Week 2 - Task of the week

Go back to: General discussion

Hello Good People,

We are entering the second week of the course. The plan is to discuss the difference between governance and government.

Why are we talking about open governance and not open goverment?

The task for this week is twofold:

1) Please find 1or 2 readings (depending on your time and length of the articles) and look at definitions of governance and government, how they differ, and some examples of applications.

Question the definitions you encounter by asking: "In which contexts to the terms apply? are they the same or not?", "what is the goal of governance and what is the goal of government?". The questions asked during week 3 of the previously-run P2PU course "Open Governance" also stimulate thoughts and reflections -- http://p2pu.org/general/open-governance

By the end of this week 2, that is, by February 8, write at least one entry in the blog about your reading(s) and make at least one comment on your peers' entries. We can start some process of peer-reviewing, that is, we all get together to read and comment on each other's work.

Feel free to use other formats besides writing. For example, you can draw diagrams, but make sure they are understandable.

2) Generate some questions for our guest Michel Bauwens here http://piratepad.net/opengov-questions.

Our list contains only few recommended readings. Feel free to browse around and find other readings. If you draw from other readings, please summarize briefly the content in the blog so that the rest of us can have a better idea of the content of your readings.

working on a "relatively" simple task like this can help develop several skills and achieve important learning objectives, such as those

  • Express clear, coherent thoughts through writing
  • Analyze or critique existing work
  • Connect course topics with current events or personal experience
  • Debate and discuss issues in the field topic
  • Conduct research, contribute to course content repository
  • Reflect on learning, metacognition
  • Review the work of classmates

So, take this learning opportunity. Choose a couple of articles and post some thoughtful entries.

Hello all,

Sorry I've been absentee for the first week and two meetings. Quick intro: worked in education formally for a couple years where I developed an interest in Open Educational Resources, leading to my efforts in Collaborative Lesson Planning where teachers plan lessons together. Interested in how open governance can further that along. For more about me, please see my homepage http://danoff.org

Not quite ready to do my formal post yet, but I did read Dan Bevarly's "The difference between Open Government and Open Governance" and enjoyed reading as an introductory piece. His definition of the diff btw Government/Governance is:

In other words, open government is opening your home to the general public. Open governance allows them to rearrange the furniture as they see fit.

Looking forward to our collective adventure.
