description: Week One of P2PU WordPress Development
Author: Your name
Author URI: Your url
Version: 1.x
*/

Have you checked there?

I would agree Nuria, I've used them before and not had any issues. The theme I was using was simplepress. I did check the forums and did not find this issue, but I will post over there as well. Actually, I'll try downloading again and uploading to my site first. I think I tried that last night but it can't hurt to do again.

OK, It happened again with just the twentyten theme. I had the default theme on and at some point WordPress decided to revert to the default theme(which it was already on) and I got the White Screen of Death. Same error message as before.

I'm thinking I might just start over on the site at this point. I'm not getting any error messages in my log files so I'm sort of stumped.

You know, this is the one big failing with any CMS, getting help from other people. If it were straight html and css we could view source and offer suggestions but everything's hidden in the back end so we have to guess at solutions based on experience, not physical data.

Does that make sense? I'm not missing something here am I?

Ron, would it help to install this Theme Test Drive plugin:

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/theme-test-drive/

You can work on the new theme while the twenty-ten theme is active?

i had a similar problem, i couldn't transfer all files to my server via ftp client, had to upload a zip archive through the cpanel and unzip it manually and now everything works. Ron don't you use a wireless connection btw?

OK, looks like I got it figured out. Well, I got it fixed. It must have been some corruption in the database.

I exported the data out of my database, deleted all the tables, ran the quick install again, then reimported my data and all appears to be fixed. I'm stable running with the theme I wanted and the plugins I desired.

Thanks for helping.
