Hi all, alhtough we will be using the community server at http://owf1.virtualnorthstar.org:8080/wonderland-web-front/
for our weekly meetings, what other communication channels will you guys be happy to use?
We are obviously also using the forums at P2PU, and there is also a chat channel for us to use. I also hope you have all subscribed to the main wonderland groups, as there is a lot of good info in there.
Would you guys be happy to use gmail chat, skype, etc? Please let me know!
cheers,
José
Hi jose,
It would be good if we could use gmail chat or skype along with the forums and community.
There's a bunch of Web 2.0 technologies we can leverage all around for online collaboration. We can pick what we need from:
(1) gmail chat/skype - voice communication/desktop sharing
(2) Teamviewer - presentations/desktop sharing
(3) Google sites - project template - setting up individual projects, wiki, sharing working docs (temporary)
(4) Youtube - setting up and sharing playlists of interest, creating short instructional videos on basic and advanced concepts. See .. commoncraft.com for some low tech videos on web 2.0 technologies. http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=in+plain+english&aq=f
(5) Social bookmarking using either
...(a) Google notebook http://www.google.com/googlenotebook/tour1.html
...(b) Delicious
...(c) Memonic
(6) Blogs
(7) Twitter for more intermittent communication about how the team members are doing with projects, learning experience etc.
(8) Google Reader for setting up feeds from various websites of interest
(9) Social networking - Facebook - getting feeds from Wonderland, etc.
Of course the forum, OWL groups would be the main channels for P2PU course and OWL related communication.
I like all of that, really:
1. you all have my gmail account so feel free to ping me there (mail or chat).
2. I hadn't heard of it before: http://www.teamviewer.com/
3. I was thinking of using github for this. We are using it for development meetings outside the main svn repo. Here's the subsnapshots project we are working on right now:
https://github.com/jonathankap/openwonderland-subsnapshot
4 and 5. sounds really good! Love the idea of short instructional videos. There are some OWL ones listed in here:
http://faithhold.dyndns.org:8080/JSPWiki/Wiki.jsp?page=Wonderland%20Videos
6. we will be using our personal blogs, but finding other resources out there could be worth the trouble.
7. 'josmasflores' on tweeter
8 and 9 and the 'official' OWL channels also sound great! I guess we are all members already (or we should!)
For a look on how we are using github for the subsnapshots project, there is a write up in the community wiki:
http://faithhold.dyndns.org:8080/JSPWiki/Wiki.jsp?page=Using%20Git%20and...
As usual, it is a work in progress!!! :D
José
I have both gmail and Skype accounts. I am aslo open to other chat tools if you guys prefer
Hi Jose
could you please tell me how to subscribe to the main wonderland groups? thanks a lot.
Hi Xiaolin, you can subscribe to the wonderland forums here: http://groups.google.com/group/openwonderland?pli=1
There is also a scripting group: http://groups.google.com/group/open-wonderland-scripting
cheers,
José
Thanks Jose.
In terms of communications channels, I would prefer to have one channel to keep track of and have that one notify me of any other notifications. I don't like to have to keep watching a bunch of chat programs.
Morris
I agree with that Morris. But in the case of communications one to one (or small groups), I don't mind if people ping me on mail, chat, etc. Group meetings will be by just the one channel, the community server. Other than that, just asynchronous tools such as the forums, and the usual suspects.
José
Hi all.
are we going to meet today at 1:00 pm (GMT -6:00) at http://owf1.virtualnorthstar.org:8080/wonderland-web-front/? thanks a lot.
Xiaolin.
Hey Xiaolin, sorry I missed this message! There was a meeting today at that time for the development of the subnapshots project. Nothing to do with the course but you were all welcome. In fact you are always welcome to development meetings, which are weekly and at 1pm EST (6pm GMT) every Wednesday.
cheers,
José
Hi Jose.
thank you for replying so soon. When and how are we going to meet this week? Have we decided it yet?
Xiaolin.
Heya, first meeting will be next week. I'll send times tonight. We will be discussing all the reading material so you can start reading whenever you want!
Reading material is in the syllabus.
cheers,
José
